MATCHDAY 23: THE LOCALS PREVAIL

17 Feb 2015
Seven of the ten visiting teams in the matchday were unable to score a goal; Atlético Madrid could have lost the chance to continue aspiring to the title. Deportivo remain five points above the relegation zone.

In a season in which the visiting teams have presented better results than in previous years, now there has been a matchday in which the local teams clearly prevailed. And it’s that only two visiting outfit was able to win while seven of them were even unable to score a goal.

The main news at the top positions is that Atlético Madrid unexpectedly lost in their visit to RC Celta (2-0). The Madrilenians are now seven points behind the first place and six away from the runners-up, so this is maybe the moment when they say good-bye to the dream of repeating the title.

Leaders Real Madrid clinched a suffered 2-0 win over Deportivo, while FC Barcelona added a more easy victory over Levante UD (5-0) with a new exhibition by Lionel Messi, who scored a hat-trick plus providing an assist. Both teams are still separated by one point and will continue to be the main aspirants to the league title.

The battle for the fourth place, and last spot for the Champions League, continues as both Valencia CF and Sevilla CF won their games. The Valencians clinched a 1-0 win over Getafe CF, it was a suffered game decided until minute 70 as ex-Depor Juan Rodriguez committed a penalty over Negredo. Easier was the challenge for the Andalusians as they dispatched Córdoba CF with a 3-0 score.

Meanwhile, Villarreal CF were surprised in their visit to Rayo Vallecano and lost 2-0 after conceding twice in the second half. But Malaga CF didn’t take advantage of the situation to reduce the distance in the fight for the sixth place after losing at home before RCD Espanyol (0-2); it was the only away win on the matchday. The Andalusians missed a penalty at minute 84 when the score was 0-1 and conceded the second goal in the stoppage time.

The situation at the top of the standings:

1 Real Madrid 57 72 22
2 Barcelona 56 67 13
3 Atlético 50 47 22
4 Valencia 47 41 20
5 Sevilla 45 39 26
6 Villarreal 41 37 22
7 Malaga 35 25 27
8 Espanyol 29 30 34

Not too good news among the clubs in relegation, the only side that was able to get something positive was Granada CF, though they wasted the chance to leave the pit after only getting a point in the goalless draw hosting Athletic Club (0-0). It’s only the second 0-0 game in 2015.

Meanwhile, UD Almeria only got a 2-2 draw hosting Real Sociedad despite having twice the advantage. The biggest winner was Elche CF with their 0-1 win at SD Eibar. The negative results of the last places allow Depor to keep a five-point distance with relegation; actually there’s an interesting situation as there’s now a four-point gap between the 17th and the 18th, the highest difference between” heaven and hell” during this season.

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

16 Almeria 23 22 36

MATCHDA 24: THE GALICIAN DERBY
