Both teams are living different realities, and different circumstances are moving the coaches to make rotations for the game. Manuel Pablo, Seoane and Salomão could all make their debuts on this season.

This is the second time in which Depor face the newest version of Málaga (Málaga CF, founded in 1994) playing for Copa Del Rey. The previous opportunity was on the season 1999/2000 (second round). The Galicians won the first-leg with a 1-0 score, match played at the Riazor, but later lost 2-1 at La Rosaleda, so the Galicians passed the round by the away goal rule.

In other two opportunities Depor faced the previous version of the Andalusian club, CD Malaga. For the season 1970/71 the Andalusians eliminated the Galicians in the quarterfinals after winning both legs with the same score: 2-0.

The other opportunity in which Depor eliminated Malaga in Copa Del Rey was for the season 1990/91 (fifth round). The Galicians won the first-leg at the Riazor with goals scored by Albistegui, Albis and Uralde (3-2), then held on the advantage in the second game with a 0-0 draw at La Rosaleda.

To notice that the new version of Malaga (Málaga CF) have only won three times after twenty-four official meetings against Deportivo, also that this club, in all its versions, have only won once at the Riazor. It was during the Primera season 1981/82 (0-1).

In the middle of the background after the incidents in Madrid, Deportivo begin the participation in Copa Del Rey, always keeping an eye in the league tournament as the team is currently lying in relegation, too many fronts for an unstable team that has been trying to find some regularity. Coach Víctor Fernández sees the game as an opportunity for the less habitual players and also as a test for the men coming out from injuries, so he plans changes, including to switch back into a 4-2-3-1 system.

The roster for the game will be released until Wednesday, but there are signs that are pointing to the changes. The main one is that normal starters like Pablo Insua, Haris Medunjanin, Cezary Wilk and Iván Cavaleiro only trained for fifteen minutes during Tuesday’s session.

It’s predicted a 4-2-3-1 lineup for the game, with German Lux returning to the goal. The last appearance of the Argentine keeper took place in the 1-4 loss visiting Sevilla CF (October 5). The side defenders are two players debuting on the season: Manuel Pablo on the right and Diego Seoane on the left, then Sidnei Rechel and Modibo Diakité are covering the central spots.

Midfield will be territory for Juan Dominguez and José Rodríguez. Isaac Cuenca will be attacking from the right wing, Luis Fariña is set to return performing on the left wing. The Argentine man didn’t play any game in November after suffering a stress fracture in the meeting against Getafe CF (October 31).

Juan Carlos Real will be the playmaker in the formation and Toché is set to start in attack. The Galician lad is making his first appearance as a starter, while the Murcian attacker already made three appearances in the starting eleven, the last one against Sevilla CF.

With Fariña recovered the only players staying at the injury room are Lucas Pérez and Juanfran Moreno. Centre-back Albert Lopo is returning from suspension and it isn’t clear if he will be picked for the match, while the coach said during the press conference that the last training will help to decide if winger Diogo Salomão will be picked for the match. The coach said that it depends on his feelings and that could have minutes. Finally, the coach also said that it isn’t probable to see Fabril’s players entering into the roster for the match.

José Rodríguez said on Tuesday that the Copa del Rey is an important competition for Depor despite the situation in liga, “Truly we aren’t fine in liga, but are hopeful of this competition, the Cup, and we are going out for everything. We aren’t throwing anything. Right now we aren’t fine, but must change the dynamic as soon as possible, because we need it.”

List of picked players: It will be released until Wednesday after the training session (scheduled at 10h30 CET).

This should have been a new transition year for Malaga CF, team that still trying to find the financial stability to regain their short status of a Champions League team earned a couple of years ago. For this reason they hired a mid-profile coach, Javi Gracia. But the results were better of what was expected and, after a slow start; the Andalusians chained five straight wins and are now only separated from the European zone by the goal difference rule.

So, to reach a European spot is little by little turning into the goal for the season. Now the Copa Del Rey arrives and, despite been an attractive tournament with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético on the other side of the draw, the priorities are moving the coach to make rotations, which is possible thanks to large squad composed by 23 first team members plus some interesting lads from the B squad.

There’s also the fact that the injuries have been hitting this team, to the point that Gracia is missing six players for the clash with Depor, including strikers Nordin Amrabat and Juanmi, his top-scorers in liga. The coach said during his press conference that the tournament is attractive for his team, but his actions are saying otherwise.

And it’s that the roster for the game is composed by several normal starters, but also by the less habitual players, including midfielder Francisco Portillo and Venezuelan attacker Juan Pablo ‘Juanpi’ Añor. The first is set to debut on the season and the second has only played 112 minutes in two games. Besides, winger Duda has been rested for the league game on Saturday.

It’s expected that Gracia will present seven novelties compared to the team that lost with Real Madrid in liga. Mexican Guillermo Ochoa is set to make his debut with the team covering the goal. He hasn’t had any minute so far due to the great form of Kameni.

Venezuelan Roberto Rosales covers the right side of the defense, ex-Rayo Vallecano José Manuel Casado covers the left flank, while the central positions at defense are for Brazilian Weligton Robson and Argentine Marcos Angeleri.

Ignacio Camacho returns from suspension in order to play alongside José Luis García ‘Recio’. Portuguese Ricardo Horta will attack from the right wing, Portillo will do it from the left, finally Juanpi and Argentine Ezequiel Rescaldani are the centre forwards.

The injury of Juanmi is forcing the coach to rest Roque Santa Cruz, who is now the starter in attack. This explains why Rescaldani is a starter, a former player of Vélez Sarsfield that’s making his debut on this campaign (he played six games last season after been signed during the winter window).

Midfielder Ricardo Horta was saying that Malaga is ready to fight in order to reach the last rounds in the competition, ”The game against Deportivo is a good opportunity. The cup is pretty and we will do everything to win it. We want to reach the farthest round, knowing that the big clubs are in the other side of the draw, but all the games are going to be difficult.”

List of picked players (18): Ochoa Kameni (goalkeepers); Weligton, Angeleri, Rosales, Boka, Casado (defenders); Sergi Darder, Camacho, Samuel, Portillo, Horta, Recio, Luis Alberto (midfielders); Santa Cruz, Rescaldani, Juanpi & Samu Castillejo (attackers)
