REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 – ELCHE 0 (LIGA)

16 Dec 2014
Narrow victory and Depor are again out of relegation. The Galicians had the best chances and could have clinched a bigger score. Fariña scored a great goal and Fabricio made four key saves at the end of the meeting.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Fernández returned to the 4-2-3-1 system. The main novelties were that Cezary Wilk, Pablo Insua and Hélder Postiga were all substitutes. Since there were twenty players picked for the clash, two of the men had to sit at the stands, and the chosen ones were Manuel Pablo and Diakité.

Fabricio was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side of the defense, Luisinho played at the left, the centre-backs were Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel. Álex Bergantiños joined Haris Medunjanin at midfield, José Rodríguez attacked from the right wing, Iván Cavaleiro did it from the left, Luis Fariña was the playmaker and Toché was the central attacker.

At Elche CF, coach Fran Escribá presented a 4-4-2 formation with Jonathas de Jesús as the main threat in attack. French/Moroccan Fayçal Fajr played behind him, with Dutch/Cape Verdean Garry Rodrigues attacking from the right flank. Catalan Víctor Rodríguez was attacking from the left wing.

FIRST HALF
Solid first half by Deportivo at the Riazor. It wasn’t impressive as it happened against Valencia CF, but the team found the aim to claim the advantage and hold on at defense before a very poor rival that still created some opportunities.

The game was cold since the beginning, just like the environment at the Riazor (it was raining all night long). There were only 14,167 fans at the stadium and, together with the rain, it converted the match into a cold spectacle despite both sides were playing for important things. The first approximation was for the locals. Toché headed a cross by Luisinho coming from the left, but the effort of the Murcian attacker went out (6’).

Elche CF were trying to play in counterattacks, but they missed strength and more accuracy in the passes. In the case of Depor the game was focused on the left wing, with Luisinho, Cavaleiro and Fariña pretty active in the game, but the Galician outfit continued to miss the ability to create scoring chances.

Garry Rodrigues had the first opportunity for the visiting team. He made a solo-play on the left side of Depor’s defense eluding Luisinho, but his shot from close range missed the target (15’). The first shot on goal in the game came at minute 20, Toché found a cross from the right released by Juanfran, the striker was inside the box and his strong header was saved by visiting goalie Przemysław Tytoń.

And Depor broke the drought with the goal with a great shot by Luis Fariña. A cross of Medunjanin in a free-kick was cleared by the defense, but the ball reached the path of the Argentine playmaker, who fired an incredible curved shot from the left side of the area and into the top-right corner. It’s his first goal in liga. It was also the first goal for the Galicians after 394 minutes scoreless.

Elche tried to react with a cross of Damian Suárez that Jonathas headed on target, but it was too easy for Fabricio (25’). One minute later Medunjanin collected a loose ball at the edge of the area and his drilling attempt was cleared to corner-kick by the defense.

The locals continued pushing and left the impression of been creating more danger, always attacking by the left flank. Meanwhile, the visiting side had a good chance with Víctor Rodríguez, but his crossed shot was blocked by Fabricio (32’). Elche pressed within the final minutes, but their last two crosses didn’t find a receiver inside the area.

SECOND HALF
The Galicians continued to be the best team in the second part, having the best chances and playing the best football. Still, Elche pushed strongly within the final ten minutes and Fabricio had to make two key saves to end securing the victory.

Depor were close to score in the first play in the second part. Cavaleiro released a drilling cross from the right and Toché should have pushed the ball in, but the ball was stuck in a lagoon and Tytoń got the ball first.

The game followed the same path of the first half: Depor were having more ideas on the pitch, mainly with Cavaleiro pretty active, but now on the right wing. However the next chance for Depor came by the left, a long clearance by Lopo turned into a perfect pass to Cavaleiro, the Portuguese released a drilling shot from the edge of the area, it was cleared by Tytoń and later José Rodríguez missed to release the shot from close range (55’)

Elche’s first big chance in the game came at minute 60, Jonathas couldn’t resolve a play before Fabricio and after an assist by Fayçal Fajr, the ball was deflected to corner-kick by Depor’s goalie.

Juan Carlos was the first substitution as he replaced Fariña. The Argentine had a nice performance, but clearly wasn’t fit to play for the full ninety minutes after been out for a month. The second change was the entry of Wilk for Medunjanin. The Polish brought more stability to the game playing alongside Álex, another defensive midfielder. But Juan Carlos barely appeared though he made more touches than Toché (25 against 20).

At minute 69, Depor were again close to score the second goal. Luisinho made a great play on the left wing, he released an accurate drilling cross into the path of José Rodríguez, but his shot was blocked by Cisma.

The same José Rodriguez was close to score at minute 75 after collecting the ball at the edge of the area, his strong shot hit the crossbar and the ball ended cleared by the defense. Until this point Deportivo were deserving more, it had the best chances and the narrow score didn’t reflect their dominion.

But the game changed within the last ten minutes. First Fayçal Fajr made a great play inside the area eluding two defenders and his short range attempt was saved by Fabricio (83’). In the resulting corner-kick defender Enzo Roco attempted from close range and Fabricio made a new key save. Lopo touched the ball with the arm when he was on the ground in the deflection, but the referee didn’t whistle the penalty.

The tide had changed and Víctor ordered the final substitution. Insua replaced Toché and Deportivo returned to the line of five defenders. Elche pushed within the final minutes plus the stoppage time, but it didn’t have any other clear opportunity.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo got the three points for the third time on the season, but the true is that the Galician outfit deserved a bigger score after all the chances created. Fariña scored a great goal and the team suffered within the final ten minutes, to the point that Fabricio had to make two key saves in this frame of the meeting. Luisinho was the best player for the locals. Víctor Fernández saved his job.

The win is pulling Depor out of the relegation zone and leaves Elche as the bottom club in Liga. The final game in 2014 will be the visit to Villarreal CF (Sunday, 12h00 CET). Luisinho will be suspended for the game after picking the fifth yellow card on the season, but before the Blanquiazul outfit will define the pass in Copa visiting Malaga CF (La Rosaleda, Thursday, 22h00 CET).
