REVIEW: FABRIL 2 – PONTEVEDRA 0 (TERCERA)

25 Mar 2014
Prestigious victory for Depor B. The team is out of the race for promotion and knocked down one of the main favorites. Great game of Remeseiro and Adrián, while Lemos was a starter and scored his first goal of the season.

BEFORE THE GAME
New game and new difficult situation for coach José Luis Devesa due to the casualties. Five players were out injured: Tonći Mujan, Toni Insua, Juampa, Uxío and Álex Pérez. Besides, Fornos was concentrated with Spain’s U17 squad, while Róber and Bicho were playing with the Juvenil A squad. At least Dani Iglesias was returning from a muscle problem.

The lineup was a 4-2-3-1 and once again was full of players performing out of their natural positions. Marc Martinez was the starting keeper, Cañi was the improvised right-back, Aarón performed on the left, then Sidibé, a centre midfielder, joined Serbian Stefan Deák at the centre of the defense. Adrián and Queijeiro performed at midfield. Lemos completed his first appearance as a starter playing on the right wing, Portuguese Cardoso was on the left, Romay was the playmaker and Marcos Remeseiro, a playmaker, was the central attacker. Fabril jumped to the grass wearing a shirt with the legend “Animo Álex”, a tribute to Álex Pérez, who recently needed a knee surgery.

The rival was Pontevedra CF, an in-form team that’s currently fighting at the promotion zone and that had only lost one of the previous twelve games. Coach Manu Fernández was missing midfielder Fran Fandiño, but striker Pablo Carnero was available and was a starter in the game. The ex-Celta is the second best scorer in the league (14 goals in favour). Goalkeeper Edu Sousa, plus midfielders David Garcia and Pedro Crespo were starters in the match. The trio played before for Deportivo B.

THE MATCH
Solid game for Fabril. The youngsters were strong in defense and deadly in the counterattack.  Truly the game was marked by the polemic decision that led to the first goal, but the point is that the team did the right things to win the game: it scored the first goal and later waited at the back until defining the game in the counterattack.

Nothing occurred within the first ten minutes; both sides were exchanging the ball possession and there were no scoring opportunities. The first shot in the game came at minute 14, Carnero got the ball after a poor clearance by Marc Martinez, but his shot went over the crossbar. Depor’s youngsters responded with a chance for Lemos after an assist by Romay, but he missed the target.

The game was entertaining despite lacking goal opportunities, mainly because the ball spent more time close to the areas.  Coach Devesa was hoping to bring more depth with Cañi performing as an offensive side defender on the right, but the true is that Aarón Rama was more active on the left. Queijeiro was also having a solid performance at midfield.

The key play in the game came at minute 31. Cardoso released a cross from the left and the ball hit the hands of defender Iago Paz. The referee whistled the penalty, which was very doubtful as the player had his arms attached to the body. Marcos Remeseiro claimed the lead for his team from the spot. It’s his eighth goal of the season.

After the goal, the visiting team claimed the ball possession, but it was unable to create scoring opportunities. Fabril were locked at the back and releasing dangerous counterattacks. The most difficult moment for Depor B in the first part took place during the final five minutes, the visiting team pressed really hard, but the defense was pretty solid and blocked all the attempts.

The second part started with Pontevedra pushing for the equalizer. At minute 47, Crespo missed the target after  collecting a loose ball at the edge of the area. Then Pablo Carnero missed the target  with a long long-range attempt (53’). The first chance for Fabril in this half came at minute 58, it was a fast counterattack in which Lemos faced one-on-one visiting keeper Edu and the latter cleared the danger. Lemos was looking pretty sharp in his first appearance as a starter, in the second part he led six counterattacks, one of them was going to end with the second goal.

The visiting team made two offensive substitutions as Luismi and Kevin Levis entered the pitch, but just a couple of minutes later the locals scored the second in a counterattack. Remeseiro was the assistor and Lemos scored his first goal on the season. The visiting team protested an offside, but the winger came from behind the defense.

And just three minutes later Pontevedra were left with ten men after Pablo Lede was sent off after an aggression over Cañi. So, the game went from a situation in which the locals caressed the draw to a 2-0 scenario in which the losing side was reduced to ten men.

Pontevedra was a disordered team within the final twenty minutes; Depor B should have scored the third goal through their chances in the counterattack, but Edu was there to avoid a bigger punishment. Devesa made the substitutions in this frame of the game as Callón, Dani Iglesias and Ángel entered for Lemos, Cañi and Cardoso.

There was a clear penalty over Remeseiro as he was attempting a shot on target (73’) and Adrián Martinez had two opportunities to score the third goal, but in the first he missed the target (80’) and in the second his attempt was saved by Edu (89’).

AFTER THE GAME
Big win for Deportivo B. The performance in defense was great before a candidate to the promotion playoff. The team seized a controversial penalty and later killed the game in the counterattack.  Remeseiro, Adrián and Lemos were the best players in the match. Depor B are now 10th at the standings, 13 points below the promotion zone with only seven games remaining in the schedule. On next weekend the team visits relegation-troubled SD Negreira.

Comments of Devesa: ”This is the path to follow. Sometimes we do it, sometimes don’t. Well, Fabril are playing good and sometimes we fail as we are allowing goals. We were almost perfect today.  We suffered in the second half after they played with two strikers; we tried to settle and defend their aerial game. Clearly we don’t feel comfortable if we miss the ball. So, it was normal to suffer. The team was fine in a general sense, the centre-backs, side defenders and everybody else. Romay was great and Remeseiro made a solid game. Lemos was pretty active, Miguel was pretty fast, the changes brought things… I don’t have complaints. “
