MATCHDAY 23: FEW GOALS AND NEW LEADER

29 Jan 2014
For the second straight matchday there were only a few goals at Segunda División and again there was a change at the leadership. Only Depor and Real Zaragoza won among the first eight places, while the bottom clubs clinched good results.

Only 20 goals were scored in matchday 23, which is the lowest number on this season. Nine of the Segunda clubs ended scoreless and only six were able to net two or more goals. Once again the leaders faced problems as only two of the first eight places won their games. One of them was Deportivo. The Galicians won in their visit to Córdoba CF (0-1) and regained their place at the top of the standings.

This after Sporting Gijón could only obtain a goalless draw hosting Recreativo de Huelva. The other big winner of the weekend was Real Zaragoza, side that got a suffered 0-1 win visiting CD Mirandés. The Aragonians have won three of their last four games and are now fourth, three points behind Depor.

Surprising SD Eibar remain third after a 1-1 draw visiting relegation-troubled Girona FC. The big surprise was the defeat of UD Las Palmas hosting another team at the bottom, Deportivo Alavés (0-2). Neither RCD Mallorca had a good weekend as they could get a 2-2 draw visiting Real Murcia. CD Lugo clinched a second straight win, again thanks to Renella and a narrow 1-0 win.

And the matchday was really good for the clubs in relegation; three of them won while the other one, Girona FC, got a meritorious draw facing SD Eibar. Deportivo Alavés surprised UD Las Palmas, and Real Madrid Castilla did the same during their visit to AD Alcorcón (0-2). The B team of Real Madrid cut a streak of three defeats in a row.

CD Tenerife also got a valuable victory as they defeated Hércules CF (2-3). The Canarians were winning 0-2 by minute 6, but the Valencians equalized at the first minute of the second part and only a late goal from Ayoze secure the victory. These positive results for the bottom teams pulled CD Mirandés into the pit for the second time on the season. The matchday was completed with the draws between CE Sabadell CF and SD Ponferradina (1-1), plus Real Jaen and CD Numancia (0-0).

The situation remains tight at the standings, with fifteen points separating the leader from the bottom club. The seventh place is only five points below the leaders, while only six points are separating the 12th spot from the last place.
