Squad news

Another goalless game between Depor and Espanyol; the Galicians played better, but it only completed one shot on target. The team ends the matchday one point above relegation.

Víctor Fernández presented the expected squad for the game, a 4-2-3-1 figure with Fabricio Agosto covering the goal, Juanfran Moreno performed at the right side of the defence, Luisinho played at the left, Sidnei Rechel and Albert Lopo covered the central positions.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Lucas Pérez attacked from the right wing, Cavaleiro did it from the left, Luis Fariña was the playmaker and Oriol Riera was the centre forward.

At RCD Espanyol, Sergio was missing captain Sergio García and decided to switch into a 4-2-3-1 figure, with Salva Sevilla performing as a playmaker and Felipe Caicedo as the centre forward. Lucas Vázquez and Víctor Sánchez were the other references up front. The Riazor Blues decided to not attend to the game as a protest against the measures of la liga against them.

The game was interpreted as some kind of final for Deportivo, but the true is that the performance in the first part didn’t look like it. The local team had the ball possession at the beginning, but later lost it and the attacking line was flat. Espanyol had their chances mainly through the aerial game, but in the end there were only two shots on target in this part of the meeting.

The game started with Deportivo having the initiative and the ball, but there were no scoring chances within the first ten minutes, just a long ball searching for Lucas Vázquez that Sidnei intercepted (5’). The first approximation for Depor was a lateral free-kick that Oriol Riera headed over the crossbar (9’).

So, the picture of the game was very similar to the one of previous meetings: Depor having a goof presence at midfield and having the ball (65% of the possession by minute 15), but later the team didn’t have depth in attack. Espanyol were close to surprise Depor in a lateral free-kick, the play ended with a low shot by Cañas that Fabricio deflected though the ball was going out (12’).

With the passage of the minutes the situation changed, now Espanyol were having the ball and were approaching Depor’s area, mainly through the aerial game, like the play that ended with a disallowed goal to Caicedo for offside and that was preceded by a good save by Fabricio before Salva Sevilla (20’).

The first big opportunity for Depor came after an error by the Catalan defence. There was a bad clearance by the visiting defence after a volley from Álex, then the ball went into the path of Cavaleiro, but his low shot was blocked by visiting goalie Kilo Casilla (28’). One minute later Fariña appeared for the first time picking the ball at the edge of the area and his drilling shot missed the target.

Depor had a new chance with a crossed shot by Lucas Pérez that was saved by Casilla (32’), the action was responded with a counterattack for the visiting outfit that ended with Lucas Vázquez sending the ball over the crossbar.

Celso Borges suffered a knock at the middle of the half, he left the pitch for a couple of minutes and was about to be replaced by Juan Dominguez, but in the end the Central American midfielder recovered and returned to play.

Deportivo wasted this half before a calm rival that still created some scoring chances. The big problem for the Galicians is that the combination Fariña-Lucas only appeared in a frame of five minutes (25’ – 30’). In the rest of the half the team missed a leader as Cavaleiro was lost at the centre, while the full-backs weren’t joining the attacks like in previous meetings.

Depor played better this half, mainly within the first 35 minutes. There was a moment when the Galicians were passing over the Catalans, but the picture changed for the final ten minutes with Los Periquitos hitting the crossbar in the most dangerous play in this match.

Víctor Fernández warned before the game that he didn’t like the fact that the previous home meeting against Sevilla CF turned to be an exchange of blows before a rival with a bigger punch, and the game turned to be like that in the second part. Depor tried to attack and Espanyol were responding with quick counterattacks searching for the cracks at the local defence.

Depor had two consecutive opportunities; the first was a header of Riera after a cross by Luisinho, but his attempt missed the target (52’). One minute later Lucas Pérez led a counterattack and his drilling attempt passed close to the near post.

The locals were looking much better compared to the first half, but Víctor thought that his team needed more speed in attack. Diogo Salomão played for the first time in the league season and replaced Fariña, the move pulled Lucas Pérez to the playmaking function and the Portuguese performed on the left wing. Salomão added speed and skill to the left wing, he made a couple of interesting plays on his side, but his crosses didn’t find a proper receiver.

Depor were the best side in the second half and confirmed it with a new chance to score, a high volley by Salomão was collected by Oriol Riera when he was at the left corner of the box, he sent the ball off though it seemed that he was fouled before releasing the shot. This action should have been a penalty for Depor.

The locals were harassing the Catalan side and Cavaleiro had the biggest opportunity to score in the second part, he collected the ball when he was alone inside the area after a chipping ball by Salomão, but the Portuguese striker didn’t connect the ball properly and later Casilla made the save (75’).

Víctor made the other two substitutions and Toché and Juan Dominguez replaced Oriol Riera and Álex Bergantiños, but the side that dominated the game within the last ten minutes was Espanyol. At minute 81 they were close to score in a corner-kick that Javi López connected at the box, the ball hit the crossbar and then bounced at the goal line to later be cleared by Luisinho.

Espanyol pressed in the end with the entries of Mationi and Montañes, and the match ended with a direct free-kick of Arbilla that Fabricio saved (89’).

Wasted opportunity by Deportivo in order to put distance with relegation. The Galicians didn’t have consistency in attack, to the point that it only completed one shot on target. Once again Depor didn’t seize the scarce opportunities had in the match, mainly in the first 35 minutes on the second half.

Depor end the matchday one point above the relegation zone; now there’s a break in liga due to the national teams. The next liga meeting will take place on April 5 visiting Getafe CF (19h00 CET). Lopo will skip the game after picking a fifth yellow card in this match.
