First victory in the pre-season for Depor; poor game with several goal opportunities, but without pace and neither good football. Fariña and Toché scored the goals in the second half.

Coach Víctor Fernández had several casualties for the game. Cuenca and Lucas were still sidelined. The novelties were the returns of German Lux and Juan Carlos after their injuries sustained in the South American tour.

Lux was the keeper, Manuel Pablo covered the right side of the defense, Seoane played on the left, while Insua and Álex Bergantiños were the centre-backs. Wilk and José Rodriguez were the centre midfielders, Remeseiro attacked from the right wing, Arizmendi did it from the left, Juan Carlos was the playmaker and Borja Bastón was the central attacker.

The rival was Segunda B club Racing de Ferrol. The club coached by Manuel Angel García is preparing the new season and presented a lineup with normal starters, including three ex-Depor players: keeper Ian Mackay, centre midfielder Dani Rodriguez and winger Diego Vela.

More was expected from Depor as the rival was a team from Segunda B, but Víctor Fernández’s men showed the same lack of ideas upfront and especially t didn’t create a constant feeling of danger. Juan Carlos was the best player in the first part, the goals arrived in the second with the entry of Fariña, who once again demonstrated special things with the ball at the feet.

The first goal attempt in the game was for Racing after Seoane failed to clear the ball and instead Dani Rodriguez hit the left post of Lux (3’).  Depor had problems to settle into the game and even Arizmendi had to be replaced after just 14 minutes due to a knock on the left knee. He was replaced by Fabril’s winger Cañi.

Depor’s first approximation came until minute 18, Álex Bergantiños headed wide a free-kick released by Remeseiro. Five minutes later the drilling attempt from Borja Bastón was blocked by Mackay.

The game was too disordered during the first part, there were too many fouls and no one dominated the game. Depor were only stepping into the rival’s area from time to time, like the long-range attempt of Juan Carlos that missed the target (37’). The playmaker was the best player in a first half that lacked emotion. The last opportunity in the half was for Racing with Pablo Rey firing from close-range and with Lux clearing the ball to corner-kick (44’).

Depor made five substitutions for the second part and had a promising start creating five scoring chances in a matter of five minutes. First Álex sent close to the far post a cross by Cañi (47’), then substitute Fariña (49’) and José Rodriguez (50’) attempted from close range, but both players sent the ball wide.

And Fariña was going to score the first goal for Deportivo. It was a direct free-kick action in which the Argentine surprised Mackay with his drilling attempt. Racing de Ferrol responded with a drilling shot by Pablo Rey that was blocked by Lux (59’).

Despite the best opportunities were for Depor, there wasn’t a clear dominator during the second half. Los Blanquiazules seemed content with the advantage and only were only approaching the rival’s area through the counterattack, while Racing could only create danger in set-pieces, like the free-kick of Pablo Rey that missed the target (68’).

Later the game became tenser as there were many tackles, including a little fight involving Luisinho and Racing’s Antonio.  There were more scoring opportunities in the last stretch of the match, Toché seized one of the chances to face Mackay one-on-one and score though a crossed shot, the last chance in the game was a free-kick of Dalmau that went over the crossbar (89’).

This is the first victory in the pre-season after five friendly matches; Depor will now face the Teresa Herrera tournament during the weekend; first facing Nacional de Montevideo on Saturday (semifinals, 20h30 CET).
