Back-to-back wins for Deportivo. It was a peaceful game before a poor Eibar that barely gave problems, but the Galicians only prevailed after the Basques committed two big errors inside the area.

Coach Víctor Fernández presented the expected lineup for the game. Fabricio Agosto was the keeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side of the defense, Luisinho covered the left, while the central positions at defense were for Pablo Insua and Albert Lopo.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Isaac Cuenca attacked from the right wing, Iván Cavaleiro did it from the left, Lucas Pérez was the playmaker and Oriol Riera was the centre forward. New signings Borja López and Hélder Costa were on the bench in their first game with Deportivo.

At Elche CF, coach Gaizka Garitano presented two novelties in his 4-2-3-1 system. Txema Añibarro started on the bench and Borja Ekiza was one of the two centre-backs. Ex-Depor Borja Fernández was a starter playing at midfield. The references in attack were Saúl Berjón, Mikel Arruabarrena and Federico Piovaccari. It was a cold night in A Coruña with a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius.

Boring first part at the Riazor. Eibar seemed frozen by the cold weather and didn’t even complete a shot in this half, while Depor had the ball possession, but missed ideas and clarity up front. Only three opportunities at the end of the half lighten what was turning to be a boring game.

The pace was high within the first minutes, but both sides were missing to create scoring opportunities. Oriol Riera was moving across the attacking line and at times was falling into the left wing. The first goal opportunity for the Galicians came at minute 7; it was during the second corner-kick in the game. Celso Borges found the ball at the box after the cross coming from the left, but he missed the target.

The locals were using the same formula used in the past meeting with Rayo Vallecano: a high pressure giving problems to the rival’s output of the ball. For this reason Piovaccari touched the ball for the first time until minute 10.

With the passage of the minutes, Depor lost precision in attack. Cavaleiro wasn’t finalizing the plays, Lucas was disappeared, while the arrivals by Juanfran and Luisinho didn’t bring anything. For this reason the game became boring as there were no shots on target within the first 20 minutes.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges made a big game and proved that their partnership could be important. The Galician completed the 79% of his passes and ruled midfield territory. The Central American wasn’t too participative in attack this time, but he was taking the set-pieces and brought a connection with the attackers.

The first arrival for Eibar came at minute 22, Luisinho lost the mark of Capa and he ended releasing a low cross that Fabricio cleared at the box. That was one of their few approximations by the visiting outfit. At this moment on the game the Galicians were having problems to step into the rival’s area, though they neither were facing difficulties to contain the counterattacks by the Basques.

Not even the set-pieces were working. At minute 28, the Galicians had a good chance through a lateral free-kick, but the drilling cross by Cavaleiro was cleared by the visiting defence. Then Juanfran Moreno showed up to complete the first two shots on target in the game.

At minute 31, the Madrilenian got the ball at the right side of the area, but his volley was stopped by visiting goalie Xabi Irureta. Just one minute later the right-back repeated the action, this time his attempt was cleared by the keeper and into a corner-kick.

The next opportunity was also for Deportivo. Cavaleiro managed to elude three rivals at the edge of the area and ended assisting Lucas Pérez, who entered the area by the left corner to release a drilling shot that passed close to the near post (37’). For the first time in the game Cavaleiro and Lucas were combining, but there were no more opportunities.

Depor found the goals in this half and it was a deserved reward after been the best team on the pitch, but it only did it before a really poor Eibar betrayed by its own errors. And it’s that two big defensive mistakes paved the way to conquer a refreshing victory at the Riazor.

Depor started the second part dominating, with a cross by Cuenca that didn’t meet a receiver (46’). Two minutes later Lopo didn’t connect properly a lateral free-kick by Cavaleiro. Still, the ball went close to the far post.

And the Galicians found the goal in the only possible way: a big error by the rival. Juanfran released a volley into the edge of the area, he was searching for the head of Riera, Irureta tried to clear the danger with the fists, but it only assisted Lucas Pérez, who just had to push the ball in to conquer his third goal on the season.

The Galicians had a new chance to score after a cross by Borges in a lateral free-kick that was headed by Cavaleiro, but he missed the target (55’). One minute later Eibar completed its first shot on target, it was a right footed effort by Piovaccari blocked by Fabricio. The Basques only completed two shots on target in the game and were clearly the worst team that has visited the Riazor on this campaign.

Then Víctor Fernández made the first substitution and Hélder Costa debuted replacing Cuenca. The Catalan made a decent first part, but was already disappeared in the second. The entry of the Portuguese added some strength to Depor; he was switching positions with Cavaleiro and left a positive impression with his individual moves.

For the final fifteen minutes the fans at the Riazor were having the same feeling than against Granada CF, because the locals had the best chances, but the narrow lead was inviting to suffer. However it turned to be the most placid game on the season after Depor scored the second goal.

And again it was after a big error by the visiting defence. Dejan Lekić had entered as Garitano was searching for direct football in order to tie the game, while Ángel only had seconds on the pitch when Ekiza made bad pass to Irureta, later the keeper was too slow to clear the ball before Cavaleiro, who claimed control of it to score his third goal on the season from close range.

In this way Depor spent the last ten minutes without any problem and even having more chances to score, like the shot by Oriol Riera from the edge of the area that missed the target (85’). The only worry was that Juanfran had to be replaced due to a muscle problem. Laure claimed his spot and Medunjanin played the last minutes taking the place of Cavaleiro.

For the first time on the season Deportivo clinched two straight victories, it only happened after SD Eibar, the worst team that have passed through the Riazor on this season (it only completed the 61% of their passes), committed two deadly mistakes inside the area that allowed a peaceful and clean victory at home. Lucas Pérez and Cavaleiro netted the goals and now they are the top-scorers at the team.

The result is pulling Depor to mid-table and now waiting for other results in order to assess its new status. On next Saturday Los Blanquiazules face a tough challenge visiting the Bernabéu in order to play against Real Madrid. Pablo Insua will miss that game after picking the fifth yellow card on the season during this match.
