MATCHDAY 27: LACKING GOALS

26 Feb 2014
Once again a matchday lacking goals, the worst so far as only 16 goals were netted on the weekend. The leaders clinched positive results in their games and there was a big move at the bottom: the exit of Castilla from the relegation zone.

The last six matchdays at Liga Adelante have been really poor in terms of the number of goals scored, and matchday 27 is breaking the mold. Only sixteen goals were scored during the weekend, which means the lowest mark on this season. The main reason is that there were four goalless draws –the highest number on the liga campaign- besides only one team scored three goals, while 12 of the 22 outfits ended scoreless.

This time the leaders clinched positive results. SD Eibar remain as the leaders after a difficult 0-0 draw visiting Real Murcia. Also suffered was the 1-2 win of Deportivo visiting AD Alcorcón with a new goal scored during the stoppage time. Meanwhile, Recreativo clinched their four straight win after a 0-1 victory at Barcelona B.

Sporting Gijón got a 2-0 win over Deportivo Alavés, which is their first home win in 2014. These four clubs are now the main candidates for the direct promotion spots, because they are just separated by one point. And it’s that the other candidates continue to fail, which has opened a gap of seven points between the 4th and the 5th place.

CD Numancia could only get a 0-0 draw visiting relegation-troubled CE Sabadell CF, Real Zaragoza were surprised by Real Madrid Castilla at La Romareda (0-2). RCD Mallorca got a tasteless goalless draw visiting CD Mirandés, result that cost the job to José Luis Oltra. CD Lugo were defeated at home by CD Tenerife (1-3).  Meanwhile, UD Las Palmas returned to the promotion zone through their first win in five matchdays. It was a suffered 2-1 win over Girona FC with both goals scored within the last fifteen minutes.

At the bottom, the main news is that Real Madrid Castilla are no longer in relegation. The shocking 0-2 win at La Romareda pulled them out of the pit for the first time since matchday 02.  The other three teams in relegation were unable to win their games: Alavés were defeated by Sporting Gijón (0-2), CD Mirandés just got a 0-0 draw hosting RCD Mallorca, while Girona FC were close to defeat UD Las Palmas, but ended losing 1-2.

CE Sabadell CF is the club that returns to relegation after a goalless game hosting CD Numancia, while Hércules CF broke its recent poor form with a 1-0 win over SD Ponferradina. Both clubs remain close to the pit. The matchday was closed with a tasteless 0-0 draw between Córdoba CF and Real Jaén, result that keeps both outfits at mid-table.
