Depor ended the pre-season with a deserved defeat at El Toralín; the Galicians played a bad game and increased the doubts before next week’s debut in liga. The team lacked ideas and committed errors in defense.

Coach Víctor Fernández said during the week that this lineup should be the base for the debut in liga, and he presented a 4-2-3-1 figure with four new signings on. Lux was the goalkeeper, Laure performed at the right side of the defense, Canella played on the left, while the centre-backs were Lopo and Insua.

Juan Dominguez and José Rodríguez were the centre midfielders, Isaac Cuenca attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did from the left, Luis Fariña was the playmaker and Toché was the centre forward.

At SD Ponferradina, coach José Manuel Diaz presented an offensive team. Yuri de Souza, who gave a lot of problems to Depor in the liga game played at the Riazor during last season, was a starter in attack together with Jesús Berrocal and Acorán Barrera.

Really poor game by Deportivo. This time Fariña barely appeared and therefore the team lacked ideas up front, to the point that it only completed three shots on target in the whole match. Meanwhile, the defense was distracted and committed many errors, mainly defending the set-pieces. A bad way to end the pre-season.

Deportivo were disappeared within the entire first part; Ponferradina dominated the actions but could only reach the area defended by Lux through the set-pieces. Thus came the first goal opportunity for the locals after Andy met a free-kick coming from the left that he sent over the crossbar (17’).

Then Lux committee a penalty over Acorán as the attacker was facing the keeper in a one-on-one action. Yuri scored the goal from the penalty spot. The Galicians lasted in reacting, mainly because Fariña wasn’t appearing, while Cuenca and Luisinho had many problems to surpass the local defense.

Ponferradina were close to score the second goal in  new set-piece, this time a throw-in in which the long cross from Jonathan Ruiz met Berrocal inside the box, but the attacker missed the target (36’). And just four minutes later Depor were going to tie the game in its only approximation in the half.

Toché stole the ball at midfield and released a counterattack, he tried to assist Cuenca on the right wing, but a rival deflected the ball. In the resulting corner-kick Luisinho put the ball at the near post, Lopo headed the ball into the path of Juan Dominguez, who just had to push the ball in from close range.

The second half began with Víctor switching the draw into a 4-3-3, this since Medunjanin made his debut replacing Canella. Luisinho delayed his position and was now the left-back in the formation, while the Bosnian joined Juan Dominguez and José Rodriguez at midfield.

Depor were looking much better in the second part, Medunjanin was looking pretty active and as he controlled the traffic of the ball. The true is that Ponferradina continued to be the superior side, this time with substitute Pablo Infante as the main threat.

Cuenca made a great solo-play at the left wing that almost ended in the second goal (52’). However, Ponferradina were going to be the side scoring the second goal in a counterattack in which Jonathan Ruiz assisted Pablo Infante, who scored from close range after collecting the cross coming from the right.

At minute 65, Toché collected a drilling pass from Cuenca, but the shot of the Murcian attacker was stopped by Dinu Moldovan. That was only the second shot on target for Depor in the game. In the next play, Pablo Infante beat Laure at the right corner of the area and attempted a shot that was blocked by Lux. Then Cavaleiro replaced Cuenca. Both new signings had showed interesting things in the pre-season, but in this match they barely appeared.

Ponferradina had a great chance to score the third goal at minute 73, Adán Gurdiel hit the woodwork after a good play on the left wing, and then the visiting team scored the equalizer. Laure made a long run on the right and released a poor cross that the local defense couldn’t clear, the error was seized by Toché. The defense made a bad clearance and the Murcian attacker seized the chance to score the equalizer with a drilling shot. Then he was replaced by Fabril’s Marcos Remeseiro.

Depor were really lucky to have the game tied ten minutes before the end; Ponferradina was the best team in the game, but they missed a clear chance just before Depor tied the game twice. But that luck ended at minute 86, the locals quickly threw a free-kick at midfield and the defense was too slow to react, substitute Rubén Sobrino goal the ball and chipped the ball over Lux to score the winning goal.

Ponferradina even had a couple of opportunities to score the fourth goal through Pablo Infante and the game ended with a rude foul of Luisinho that cost him the direct red card. In resume a poor impression to end a pre-season that had more shadows than lights. Now Depor awaits the debut in liga, which will take place on next Saturday visiting Granada CF (21h00 CET).
