REVIEW: ALMERIA 0 – DEPORTIVO 0

01 Mar 2015
An aimless Deportivo were unable to get the three points before a poor rival. Not even against ten players after Thievy was sent off at the middle of the first part. 25 shots for the Galicians, the highest number on this season.

BEFORE THE GAME
Isaac Cuenca returned to the starting formation and performed on the left wing. The rest was the expected 4-2-3-1 squad of coach Víctor Fernández. Fabricio Agosto was the starting keeper, Juanfran Moreno played at the right side of the defence, the left position was for Luisinho, while the central spots were for Sidnei Rechel and Pablo Insua.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders. Juan Rodriguez performed on the right wing, Cuenca attacked from the left flank, Lucas Pérez was the playmaker and Oriol Riera was the centre forward.

At UD Almeria, coach Ignacio Martínez presented the expected 4-2-3-1 formation, with the novelty of Miguel Ángel Corona, who was staying at the centre of the field, while the references in attack were Thievy Bifouma and Tomer Hemed.

FIRST HALF
Again Depor lacked aim to define a meeting. The Galicians completed fifteen shots only in the first part, but the score was 0-0 at half-time. Almeria had a strong start, but later a serious Depor, led by Lucas Pérez, was the best team on the pitch.

The first goal attempt didn’t last too much. Insua committed a foul over Thievy on the left wing, in the resulting free-kick Hemed attempted a bicycle-kick and the ball went directly into the path of Fabricio, who made the save (2’).

That play only demonstrated that Almeria were going out for everything, they were putting a high pressure and Depor had problems with the output of the ball. But this impression was cleared in the next minutes. The first approximation for the Galicians took place at minute 6, Lucas got the ball at the left wing and his cross/shot went over the crossbar.

Little by little Depor gained fluency and the cracks at the local defense showed up, mainly on the left wing, with Lucas and Riera switching positions to penetrate by that side. At minute 11, Oriol Riera picked the ball at the right wing and ended releasing a shot that missed the target.

At minute 14, defender Trujillo found the ball inside the area after a corner-kick, and his header was saved by Fabricio. In the counterattack José Rodríguez got the ball at the edge of the area and his shot went wide.

Depor’s first big chance came at minute 17, a low cross by Juanfran was met by Oriol Riera and his attempt was saved by Julián Cuesta and later Lucas didn’t arrive in time to prevent the clearance by the defence. At minute 25, José Rodriguez attempted again after an assist by Lucas and again the midfielder missed the target.

This last chance just demonstrated that Deportivo were now the best team in the game. The connection Thievy-Hemed wasn’t’ appearing for the locals and instead it was Lucas Pérez who was the most dangerous player in the game. At minute 33 he assisted José Rodriguez, who again missed the target.

Lucas and José Rodríguez were the most active players in attack, with Oriol Riera also participating, while Cuenca was looking poor on the left flank, though he had two chances within the last ten minutes: a drilling shot that was too easy for Julián (37’) and later a crossed shot saved by the local goalie (42’).

Thievy had  his first clear chance in the game at minute 39, he found the ball inside the area after a deflection, but his crossed shot missed the target (39’). Still, Depor were closer to score at the end of the first part, Riera was close to score at minute 44 after getting the ball from Sidnei in a corner-kick, but the ball was cleared. The half ended with Depor completing fifteen shots in the first part, the highest number on this season, but there were no goals.

SECOND HALF
The final half was a copy of the first, Almeria pushed at the beginning and later fell down before a superior Depor, but the Galicians were unable to score a goal despite playing with one more player for the final thirty minutes.

The second part started in the same way than the first: Almeria were putting a high pressure and thus enjoyed the first big chance. At minute 48, a shot from Verza couldn’t be blocked properly by Fabricio and the loose ball was found by Mauro Dos Santos, but the defender didn’t find the goal from the right side of the area.

Then Depor had two opportunities, the first a counterattack by Luisinho on the left that ended with Riera assisting Lucas and the latter sending the ball over the crossbar (50’). One minute later Celso Borges had a direct free-kick that turned to be a drilling shot stopped by Julián.

Oriol Riera had a new big chance to score, similar to the one had in the derby. This time the pass by Álex broke the offside trap leaving the Catalan striker alone before the keeper and he sent the ball over the crossbar.

Then a crucial play in the game: Thievy hit Juanfran in the face when both players were disputing the ball at the left side and the referee showed the second yellow to him –he was booked in the first part for a foul at midfield- Thirty minutes were remaining and the visiting outfit had everything in favour to clinch the win.

Deportivo assumed the control of the game after the expulsion and continued releasing attacks and shots, at minute 56, Lucas couldn’t sent the ball between the posts after getting a long pass at the left wing. Depor were forgiving too much and Víctor decided to make the first change allowing the entry of Hélder Costa replacing José Rodríguez.

But the Portuguese didn’t add the needed fluidity in attack, neither Fariña nor Medunjanin, the other two substitutes that replaced Cuenca and Álex. Actually, Depor left a more pale impression after getting the numeric advantage. So, there was no excitement within the final twenty minutes. Depor were crippled and Almeria were content with the result.

Almeria even ended the game with nine men after side defender Macedo was sent off with two consecutive yellow cards for protesting a foul committed at midfield, but the only clear chance for the Galicians within the final fifteen minutes was a header of Riera that was easily stopped by Julián (78’).

AFTER THE GAME
Tasteless draw in Andalusia. Deportivo completed 25 shots, their highest mark for a game on this season, but it ended scoreless despite the rival played with ten men for thirty minutes. Third straight game scoreless, though it’s also true that the defence clinched a new clean sheet.

Depor lose the goal-average before Almeria, but the point added increased the difference with relegation to three points after the bottom three games lost their games. The next liga meeting is the visit of Sevilla CF to the Riazor (Saturday, 16h00 CET).
