MATCHDAY 04 & 05: THE BIG ONES SEIZE THE MOMENT

26 Sep 2014
The last two matchdays helped the big teams in the league to solidify their positions at the standings. Meanwhile, RC Deportivo La Coruña was one of the six teams that lost both games.

La Liga lived a busy week with two matchdays disputed in six days. Matchday 04 had several interesting stats, like the fact of having 41 goals –the highest mark so far- and also to witness seven visiting teams clinching the victory.  Matchday 05 had lesser goals -22- but no less excitement.

The double action on this week was the perfect occasion to see the favorite teams for the first places in la liga to demonstrate their potential, and they confirmed their status clinching the six or at least four points within the period. Only three teams won both games: Valencia CF, Sevilla CF and Real Madrid.

Valencia CF are now tied in points with FC Barcelona and Sevilla CF after their victories at Getafe CF (0-3) and hosting Córdoba CF (3-0). Los Chés won four games in a row and are living a great moment. It’s exactly the same situation than Sevilla CF; the Andalusians beat Córdoba CF on the road (1-3) and later defeated Real Sociedad at the Pizjúan (1-0).

Real Madrid only needed one week to clear the ghost that was surrounding the team with two big wins, the first trashing Depor at the Riazor (2-8) and the second hosting Elche CF (5-1). Cristiano Ronaldo led the furious reaction with two consecutive hat-tricks.

Meanwhile, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid picked four of the six points in dispute; the Catalans remain to be the only team in the league that hasn’t conceded yet any goal, first they trashed Levante UD on the road (0-5), though later they lost some of the offensive potential only grabbing a point visiting Malaga CF (0-0). What called the attention is that they were unable to complete a shot on target in that game.

Atlético Madrid were surprised by RC Celta at the Calderón with a 2-2 draw and later they got a suffered 0-1 win visiting UD Almeria. RC Celta was another of the winners; the Galicians together with FC Barcelona, Valencia CF, Sevilla CF and Atlético Madrid, represent the five outfits that haven’t lost yet. Los Celestes picked a point in Madrid and later won the Galician derby hosting RC Deportivo (2-1).

Meanwhile, the situation is becoming tight at the bottom. Levante UD finally scored a goal and luckily it was enough to get their first victory on the season hosting Granada CF (1-0). Rayo Vallecano and RCD Espanyol also picked their first win on the season; the Madrilenians did it thanks to a brace from Baptistão hosting Athletic Bilbao (2-1) and the Catalans did it beating Getafe CF at home (2-0). Now the only team that remains winless is Córdoba CF.

Six clubs lost the two matches played on this week: Real Sociedad, RC Deportivo, Elche CF, Athletic Club, Córdoba CF and Getafe CF. It still hard to judge who will be part of the relegation battle, after all eleven clubs are separated by only four points.
