REVIEW: FABRIL 2 – PONTEVEDRA 1 (TERCERA)

02 Feb 2015
Big win for Deportivo B facing the leaders and the most in-form team in the league. The lads harassed in the first part, but wasted too many chances. Cardoso scored, then the rival tied and Fabril needed a late penalty in order to win.

BEFORE THE GAME
For the second straight week, Fabril were facing one of the leaders in the league. Coach Manu Mosquera was recovering almost all the injured players, included winger Jesús Cañizares ‘Cañi’: The only player out injured was midfielder Santi Taboada. Quique Fornos and Pancho Cotos didn’t enter into the roster as both were joining Juvenil A for the weekend.

The lineup was a 4-2-3-1. David Gómez was the goalkeeper, Adrián Martínez was playing at the right-back position, Jorge Fernández performed on the left, the centre-backs were Iago López and Róber Suárez. Sam Piette and Ángel Fernández were the centre midfielders, Miguel Cardoso was performing on the right wing, Korean Kim Woo-Hong was the left winger, Marcos Remeseiro was the playmaker and Dani Iglesias was the centre forward.

Pontevedra CF arrived to Abegondo as the leader in the Galician group after only losing one of the previous sixteen games, coach Luisito arrived at the beginning of the first round and he changed the mentality of a team that looks like the main candidate to promotion, though Los Granates were dragging a mark of missing the victory over Fabril in their previous eight meetings (one draw and seven defeats).

Ex- Fabril goalie Edú Sousa was a starter with the team and was going to be very important in the game. Los Granates made singing during the winter window, one of them is Rubén Lobato, a young left-back that’s coming loaned from Atlético Madrid C and that was also a starter. Jacobo Millán and Pablo Carnero were the references up front, the latter is the top scorer at the team (8 goals).

THE MATCH
Highly entertaining game between two of the most in-forms teams at Tercera División. Fabril outplayed its rival for an hour, but only managed to score one goal. Later Pontevedra put a lot of pressure, equalized the game and was even close to win. It seemed that Depor’s lads were going to waste a good chance to approach the first place, but a late penalty allowed to get the three points and claim a deserved reward.

It was a solid presentation of the whole team, perhaps the best on this season. And the one that shone in the first half was Dani Iglesias, the striker was a real menace for the visitors completing three shots, creating four opportunities, assisting in the first goal and even provoking two yellow cards, all of that in just 45 minutes.

The dominion by Depor B was clear since the kick-off, only seconds after the start Dani Iglesias got the ball inside the area, but he was unable to release a shot. And before the 15-minute mark visiting goalie Edú Sousa had already made two key saves. The first before Remeseiro (13’) and the second before Dani Iglesias (14’).

The harassment continued and Edú had to make more saves, the first before Cardoso (19’) and later a lucky one after a shot by Ángel hit a rival and somehow the keeper reacted on time to touch it with the leg and avoid the first goal (21’).

Depor B were the superior side in the whole first part, Canadian Piette ruled at midfield, with Remeseiro creating the offensive game and with the constant arrival by full-backs Adrián and Jorge Fernández. The latter started the season as a substitute, but lately is one of the best players at the team.

Pontevedra’s first chance in the game came at minute 22, Carnero got the ball after a bad clearance by , but his long-distance shot went over the crossbar. Fabril were deserving the lead and it got it in a play started by their best player: Dani Iglesias. The striker ran from midfield and into the left wing to assist Miguel Cardoso, who scored the goal with a powerful crossed shot. It’s his eighth goal on the season.

After the goal there was a pause of fifteen minutes, with Depor B having the ball possession, but without chances. Then, suddenly, each side had a clear opportunity at the end of the first half. At minute 45, Dani Iglesias made a great solo-play assisting Kim, who released a short-distance shot that was saved by Edú, the loose ball was got by Ángel and Pontevedra’s goalie made a new save. In the counterattack Carnero was left alone before David Gómez and the keeper blocked the ball.

The second part was a different story. Pontevedra were putting more pressure at midfield and Fabril missed fluency. Still, Depor B were still having the best opportunities, at least the beginning of the half. In this part the best players were Remeseiro and Kim, the latter a dagger attacking by the sides during the counterattacks.

Remeseiro sent a couple of crosses into the area that didn’t find a receiver and then Manu Mosquera made the first substitution as Cañi replaced Cardoso, who isn’t totally fit after his injury.

And suddenly Pontevedra equalized in its first chance in the half. A long throw from midfield was headed by Jacobo and substitute Juan Vidal ‘Anxo’ got the ball inside the area to drill the ball past David Gómez. That was the first goal allowed by Fabril at Abegondo since October 26, which meant to break a mark of 587 minutes without leaking a goal at home, the best streak since 2006.

Thirty minutes were remaining and Fabril had wasted the countless opportunities enjoyed in the first hour of the meeting. The goal changed the tide as Pontevedra became the most dangerous team in the field. At minute 65, David Gómez had to make two saves before Carnero and Kevin, the keeper even needed to see Iago López clearing the danger at the goal line.

Ten Mosquera moved the bench and Francis Massampu replaced Ángel. The draw was now a 4-4-2 and the game turned to be open with both sides having chances. French Massampu helped to win the aerial battle, but the one having the opportunities was Korean Kim. At minute 75 he was close to score with a shot saved by Edú, three minutes later he missed the target from the edge of the area.

In the middle of both actions Massampu scored from close range after a crossed shot by Remeseiro, but he was offside. Later Dani Iglesias headed the ball wide (82’). It seemed the draw was done, but Fabril were going to have the big chance to win the game at the last minute.

Adrián attempted a shot from the edge of the area and the ball hit the arm of Pedro García, the referee whistled the penalty and Marcos Remeseiro didn’t waste the chance with a strong shot from the spot. It’s his sixth goal on the season. There was only time to applaud Dani Iglesias as he walked away replaced by Queijeiro, who made his third appearance on the season.

AFTER THE GAME
Giant victory for Deportivo B. The team had a lot of scoring opportunities before the leader in the league, it only scored once and was close to lose the game after Pontevedra pushed hard within minutes 60 and 80, but a late penalty helped to clinch the win. Great game by the whole team, especially by Dani Iglesias, Kim and Remeseiro. Depor B are in the fight for the top place in the group, now lying only five points below Pontevedra. The next game is the visit to relegation-troubled Bergantiños CF.

Comments by Manu Mosquera: ”I believe that our first half was really good, because we are clear that we need to improve our performance as the rivals normally focus in our output of the ball. Today they didn’t press Iago in the output of the ball and we had worked with him in case the rival does what they have done today. Within the first fifteen minutes we already had completed four or five shots on target; it's very important as sometimes we miss that: to complete more shots, to make the last pass. That’s the reason why I believe our first half was better. The equalizer changed everything, the next fifteen minutes were tough, because I know what the player feels, he feels that’s facing a motivated team and we must recognize that, if Pontevedra would have scored in those minutes, then it would have been more complicated, but this is how to compete: to hold on in the tougher minutes and then loose yourself. We believe that we deserved to win and we are very happy with this victory.”
