MATCHDAY 34: THE GOALS RETURNED TO SEGUNDA

It was the Segunda matchday in 2014 with the biggest number of goals. Deportivo was the big winner among the top teams, while SD Ponferradina clinched a huge victory to leave the relegation zone for the first time in a month.

The goals returned to Segunda División through the big door, because the 35 goals netted on the weekend meant the biggest number in 2014 and the second biggest on this season after the 39 goals scored on matchday 14.

Deportivo was the big winner among the leaders; because the 2-0 win over direct rival Recreativo de Huelva allowed them to extend their lead over the second and third place. And it’s that SD Eibar suffered an unexpected second straight defeat, this time at home against another direct rival, CD Tenerife (1-2).

Meanwhile, Sporting Gijón suffered a new defeat, this time a 2-0 loss visiting CE Sabadell CF, it’s the fifth defeat in seven games for the Asturians, who as consequence are out of the promotion zone for the first time since matchday 14.

Only UD Las Palmas were able to follow the steps of Depor after clinching a suffered victory at home, coming from behind before Hércules CF (1-2). Now the Galician outfit has a five-point lead over the second place and a six-point lead over the third spot. For the moment the race for the first two places is between Depor, SD Eibar and UD Las Palmas.

Real Murcia clinched an important 3-1 win over CD Lugo and are now inside the promotion zone as Barcelona B is ineligible; still the Catalan youngsters are living a great moment after trashing Real Jaén on the road (0-3). The race for the playoffs is really open with up to seven clubs searching for the remaining three slots.

The big winner at the bottom of the standings was SD Ponferradina, because their 2-0 win over RCD Mallorca is pulling them out of the pit for the first time in a month. Real Jaén is now on the pit after suffering a fourth loss within the last seven games.

Girona FC clinched their biggest win on the season hosting CD Mirandés (4-0); it was a really weird game as the visiting team suffered the expulsion of two keepers in a matter of six minutes. It’s the first time since 1991 in which this situation happens, and the previous case in which a team suffered the expulsion of two goalkeepers was Lleida visiting Depor (5-0).

Deportivo Alavés remain as the bottom club after a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid Castilla, neither it was enough to see the Madrilenian youngsters leaving the pit. AD Alcorcón is out of relegation despite their 1-3 defeat visiting Córdoba CF, while the matchday was closed with the 2-2 draw between CD Numancia and Real Zaragoza.

MATCHDAY 35: TOUGH CHALLENGE FOR THE LEADER
Deportivo face a complicate visit as they travel to Son Moix in order to face RCD Mallorca, a team that’s desperate after only winning 2 of the last 12 games. Runners-up SD Eibar are visiting relegation-troubled Real Madrid Castilla, while UD Las Palmas are visiting mid-table club CD Mirandés.
