REVIEW: GETAFE 2 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

06 Apr 2015
Another wasted opportunity to put distance with the relegation zone; horrible first part that was followed by several wasted chances in the second part. Cavaleiro and Lucas are both suspended for the next game.

BEFORE THE GAME
Víctor Fernández presented one of the 4-2-3-1 figures that he tested during Saturday’s training. The novelty was the presence of Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ the Madrilenian was making his fourth appearance in 2015 and his second as a starter (the previous one was at Real Madrid, February 14).

The presence of the ex-Fabril pushed Juanfran to the right wing, Fabricio Agosto was the starting keeper, Luisinho performed on the left side of the defence, the centre-backs were Pablo Insua and Sidnei Rechel.

Álex Bergantiños and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Luis Fariña performed on the left wing, Lucas Pérez was the playmaker and Oriol Riera was the centre forward. Cavaleiro was on the bench time for the first time since October.

At Getafe CF, coach Pablo Franco chose to play with Juan Rodríguez at midfield and with Pedro León on the right wing, leaving Diego Castro on the left flank. Álvaro Vázquez was the centre forward.

FIRST HALF
Disastrous first part by Deportivo; the team presented the same lack of ideas in attack, and this time the defence was a disaster, to the point that Getafe were having a comfortable two-goal lead by half-time despite not doing too much.

The game started with Getafe pushing up front and with Depor trying to move forward through the counterattack. This picture was going to be repeated throughout the first fifteen minutes. The Madrilenians were trying to have the ball, but weren’t creating any harm, while the Galicians only approached the rival’s area through two free-kicks after Oriol Riera was fouled when he was backwards and far from the goal.

Getafe’s first approximation came at minute 14, Juan Rodriguez stole the ball at midfield and his long cross was intercepted by Fabricio before it reached the path of Álvaro Vázquez. The game was turning to be boring and then the locals scored the first goal.

Pablo Insua conceded a corner-kick and in the resulting cross Vigaray headed the ball on target, the ball turned into a volley that should have been caught by Fabricio, but the Canarian keeper missed the ball before the pressure of Álvaro Vázquez and then Alexis Ruano just had to push the ball in from close range.

Depor lasted in reacting; their first opportunity in the game came at minute 24, Luisinho found the ball at the left side of the area and released a strong volley that passed close to the left post of local goalie Vicente Guaita. Three minutes later the visiting outfit completed its first shot on target, Juanfran released a lateral free-kick and Celso Borges headed the ball into the path of Guaita.

But Depor never reacted and Getafe, without doing too much, scored the second goal in a new error of the defence. Insua missed the ball at the left side of the area, Diego Castro made a short pass to Sarabia, who drilled the ball into the far post, the whole defence was misplaced, to the point that left-back Escudero arrived alone enough to score from close range.

Truly the offense was having a new flat presentation, with Lucas and Fariña disappeared, but the factor that was deciding the game was the poor defence. Depor suffered in each corner-kick and the experiment of putting Laure to block the moves of Diego Castro just made bigger the lagoons.

Getafe were feeling so comfortable that they could have reached the pause with a bigger advantage, but the shot of Pedro León after a corner-kick was deflected by Álex Bergantiños (40’), and later the low shot by Diego Castro was stopped by Fabricio (41’).

SECOND HALF
Deportivo improved in the final part as Getafe stepped down, but Riera wasted the best scoring opportunities. There was a small hope for the visiting team after Toché scored, but the team suffered a new loss.

Víctor Fernández made two changes since the start, Isaac Cuenca and Iván Cavaleiro replaced Juanfran and Fariña. The Portuguese started to attack from the left wing, while the Catalan did it from the right.

The entry of Cavaleiro gave more weight to the attack, but it wasn’t enough to start creating goal opportunities. However the picture changed as Getafe CF relaxed and stepped down allowing the Galicians to gain control of the game.

Depor’s first approximation came with a cross by Cavaleiro that Oriol Riera missed at the penalty spot (57’), in the next play Lucas wasted a good volley sending the ball over the crossbar.

At minute 64, Lucas attempted with a drilling shot from outside the area, and the ball went close to the near post, then Cavaleiro had to be replaced with a thigh injury. Toché entered for him and the draw was now a 4-4-2.

Depor had only scored two away goals in 2015 and it continued demonstrated its poor punch on the road in this game. At minute 66 the Galicians had a big chance to reduce the distance after Lucas drilled the ball into he area, Oriol Riera made a nice movement, but later his crossed shot missed the far post when Guaita was already defeated.

Four minutes later the Catalan attacker had a new chance, this time collecting a high cross by Lucas, and the header of the attacker went off. Depor, despite playing badly, had three chances to score within the first thirty minutes and it missed them all.

A ray of light appeared as Toché scored for Depor ending a drought of 268 minutes scoreless in liga. Cuenca made the solo-move on the left wing and his drilling cross went into the penalty spot, Toché anticipated two rivals and pushed the ball in. It’s the fourth goal in liga for the Murcian and his first in 2015. Depor pushed within the final ten minutes, but there were no more goal opportunities.

AFTER THE GAME
The flat defence led to see Getafe claiming a 2-0 advantage early in the game, later the Madrilenians relaxed and Depor had clear opportunities, even to win the game, but it only scored once through Toché. Depor wasted the first half and later it was too hurried in the second to get something positive from this game.

Deportivo extended their winless streak to seven games and remain out of relegation by one point. On Wednesday the Galicians host bottom place Córdoba CF (Riazor, 20h00 CET). Both Lucas Pérez and Cavaleiro will skip the game after picking the fifth yellow card on the season.
