Once again the loaned players of Deportivo didn’t shine at their teams; the injuries, lack of experience and in some cases lack of attitude contributed to see them failing. This is the analysis in the performance of Saúl, Seoane and Bicho.

Six players of Deportivo played loaned at other clubs during the season that has just ended. It can be said that it was a bad year for all of them as they didn’t shine at their teams, something that has been constantly repeated in recent years, though in some cases the situation is acceptable as they were only searching for experience. Two of the loanees had to live a relegation.

This first part analyzes the performance of defenders Saúl García and Diego Seoane, plus midfielders Bicho. Precisely Bicho and Saúl suffered the relegation playing for their Segunda teams, while Seoane missed some continuity due to a knee injury.

Saúl García –Novice- (2,457 minutes at Segunda) Back in December it was a big surprise when Deportivo announced that it was paying €200,000 for a 20-year-old left-back that was playing his first season at Segunda División (the deal with Racing Santander included the option of leaving him there for six months). It cannot be said that it was a bad year for the Cantabrian as he was the 7th player with more minutes at Racing, but it neither can be said that it was a good year as they ended relegated to Segunda B.

He played in 36 of the 42 matches on the season and had ups and downs, some errors that cost goals and also a couple of assists, like the precise cross that allowed to score the first goal against RCD Mallorca (April 11, Racing won 2-3). Saúl can be described as a left-back with errors covering the position of left-back, but also has margin to improve and with an interesting disposition to join the attacks. The fact is that he seems “too green” for Primera and needs to continue growing. He has been picked for the pre-season, but a new loan seems more probable.

Diego Seoane –Redemption- (734 minutes at Segunda). The right-back, now 27, was living a nightmare at Deportivo. Víctor Fernández never counted with him and had to wait until the winter window in order to leave and search for minutes elsewhere. He found a spot at CD Lugo, club that was having big problems due to the injuries hitting the Segunda club, and the good news for him was that he did it performing as a right-back, his natural position.

It seemed that Seoane was going to get the regularly that he was waiting for after playing in the three first games after joining the Galician neighbor, but in the third game –home game against UD Las Palmas, February 8- he had to be replaced after suffering a knee injury.

He spent the following two months out and returned in the last stretch in order to help CD Lugo to clinch the permanence. Seoane played as a right-back in the six games between matchdays 35 and 40, his last game was visiting SD Ponferradina (May 23), match in which he was sent off with two yellow cards and didn’t play in the last two games. Maybe Seoane missed more minutes due to the injury, but at least his situation improved after been out of the plans in A Coruña. He has been picked by Víctor Sánchez to start the pre-season with Depor, his last chance to earn a spot at the squad as he only have one more year of contract.

Bicho –Disappointment- (528 minutes at Segunda). It was surprising when Depor announced that the young winger/playmaker was going to play loaned for two years at FC Barcelona B. The 19-year-old player was considered as one of gems at the club, but there was no room for him at the first team and, with the B squad staying at Tercera, the club considered as a good option to see him facing a new challenge at Segunda A.

In the end Bicho never settled in Catalonia. He played in the first nine games on the season, mainly as a centre midfielder, but later coach Eusebio Sacristán started to lose the confidence on him and, with the team having bad results, he never regained the confidence. Eusebio left the team in February and his replacement, Jordi Vinyals, only used him in four opportunities, always as a substitute. In the end 19 games at Segunda and no goals are his balance. The relegation of Barca B creates doubts about his future as he could return to A Coruña despite having one more year in his loan spell.
