There were only two surprises in the opening matchday at Primera, the first was to see Atlético Madrid failing to win and the other was the victory of debutant SD Eibar before Champions League aspirant Real Sociedad.

La Liga 2014/15 started last weekend with almost all the expected results. FC Barcelona didn’t face too much opposition as the Catalans beat Elche CF at home (3-0). Messi scored a brace and was the only player that scored more than one goal in the first matchday.

Real Madrid had more problems facing newly promoted Córdoba CF, but in the end the Madrilenians clinched a 2-0 victory. The only aspirant to the title that missed the victory was Atlético Madrid. Los Rojiblancos could only add a goalless draw visiting Rayo Vallecano. It was a stuck game with only four shots on target.

That was one of the two surprises in the matchday; the other was the 1-0 win of SD Eibar over Real Sociedad. It was their first match at Primera and managed to defeat one of the aspirants to the fourth spot in the Champions League.

There was only one away victory in the opening matchday, it was the 0-2 win of Villarreal CF visiting Levante UD. One of the most awaited matches was the visit of Valencia CF to Sevilla CF, it ended 1-1 with the Valencians playing with ten men for the last twenty minutes as Rodrigo de Paul was sent off after only a few seconds on the pitch.

RCD Espanyol also rescued a point visiting UD Almeria (1-1), while the other three matches ended with a local victory. Deportivo was the only side in this matchday that scored the first goal and that later ended losing the game, this during the visit to Granada CF (2-1).

Meanwhile, RC Celta sealed a convincing victory over Getafe CF (3-1). Finally, Malaga CF clinched a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. It was the first game on the season and also the first big controversial performance by referee Mateu Lahoz, who expelled two Malaga’s player within the last ten minutes and also ruled out a last-minute goal by goalie Iraizoz.
