PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – ATHLETIC (LIGA)

18 Oct 2015
Depor fear the aerial game of the Basques, while Lux is recovered in time in order to be a starter. Athletic had a poor start, but want to change things after facing a difficult calendar within the first seven matchdays.

STATISTICS: GOOD NUMBERS AGAINST ATHLETIC
Athletic Club has only clinched seven victories after forty-three visits to the Riazor, and within the last six games played in A Coruña they lost five times, and the good mark goes beyond the Riazor, because Athletic has only managed to get one win over Depor within the last twelve league meetings. Their last success before the Galicians took place on the season 2009/10 playing at San Mamés (2-0).

The Basques are among the worst visiting teams in this start of season after only picking one point in three games: 2-0 at SD Eibar (matchday 02), 3-1 at Villarreal CF (matchday 04) and 0-0 at Real Sociedad (matchday 06); they only scored once in those meetings, only scoreless Malaga CF have a worst mark.

Neither the numbers of Depor at the Riazor are spectacular; the Galicians have only picked four points in three games and only represent the 13th best home team in the league. This match is the peña day of the season, which means special prices for the members.

And this event usually bring good luck to Depor; after all Los Blanquiazules have only lost one of the last ten peña games at Primera or Segunda. The last defeat was on the Primera campaign 2009/10 hosting Real Zaragoza (0-1).

DEPORTIVO: AERIAL WORRIES
Coach Víctor Sánchez said that he is not only worried for the aerial game of Athletic, but also for his combinative game. However during the trainings on this week he has insisted in avoiding the headers by the rival, after all five of the eight goals scored by Athletic on this season came through headers.

In this sense the coach seems preferring to play with Juanfran Moreno on the right wing, because he can help Laure, the smallest player at the squad. There were also worries with the condition of German Lux, who skipped the trainings for three consecutive days due to an adductor muscle problem.

On Saturday the Argentine goalie was saying that he is better after completing his first session on the week, ”I’m fine. I am better now and trained with normality. I am not forcing anything and have been testing as the days were passing. It was better to rest within the first days.” But Víctor still has doubts and for this reason he picked Fabril’s David Gómez, so the roster is composed by 19 men.

It’s predicted a 4-2-3-1 figure, with Lux covering the goal, Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ performing at the right side of the defense, Fernando Navarro plays on the left, while Alejandro Arribas and Sidnei Rechel cover the central positions.

Celso Borges and Pedro Mosquera are the centre midfielders, Juanfran performs on the right wing, Luis Alberto is switched into the left flank, Fayçal Fajr is the playmaker and Lucas Pérez is the centre forward.

Goalkeeper Fabricio Agosto is the only player staying at the injury room, striker Jonathan Rodríguez and centre midfielder Haris Medunjanin arrived late from international duty and are out of the roster. The other players out for tactical reasons are Luisinho, Manuel Pablo, Saúl Garcia, Jonás Gutiérrez and Miguel Cardoso.

Pedro Mosquera warned during the week that Athletic is a dangerous rival, ”Athletic have had a difficult calendar, they have faced Real Madrid and Barcelona and in a certain way it is normal to see them with only a few points. We always respect the rival and this respect will led us to be fully concentrated. Athletic have good players like Aduriz, who has always been a very important player and that lately is socring a lot of goals.”

List of picked players (19):  Lux, David Gómez, Manu (goalkeepers); Laure, Lopo, Sidnei, Arribas, Juanfran, Navarro (defenders); Juan Domínguez, Álex Bergantiños, Mosquera, Fayçal Fajr, Cani, Celso Borges, Cartabia (midfielders); Lucas Pérez, Luis Alberto & Oriol Riera (attackers)

ATHLETIC: A MIRAGE?
Athletic Club has been a roller-coaster of emotions in this start of season; after more than 30 years without tittles the Basques trashed FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, but later have left a poor impression among the fans in the first league matches, which was translated into poor results that are leaving the team closer to relegation than to Europe.

The Basque side lived a similar situation on last season and many analysts have been trying to clear out the clouds remembering that Athletic had the toughest calendar in this start of season; after all they already faced Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, plus a visit to Villarreal CF and the always demanding derby with Real Sociedad, all of this in only seven matchdays.

So, the media in the Basque Country sees the current positon at the standings as a mirage and believes that Athletic must take advantage of the upcoming calendar as the team faces more accessible rivals, and it all starts at the Riazor visiting Deportivo.

For the game at the Riazor it is predicted the same 4-2-3-1 figure that clinched the last 3-1 win over Valencia CF. Gorka Iraizoz is the starting goalie, Óscar De Marcos covers the right side of the defense, Mikel Balenziaga performs on the left, while the central positions are for Aymeric Laporte and Xabier Etxeita.

Mikel San José and Beñat Etxebarria perform at midfield, Markel Susaeta attacks from the right wing, 21-year-old Iñaki Williams does it from the left, star signing Raúl García is the playmaker and Aritz Aduriz is the centre forward. Despite the results in this start to the season Aduriz has showed a great form scoring four goals and providing one assist.

Defender Xabier Etxeita was saying during the week that what Athletic needs is to clinch an important away win, ”The feelings are good at the team, but maybe we are missing to achieve an important victory on the road, leaving a positive impression and playing well. That’s the goal. We have an important challenge at the Riazor, it seems that it has been hard for us to win there, but we travel hoping to add the three points and trying to develop a good game.”
