MATCHDAY 40: THE FIRST PROMOTED CLUB

28 May 2014
SD Eibar is the first promoted club to Primera in a new matchday with new failures for the leaders. The fight is really hard in the playoff zone, while Hércules CF have one and a half foot at Segunda División B.

New failures among the leaders at Liga Adelante, but one of them succeeded and it already secured the ticket to Primera División. And it turned to be the club with the smallest budget: SD Eibar. The Basques suffered at home, but clinched a 1-0 win over relegation-troubled Deportivo Alavés and reached again the first place plus the golden ticket to the elite.

Former leaders Deportivo crashed in Soria and fell before a CD Numancia that already secured the permanence (2-1), but the Galicians are closer than ever before to Primera as UD Las Palmas also failed. It was an incredible match in which the Canarian were winning 2-0 by minute 60 before Recreativo de Huelva, but three goals in 22 minutes turned things upside down to give a 2-3 win to the Andalusians, it also meant a spot in the playoff zone. Coach Sergio Lobera was fired one day later.

The two big winners in the playoff zone are Sporting Gijón and Córdoba CF, two clubs that are in promotion after defeating the two B teams in the league; the Asturians got a 1-0 win hosting Barcelona B and still have changes of reaching Depor, while the Andalusians are now sixth after a 2-0 win over Real Madrid Castilla.

Meanwhile, Real Murcia fell from the playoff positions as they could only get a 1-1 draw hosting Real Zaragoza. CE Sabadell is another winner as their 1-0 win over CD Tenerife put them at the edge of the first seven places, while the Canarians suffered a fifth straight defeat with the same score. Just one month ago they were fourth, now they are practically out of the race.

With the direct promotion almost defined, the interesting thing is the war for the playoffs. Currently they are seven teams with big options of fighting for the remaining ticket to Primera, and it’s that the difference between third place UD Las Palmas and ninth place CE Sabadell CF is only of two points, which means that everything can be resolved until the last matchday.

Hércules CF is almost at Segunda B after a dramatic draw at home against CD Lugo (1-1); the Valencians scored first and a last-minute penalty forced them to drop two points, now they are five points below the safety with only two matchdays left.

None of the four teams that were in relegation were able to win their games, actually three of them lost: Hércules CF, Real Madrid Castilla and Deportivo Alavés. The other outfit, Girona FC, couldn’t hold the initial advantage and only got a 1-1 draw before direct rival RCD Mallorca.

Currently there are six teams out of the drop zone that haven’t secured yet the mathematical permanence: Real Zaragoza, CD Lugo, SD Ponferradina, CD Mirandés, Rea Jaén and RCD Mallorca. SD Ponferradina defeated Real Jaén on the road (0-1), while CD Mirandés lost in their visit to AD Alcorcón (2-0). The Madrilenians secured the permanence with this victory.

MATCHDAY 41: MORE DEFINITIONS
Deportivo only need a point hosting Real Jaén, a team that hasn’t secured the permanence yet, to be the second promoted club to Primera División. The Galicians could also secure the ticket if UD Las Palmas miss the victory visiting RCD Mallorca and if Sporting Gijón are unable to defeat Real Zaragoza at La Romareda.

Hércules could also become the first relegated club if they fail to defeat direct rival CD Mirandés. More clubs could end relegated or securing the spot for the playoff, but before they will need a combination of results. The matchday is completed with the games: SD Eibar Vs. CD Lugo; Deportivo Alavés Vs. CD Numancia; SD Ponferradina Vs. Girona FC; Recreativo de Huelva Vs. Córdoba CF; Real Madrid Castilla Vs. CE Sabadell CF; CD Tenerife Vs. Real Murcia and Barcelona B Vs. AD Alcorcón.
