PREVIEW: MIRANDÉS – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

08 Mar 2014
Despite not revealing the plans, Fernando Vázquez is ready to use the system with three centre-backs since the kick-off. The rival is having problems to score the goals and relies in a veteran team led by Pablo Infante.

STATISTICS: THE WORST OFFENSE AT SEGUNDA
Deportivo have been criticized for its poor capacity to create scoring opportunities, but the situation at CD Mirandés is worse as the Basque team represents the worst offense in the league with only 26 goals in favour. Curiously, one season ago, CD Mirandés was also the worst offense at this stage of the competition after only scoring 22 goals in 28 matches, so the problem isn’t new.

This is the main reason why Rojillos are currently the penultimate place at the standings after ending scoreless in eleven opportunities. To have in mind that CD Mirandés have only scored one goal within the last three games; actually thy have only scored six goals in 2014, which is the second lowest mark in the league just above CD Lugo (4).

Meanwhile, Deportivo arrive to the meeting after allowing goals within the last five games, within the period los Blanquiazules leaked six goals to raise the global mark to 22. It doesn’t seem excessive, but the point is that they are no longer the best defense at Segunda as SD Eibar have only allowed 21. At least Depor remain as the best visiting team in the league after adding 25 points in 13 visits.

This is the second time in which Depor visit Miranda de Ebro (Burgos) in order to play a liga match. The previous opportunity was during the campaign 1980/81, the only season in which Depor played at Segunda B. The Galicians lost that game 2-1 despite the rival ended that game with nine men. The goal was scored by José Manuel Traba.

DEPORTIVO: THE SYSTEM WITH THREE CENTRE-BACKS
Within the last two weeks it was predicted that coach Fernando Vázquez was going to implement the system with five defenders, which means a 5-2-2-1 figure, but the Galician trainer always kept the 4-2-3-1 though later he ended using this resource throughout the matches. Now the circumstances are pushing him to use the draw since the kick-off.

Firstly, the characteristics of both, the game and the rival. CD Mirandés is a similar challenge to AD Alcorcón as they practice a direct game that often ends in long throws and crosses into the area, later Los Rojillos urgently need the points and play at home, so they will try to lock up Depor at the back zone, which opens the opportunity to exploit the counterattack and also the need to have enough man to counteract a possible aerial battle and cover all the gaps at their side of the field.

Secondly, the casualties hitting Vázquez team. Luisinho is suspended and Diogo Salomão will remain at the injury room for the rest of the season, so Depor lost their entire left flank, which means to lose width on the pitch. With the pressure of the rival and the lack of resources in attack, the coach is betting in the defense in order to hold on the clean sheet and then search for a central pass or a counterattack on the right side.  So, it is a 5-2-2-1 draw orientated to the right wing.

German Lux will stay at the goal, “miracle man” Laure will perform at the right side of the defense after surpassing an adductor injury before the expectations. It’s expected that Diego Seoane will play at the left as he has better conditions to join the attacks compared to captain Manuel Pablo. Then the central positions are for Albert Lopo, Pablo Insua and Carlos Marchena, the latter is returning from a suspension.

Midfield is territory for Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños. Then it’s expected that Vázquez will reward the solid game of Juan Carlos with a new presence at the starting formation. The ex-Fabril will perform at the centre and will be supported by Antonio Núñez, who will perform towards the right wing.

Finally, in-form José Verdú Toché is the central attacker. The Murcian man has scored four goals so far, two of them in the recent victory over Hércules CF (3-2), and he represents the player at Segunda with the better ratio of goals per minute (1 goal every 62 minutes).

With the return of Laure and Marchena, there were nineteen men available for the coach, so he had to leave somebody in A Coruña, and for the third straight week the chosen one was striker Luis Fernández.

Before the game, Diego Seoane commented that Depor have enough resources to cover the casualties of Luisinho and Salomão, ”They are pretty good, but we get other reinforcements for the wing that could cover any problem. Some players are leaving, but the ones staying can do the same job. The squad is committed and our work has been solid.”

Meanwhile, German Lux said that he isn’t “too worried” after Depor have allowed goals within the last five matches, ”I’m concern for allowing the last goals, but not too much. Our team is among the ones with the lowest number of goals in this league and defensively we are doing a great job.”

