New poor game by Deportivo. The poor performance at midfield and attack led to the deadly counterattacks that provoked the three goals. Only Fabricio avoided a bigger lose with his saves.

Coach Víctor Fernández presented the expected men, but it was a 4-3-3 formation with the novelty that Bosnian Haris Medunjanin was benched for the first time since matchday 01 –he was a substitute then as he arrived to the club only three days before the game- His spot at the starting eleven was for Juan Domínguez.

Fabricio Agosto was the starting keeper, Juanfran covered the right side in defense, Roberto Canella played on the left, Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs, Álex Bergantiños joined Juan Domínguez at midfield. José Rodríguez played in front of them. Iván Cavaleiro attacked from the right flank, Luis Fariña did it from the left and José Verdú ‘Toché’ was the centre forward.

At Villarreal CF, coach Marcelino Toral surprised leaving in-form Moi Gómez on the bench, instead Jonathan dos Santos attacked from the right wing with Manu Trigueros as the other novelty at midfield. The other references in attack were Denís Chéryshev, Luciano Vietto and Ikechukwu Uche.

Another poor first part by Deportivo. The Galicians didn’t do anything in attack and failed to meet the target in their ten crosses, but the factor that defined the game were the constant counterattacks by Villarreal that caused the goal and the clearest scoring opportunities.

The game started with Villarreal pushing upfront. At minute 5, Uche couldn’t shot from inside the box as he was blocked by Álex Bergantiños, in the next play Vietto fired from the edge of the area, but the ball went wide.

Depor had big problems to settle on the pitch. It was barely reaching the opposite area and when it did it then it was losing the ball pretty easily, which allowed Villarreal to unleash the counterattack. So it wasn’t a surprise to see the locals scoring the first goal early in the game.

Denís Chéryshev led the counterattack on the left wing and released a drilling and crossed shot that Fabricio deflected, Jonathan dos Santos arrived on time to collect the ball and score from close range.

The early goal didn’t change the picture, because Villarreal continued dominating the actions, pushing in attack before a clueless and chocked Depor that was barely clearing the ball from its area. The visiting outfit only had a solid presence in attack until minute 14, there were a series of crosses by Juanfran coming from the right, but those attempts never reached a receiver.

It gave the impression that the game was turning to be more balanced with Depor having long ball possessions, but Villarreal were still dangerous in the counterattack. At minute 20, the locals had a double chance. Vietto led the counterattack and his shot from the edge of the area was deflected by Fabricio, Jaume Costa collected the loose ball and also attempted from the edge of the area, but the Canarian keeper made a new save.

Cavaleiro and Fariña were switching positions, but Depor were still unable to create anything in attack. Just endless crosses that gave some problems to local goalie Sergio Asenjo. But the decisive factor in the game continued to be the counterattacks by Villarreal. Depor were constantly losing the ball at midfield, which allowed these actions.

The half ended with Villarreal again close to score in a counterattack, this time Sidnei cleared the ball before it reached the path of Vietto (42’). The only shot for the Galicians in this half was a deflected attempt by Cavaleiro from inside the area (43’). To emphasize that Depor released ten crosses in this half and all of them missed the target.

Villarreal CF was close to pay a high price for his lack of aim, this since Depor could have drew the game at minute 65, but immediately the locals scored twice and secured the three points before a clueless rival that showed again a poor impression on the road.

The second half began with Gio dos Santos replacing Uche, the Nigerian got injured in the last minute of the first part and had to be replaced. Depor finally met the target with a cross at minute 48, Toché collected the ball from Juanfran then assisted Cavaleiro, who fired the ball over the crossbar when he was inside the box.

The first big opportunity for the locals in this half came one minute later, another counterattack left Gio dos Santos alone before Fabricio and the Canarian goalie cleared the danger to corner-kick. That was his fifth save on the game (six in the whole meeting).

At minute 53, Chéryshev attempted a drilling shot from the edge of the area that was blocked by Depor’s goalie. Fariña, who was the star in the past game with Elche CF, appeared for the first time until minute 57. It was a direct free-kick action in which he sent the ball over the crossbar.

The first modification ordered by Víctor was the entry of Isaac Cuenca replacing Fariña. The Argentine did nothing in the game, but neither the Catalan was a factor. Cuenca touched the ball in 13 opportunities, but he was sterile in attack.

Villarreal continued to be the superior side, but the narrow score invited to dream with a possible equalizer. And that dream was close to be materialized at minute 65. A long ball possession for Depor ended with Álex Bergantiños firing from the edge of the area, the ball was cleared by the defense when Asenjo was already defeated and in the resulting corner-kick Sidnei was close to score with a crossing attempt that was saved by the local goalie.

And from the possible 1-1 the game went into the 3-0 in a matter of five minutes. The second goal came after Depor failed to clear the ball in a corner-kick action and the play turned into a short counterattack with Víctor Ruiz drilling a cross from the left that Luciano Vietto only had to push from inside the box.

Bruno was close to score with a direct free-kick attempt (71’) and then the action of the second goal was repeated, this time with Chéryshev leading the counterattack on the left to end drilling the ball into the box, again Vietto was there to push the ball in.

Postiga and Wilk were the last two substitutions replacing Toché and José Rodríguez, but the game was already decided. Substitute Pina was sent off only five minutes after entering the game, this for a tough challenge over Álex Bergantiños.

Depor had a clear chance to score at minute 84, Gabriel Paulista missed to clear a cross coming from the left, he ended assisting Cavaleiro, but the Portuguese attacker couldn’t score from close range as his drilling shot was blocked by Asenjo.

Another poor match by Deportivo. The Galicians were killed by their poor game at midfield, which led to the deadly counterattacks by the locals that were transformed into three goals. The score could have been bigger, but the six saves made by Fabricio prevented a bigger damage, four of them in clear opportunities for Villarreal CF.

Depor could end the year in relegation depending of other results. The Galicians are now entering into the Christmas break and will return to train until December 30. The next game is at the Riazor hosting Athletic Club (January 3, 22h00 CET). Sidnei is suspended for that game after picking the fifth yellow card on the season.
