REVIEW: BETIS 1 - DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

15 Oct 2006
Deportivo was near to obtain its first victory away from the Riazor, but a last-minute penalty taken by Robert gave a point to the local side, Arizmendi scored a wonderful goal from 30 meters and Filipe was sent off during the second half.

BEFORE THE GAME
As it was expected Caparr??s presented the same lineup used in the last victory in Riazor. In this way Arizmendi covered the right wing and Filipe Luis the left side, while Riki performed as striker. In Betis the main novelty was that Irureta left Robert on the bench, the Basque coach preferred the combination between Xisco and Rafael Sob?s in the striking zone.

FIRST HALF
Irureta said prior to the game that his squad must be the one taking the initiative on the pitch, and that was what happened.  Maldonado on the right wing and Ed?? on the left gave a lot of troubles to the Galicians, specially to Barrag??n. The first clear chance arrived soon for the home side. Maldonado made a great cross to the centre, but Xisco sent the ball out.

Deportivo was trying to create pressure in midfield and generate danger in counterattacks, in their first opportunity Filipe was left alone against Doblas, but the Brazilian didn't knew how to defeat the keeper and his shot was blocked. Then it seemed like the local players became nervous. Deportivo started to enjoy of more possession over the ball, but the Galicians couldn't take advantage of the situation and score a goal.

Then the game changed once again, Betis started to push and they were near to score in two occasions. First it was Ed?? who sent out the ball after a good pass made by Sob?s, then Sob?s himself failed another opportunity, Alberto Rivera tried to send the ball to the box and his shot ended in the post, the Brazilian took the rebound, but he hit the post once again. The 0-0 was the result in the scoresheet at half-time, and Depor was lucky for it since Jabo's team failed this clear chances at the end of the period.

SECOND HALF
Caparr??s noticed that Barrag??n was facing a lot of troubles on the right side of the defense, for that reason he replaced the youngster with Manuel Pablo and the Canarian gave more security to the defensive line. But Betis continued to push for the victory and the most dangerous man continued to be Rafael Sob?s. The Brazilian enjoyed of a new clear occasion to score when he was putting pressure over Aouate. The Israeli keeper was trying to clear the ball, but he almost sent it to the back of his net thanks to Sobis' constancy .

Then  Deportivo responded with a magnificent play of Javier Arzimendi. Sergio stole the ball during an attack of Betis and he passed the ball to the Madrilian striker, then Arizmendi ran and eluded two rivals and saw that Doblas was out of place, he sent a 30-meters effort that gave the advantage to the Galicians. A great goal for the side that created less football at this point, but that awarded the sacrifice of the players.

Betis' men seemed devastated and they lost the control during the following minutes, then Irureta sent Robert to the pitch and Caparr??s ordered to defend the result, specially after Filipe was sent off, the Brazilian was standing in front of the ball when a home player was taking a free -kick, the ball hit him and the referee thought that it was intentional, for that reason he saw his second yellow card.

The expulsion gave hope to Irureta's team and the draw seemed near, but once again the post was the better allied of Deportivo. Alberto Rivera hit the wood one more time and Betis seemed defeated. Caparr??s sent Estoyanoff to the pitch, and the Uruguayan almost doubled the lead one minute after his entrance, he took the ball during a counterattack, but he failed to pass keeper Doblas. Sob?s was sent off eight minutes before the end and Betis lost their main asset upfront.

Caparr??s was enjoying of the victory, but a last-minute error changed the scenario. Lopo handled the ball inside the area and referee Daud?©n Ib???±ez indicated the penalty spot. Robert took advantage of the occasion and scored a goal that didn't calmed down the anger of the public who was singing "Lopera out!" during the last minutes of the match.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo lost a good occasion to reach a Champions League spot and they returned with only one point in the pocket. However the Galicians maintains the sixth position on the table. Betis is now in the relegation zone (4 pts) and it seems that Irureta will have to work extra-hours in order to correct the problems in his squad. The next liga encounter for Depor is at Riazor on Saturday, it will be an important match against Atl?©tico Madrid.