Finally, Manuel Pablo was saying that Deportivo cannot rely in solving the games within the last minutes as it happened within the last three liga meetings, ”We cannot always stand upon  the brick of the abyss. The positive thing is the faith of the team, but we need to improve and be more ambitious.”

List of picked players (18): Lux, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Laure, Manuel Pablo, Seoane, Marchena, Lopo, Insua (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Wilk, Núñez, Juan Carlos, Sissoko, Rabello (midfielders); Arizmendi, Borja Bastón & Toché (attackers).

MIRANDÉS:  A DECEIVING RIVAL
After a promising start, the competition put back CD Mirandés into its reality. The club from Miranda de Ebro is just living its second year at Segunda División and the goal has always been the permanence, but the latest results have pulled los Rojillos into relegation. They have only added six points in the second round, which is the second worst mark in the league, just above CE Sabadell CF (5)

However, the current situation of CD Mirandés is deceiving, because it’s a hard rival despite the current circumstances. This is a team full of veterans (11 of the 24 players at the first team are above the 30’s) and is difficult to score goals against them. They have suffered twelve defeats, but the major part of those matches were narrow losses. Their only two big defeats were the 0-3 Vs. Recreativo de Huelva (matchday 05) and 0-3 at CD Tenerife (matchday 24).

Perhaps the biggest sin of the team is its lack of accuracy up front. It’s considered to be an offensive team despite practicing a more direct football, and this fact is demonstrated by a single stat: they have attempted more shots than Deportivo (332 against 305 for the Galicians). The problem is they have scored fewer goals (26 against 32 for Los Blanquiazules).

That’s the main reason why coach Carlos Terrazas, who joined the club back in December, has changed the draw lately. What he did was to relocate veteran and symbol of the club Pablo Infante at the centre, just behind the central attacker, this new 4-1-3-2 figure has added more depth to the team and also brought scoring opportunities in the last game, though it was only good to get a 1-1 draw visiting SD Ponferradina.

The expected starting formation is a veteran team with 7 of the 11 starters already above the 30’s (plus two players that are 29). Chilean Francisco Prieto is the starting keeper (he’s 30), ex-Osasuna veteran Javier Flaño performs at the right side of the defense (29), former Athletic man Koikili Lertxundi covers the left (33), while the centre backs are 35-year-old César Caneda and 30-year-old César Caneda

34-year-old Iván Agustín Suárez is the lonely midfielder, Iriome González attacks from the right wing. He’s one of the four “young” players at this starting formation (26) and already scored twice in liga. 32-year-old Aritz Mújika is the playmaker, while left-back José Antonio Ríos is relocated at the left wing. He’s the youngest player in this lineup (23).

Then captain and top-scorer of the team Pablo Infante (33), is the second striker playing behind ex-Real Sociedad Diaz de Cerio (29). Infante has scored five goals on this Segunda tournament, the interesting fact is that all of those goals were netted late on the games (after minute 67).  Meanwhile, De Cerio has netted three goals. Infante was doubtful until the last second due to a muscle problem that sidelined him for the first trainings of the week, but in the end coach Terrazas confirmed that he’s fit to play.

Defender Iriome González talked before the game; he’s optimistic towards the meeting with Depor, ”Tough games are coming, but we believe in ourselves and are convinced that we can get the three points. Now it’s time to play at home, at our fortress we are better and are getting the points, though we are a facing a very strong rival, a team that’s living a great moment and adding points on the road. No matter what, I believe in this squad. I see that on this week everybody is feeling involved and, with all the respect to the rival, we can beat anyone.”

Midfielder Iván Agustín was also optimistic towards the meeting, ”Deportivo is a team that makes open games, a rival that seizes the sparks of their attackers. I don’t think they will come here to propose too much, but must see it on the pitch. We cannot be pending of the rival, but of what the coach asks from us, and if we take advantage of it, then we can win. Truly they have signed reinforcements and are more solid, but are having problems to carry out with the games, so it demonstrates the equality in the league. I believe we’ll have our options, especially since we play at home, place where we must face every team playing at the same height.”
