REVIEW: RAYO VALLECANO 1 – DEPORTIVO 3 (LIGA)

15 Sep 2015
Marvelous game for Depor and first victory on the league season. The Galicians were superior to a rival with big lagoons at defence. Borges, Luis Alberto and Lucas scored the goals.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sánchez was presenting the same eleven men that played in the last game against Valencia CF, though the disposition was a 4-3-3 and not a 4-2-3-1. Miguel Cardoso was the player left out from the roster of 19 men picked for the trip to Madrid.

Lux was the keeper, Laure covered the right side in defence, Fernando Navarro played at the left, while the centre backs were Sidnei and Alejandro Arribas. Fayçal Fajr, Pedro Mosquera and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Juanfran attacked from the right wing, Luis Alberto did it from the left and Lucas Pérez was the centre forward.

At Rayo Vallecano, Paco Jémez left Bebé out of the game, instead Pablo Hernández was a starter on the right wing, with newcomer Javi Guerra also making his debut at the centre of the attack. Despite the game was played on a Monday's night, around 800 fans made the trip to Madrid in order to support Depor.

FIRST HALF
Solid first half by Deportivo; the game was equal, but the difference was the order of the Galicians before the errors by the Madrilenians and also the great performance of Luis Alberto, who completed three shots scoring once and providing an assist.

The game started with a solid pace, Depor were pressing up front and the first chance to score was for Rayo Vallecano. Pablo Hernández got the ball at the right corner of the area and his low and crossed shot was saved by Lux (2’). Three minutes later Depor had the first chance through a direct free-kick by Fajr that was cleared by the defence.

And Depor surprised with the first goal in a counterattack, the ball was passed to Luis Alberto, who released a precise cross from the left and into the box, Celso Borges was in the middle of two defenders and completed a curved header past local goalie Juan Carlos. It is his fourth goal in liga and the third scored at Estadio de Vallecas.

After the goal, Rayo claimed control of the actions and Depor assumed a more passive role, waiting at the back for a new counterattack. At minute 11, the locals scored after a play on the right wing, but it was ruled out as Javi Guerra was offside.

Rayo were pressing and having the ball possession, but later they weren’t finding the way to break Depor’s defence.  At minute 23, Adrian Embarba headed the ball over the crossbar during a corner-kick action.

Then Vallecas lived a crazy minute with two goals scored in a matter of fifty seconds, firstly Raúl Baena drilled the ball into the area, Ebert fooled Depor’s defence, in their solo error in the half, the defenders lost the marks allowing Embarba to face Lux one-on-one and he scored with a drilling shot. The advantage only lasted fifty seconds as Juanfran drilled the ball between two defenders, they failed to clear the ball properly and it went into the path of Luis Alberto, who scored with a low shot from the box.

With this goal Luis Alberto became into the first Deportivo’s player to both score and assist a goal in a La Liga game since Valerón did it in the visit to Levante UD in 2013. Luis Alberto was the most active man in attack and he had the next chance for Depor with a low shot that was blocked by Juan Carlos (32’). Lucas , meanwhile, was trying to make damage, but wasn’t as determinant as the loanee from Liverpool.

SECOND HALF
If the first part was more equal, Depor demonstrated that it was the best side on the pitch during the second half. The Galicians read the game properly and constantly pushed the cracks at the local defence, while the Madrilenians never found the way to break Deportivo’s defence.

The second part started with Fajr having a big chance to score, it was a corner-kick action that ended with the Moroccan firing a curved shot that was deflected and later saved by Juan Carlos (47’). Rayo continued to have the ball, but their long passes looking for the back of the defenders were constantly intercepted, in this way they never completed a shot on target in this half.

At minute 52, Lucas had his first chance to score with a chipping attempt from the edge of the area that went over the bar. If Luis Alberto was the most dangerous player for Depor in the first half, Lucas was the best in the second. And the Galician playmaker certified this picture scoring the third goal. Pedro Mosquera stole the ball and quickly assisted Lucas, who ran twenty meters to score with a drilling shot.

Then both coaches made the changes, Lass and Manucho entered for the locals, while Luisinho replaced Luis Alberto, but Depor continued to be the best team on the pitch. Lucas missed two chances in a matter of one minute (67’), first with a crossed shot that missed the target after a cross by Luisinho and later sending the ball over the bar in a new lack of attention by the local defence.

Depor had things under control and Víctor made the last two changes with Juan Dominguez replacing Juanfran and Lopo claiming the spot of Arribas. Rayo were desperate and were at the mercy of Deportivo, a team that should have scored more goals.

The Madrilenians continued insisting despite playing with ten men for the last fifteen minutes after German Ebert was sent off for protesting a call by the referee. But Depor was the side that continued having the best opportunities, at minute 82, Lucas had a new chance to score with a shot that was brilliantly saved by Juan Carlos, four minutes later the action was repeated, though the shooter was Juan Dominguez. And the game ended with a new long ball to Lucas that surprised again Rayo’s defence, but he missed the target from inside the area (90+2’).

AFTER THE GAME
Great game by a Deportivo that knew when, where and how to attack a weak defensive line that never counteracted the passing game of the Galicians. Luis Alberto was decisive in the first part, and Lucas was a dagger in the second.

The victory leaves Depor seventh at the standings, undefeated and more importantly leaving a great impression. On Sunday the Galicians return to the Riazor in order to face Sporting Gijón (16h00 CET).
