PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO VS EIBAR (LIGA)

06 Feb 2015
Insua and Cuenca are set to start as Sidnei and José Rodriguez are out. Víctor has plenty of choices due to the depth of the squad. Eibar are trying to confirm their role of revelation of the season and face the game with defensive problems.

STATISTICS: A DANGEROUS TEAM ON THE ROAD
SD Eibar represent one of the four teams in la liga that have added more points on the road than at home. The Basques added fifteen points in this condition thanks to their four away victories: 0-2 at Elche CF (matchday 04), 2-3 at Rayo Vallecano (matchday 10), 0-1at RC Celta (matchday 13) & 1-2 at RCD Espanyol (matchday 17). This is the sixth best visiting record in the league.

Meanwhile, Deportivo have only added twelve points playing at the Riazor during this Primera campaign, this after only winning three home meetings, though it’s necessary to notice that two of those wins came within the last four games at the Riazor. In the other two meetings Los Blanquiazules lost before Barca and were denied of a new success after a late goal against Granada CF (2-2).

This is the first time in which Depor are facing Eibar at the Riazor playing at Primera, the Basques visited A Coruña in six previous opportunities, but playing at Segunda. Depor won the first three meetings, but later was unable to win the next three. The last home victory over Eibar took place during the Segunda season 1988/89; at the time the team coached by Arsenio Iglesias clinched a 1-0 win with a goal scored by Carlos Fontana.

DEPORTIVO: DEPTH AT THE BENCH
The casualties return to hit Deportivo, but it shouldn’t be a problem for coach Victor Fernández, at least in terms of numbers. For the game against SD Eibar there are four casualties as José Rodriguez is suspended and as there are three players at the injury room: Hélder Postiga, Sidnei Rechel and Luis Fariña. The latter is also suspended, but his skin infection will keep him at bay for more days.

But having a squad with 26 players, the coach has enough material to cover the absentees; actually he had to leave four men out of the roster as there was no room for them in an 18-men list. For the first time on the season the four winter signings are part of the list of picked players: midfielder Celso Borges, striker Oriol Riera, winger Hélder Costa and defender Borja López.

Víctor will keep using a 4-2-3-1 system, but is forced to make two substitutions due to the casualties of Sidnei and José Rodríguez. Their replacements are Pablo Insua and Isaac Cuenca.

The Galician centre-back has only been a starter in nine games on this league season, the last one was against Athletic Club (January 3).  In the case of the Catalan winger, he was also a starter in nine opportunities, seven of them within the first ten matchdays. The last appearance as a starter for Cuenca was against FC Barcelona (January 18).

Fabricio is the starting keeper, Juanfran Moreno covers the right side of the defence, Luisinho performs on the left, while Albert Lopo joins Insua at the central positions.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges are the centre midfielders, the Central American is coming from a big debut scoring twice. Cuenca attacks from the right wing, Iván Cavaleiro does it from the left, Lucas Pérez is the playmaker and Oriol Riera is the centre forward.

Winger Diogo Salomão and centre midfielder Cezary Wilk remain out of the roster which clearly demonstrates that both aren’t entering into the coach’s plans. The other two players out for tactical reasons are right-back Manuel Pablo and left-back Roberto Canella.

Oriol Riera said before the game that Eibar is a rival to watch, “Eibar are the revelation of league. No one thought that they will be at the middle of the standings at this stage. They are doing a spectacular job. A lot of players there were at Segunda B some years ago. It’s a competitive team doing the right things. We need to start adding points in these kinds of games; it will clarify our situation and will allow us to play with more calm.”

Meanwhile, Álex Bergantiños was saying that Depor are living the best moment on the season, "I believe we are living our best moment on the season. I hope it won't be the best, because it will mean that we will improve from here until the end of season. We paid the price at the beginning due to the circumstances as we had new signings that didn’t know the club, neither the group of players nor the league and, little by little, the team has been strengthened.”

Luisinho was explaining the importance of a victory, ”We are living a good situation with the victory visiting Rayo. We missed two points at the Riazor against Granada that would have been really useful, but I see that the team is fine. Now it’s more solid and solidary. Now we have a great opportunity, at home, before Eibar. We must win in order to get stability at the standings.”

List of picked players (18): Lux, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Laure, Insua, Lopo, Borja López, Juanfran, Luisinho (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Medunjanin, Celso Borges, Hélder Costa, Lucas Pérez, Cuenca (midfielders); Oriol Riera, Cavaleiro & Toché (attackers)

EIBAR: SECOND IMPULSE
SD Eibar are without doubt the surprise of the season. The only team without experience at Primera and the one with the lower budget hasn’t found too many obstacles to stay far from the relegation places, currently they are 8th, lying nine points above the pit. But they could be slowing down after only adding one of the last nine points in dispute.

It’s true that they spent five games without wins back in September/October, but they cannot afford this same situation at this height of the competition, so the team coached by Gaizka Garitano needs to find a second impulse before getting into deep trouble, a push that could pull them to achieve the permanence before the expectations.

Midfielder Dani García was talking of the issue during the week, ”We have lowered the performance after the level shown against Espanyol in the first game of the year. We need to react and give a little more from ourselves. After the last two defeats we are eager to play on Friday as we face a rival that will give a lot of problems at their house. It will be a similar game to the one on last year; they have improved a lot and it will be equal. There are good and bad streaks, it’s better to have the bad one now and before rivals having a bigger budget than us.”

For the game Garitano is facing problems at the sides in defence due to the suspensions of Abraham Minero and Manuel Castellano ‘Lillo’. Luckily Eneko Bóveda is recovered from an adductor muscle injury and returns to the right side of the defence. The left spot will be for Catalan Dídac Vilà, who is sent to debut in liga after only playing once in Copa Del Rey.

With Raúl Albentosa gone, captain  Txema Añibarro is set to make his fourth appearance in the competition joining Raúl Navas at the central positions in defence. The draw is a 4-2-3-1 with Dani Garcia, the field player with more minutes at the team (1,778), returning from a suspension and joining Jon Errasti at midfield.

Ander Capa attacks from the right wing, the 22-year-old player is the one replacing injuredManu del Moral in the formation. Saúl Berjón, who has provided six assists in the tournament, attacks from the left flank. Mikel Arruabarrena is the playmaker and Italian Federico Piovaccari is the centre forward. Arruabarrena and Piovaccari have netted five goals in liga, so combined they netted 10 of the 25 goals in favour for the Basques (40% of the total).

Defender Raúl Navas was talking of the game during the week, ”We hope to show our strengths at the Riazor. The teams that weren’t fine in the first round must now show the face, and we’ll see now their quality. Eibar are able to compete at any field and there’s no anxiety. We are only thinking of picking the three points at the Riazor.”

List of picked players (20): Xabi Irureta, Jon Irazusta (goalkeepers), Bóveda, Txema Añibarro, Ekiza, Didac Vilá, Rafa Paz, Raúl Navas (defenders); Borja Fernández, Ander Capa, Errasti, Dani Nieto, Dani García, Boateng, Saúl Berjón, Javi Lara (midfielders); Ángel, Arruabarrena, Dejan Lekić & Piovaccari (attackers)
