PREVIEW: BARCELONA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

23 May 2015
There’s no tomorrow for Deportivo. The Galician outfit needs a positive result against the new champion if they don’t want to depend of others. Canella plays for the first time in 2015 and Víctor deploys a ‘trivote’.

STATISTICS: IMPOSSIBLE?
Deportivo travel to the Camp Nou knowing that they, at least, need a point from this game but, despite FC Barcelona are busier thinking of other things after securing the title, it won’t be an easy task for them. First to all to have in mind that the Catalans have won 26 of their 28 home matches in all competitions during this season.  They only lost twice in liga, both with a 0-1 score facing RC Celta and Málaga CF. Besides they haven’t conceded a goal within the last six home meetings, including big games against PSG (2-0) and Bayern Munich (3-0).

Later to point out that Deportivo only won three times at the Camp Nou after 42 league visits. The last victory visiting La Liga’s new champion took place on the season 2003/04: 0-2 with goals scored by Sergio & Luque (Oct 18, 2003). Curiously the current coaches of both teams, Luis Enrique and Víctor, were starters in that game.

Depor have ended scoreless in their last four visits to the Camp Nou, but there’s an interesting coincidence for the occasion: this is the third time in a matter of six years with the Galicians facing the Catalans at the end of a league season with the latter arriving to the game just after clinching the title, and in the previous two opportunities Deportivo got a point. For the last matchday of the season 2008/09 Barcelona arrived to the Riazor celebrating la liga in the last matchday and ended 1-1, then for the campaign 2010/11 Depor visited the Camp Nou and picked a goalless draw in the penultimate matchday, though it wasn’t enough to secure the permanence.

DEPORTIVO: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
The end of the way for Deportivo, there’s no tomorrow as the Galician club wants to avoid a third straight demotion at the elite of Spanish football. The countless failures throughout the league campaign is causing the need to add at least a point before the most dangerous team in the competition, a team that, despite been thinking of bigger goals, it’s playing at home and want to please their fans.

Víctor Sánchez is aware that his team will practically secure the permanence with a point and is ready to present a team characterized by the presence of a ‘trivote’ at midfield. The other novelty is the appearance of Roberto Canella on the left-back position, the Asturians hasn’t played any minute in 2015 and now shows up at the definitive moment due to the casualties at defence.

The rest of the defensive sector is the habitual one, with Fabricio Agosto covering the goal, Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ performs at the right side, while the central positons are for Albert Lopo and Sidnei Rechel.

The trivote in midfield is composed by Álex Bergantiños, Celso Borges and Juan Dominguez. Portuguese Diogo Salomão debuted as a starter on last weekend and left a good impression, now he’s repeating at the right wing, Iván Cavaleiro returns after been off for some weeks and attacks from the left flank, then Lucas Pérez performs as a centre forward.

Juanfran Moreno didn’t pass a late test and is out of the game due to a metacarpal fracture on his left hand. The other players at the injury room are Manuel Pablo and Cezary Wilk. Luisinho is suspended, while the players out for tactical reasons are Borja López, Luis Fariña and Isaac Cuenca. Despite releasing a roster with nineteen players, the club decided that the full squad is making the trip to Barcelona.

Salomão talked during the week and said that he feels motivated for this important clash, ”Everything has happened to me on this season: injuries, lack of opportunities… it hasn’t been my best season, but now I have the chance to fix the situation and compensate it. We are playing for everything and must fight in the game. Only a few teams add point there, but a point could be good and we must go out for it.”

Oriol Riera was warning Barca’s players that they should think of bigger goals and not of this game, ”For us it is the game of our lives. Barcelona must feel that we are playing for a lot of things and they are now playing for nothing, contrary to that they could lose things. They have more important games than Saturday’s one.”

List of picked players: (19): Fabricio, Lux (goalkeepers); Laure, Insua, Lopo, Sidnei, Canella (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Medunjanin, Borges, Lucas, José Rodríguez, Juan Dominguez, Hélder Costa, Salomão (midfielders); Cavaleiro, Toché, Postiga & Oriol Riera (attackers).

BARCELONA: SOLID YEAR
FC Barcelona could become into the first club in the history of European football that conquers two trebles. They clinched the liga title on last week and face finals in Copa Del Rey and the Champions League in the coming three weeks. After some doubts, and after spending several weeks as the runners-up, finally coach Luis Enrique found the right formula for his team and the results in 2015 have been remarkable confirming that this is a solid year for the Catalans

The possibility to achieve the treble and the farewell of marksman Xavi Hernández are the main topics in Catalonia on these days, so there are a lot of comments and speculations about the convenience of making rotations for this match.

And Luis Enrique will make changes, though in attack it’s expected that Lionel Messi and Luis Suaréz are going to play. It’s predicted a 4-3-3 figure, with third keeper Jordi Masip making his first appearance on the season.

The defense is completely full of novelties as Martín Montoya, who has only made eight appearances this season, performs at the right-back position, Adriano covers the left sector, while the central spots are for Marc Bartra and Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian is just making his first appearance in liga after been injured all season long.

At midfield Xavi will be main protagonist of the game after announcing his departure on Thursday. He will be joined by Sergi Roberto and Rafinha Alcántara, other two players that barely had minutes on this season.

In attack Pedro Rodríguez is taking the spot of Neymar, while the other attackers are Messi and Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan is without doubt the most in-form player in la liga after scoring eight goals and providing seven assists within the last ten official games of FC Barcelona.

List of picked players: To be released until Saturday.
