REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – ATHLETIC 2 (LIGA)

19 Oct 2015
Depor rescued a point in a game in which it missed everything and that was losing 0-2 by minute 80. Nothing was working until Lucas scored a great goal and the meeting ended with Deportivo even with the chance to grab the three points.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sanchez surprised leaving both Laure and Celso Borges on the bench. Cani was making his second appearance on the season, the first since the opening day facing Real Sociedad.  The draw was a 4-4-2 figure.

German Lux was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side of the defense, Fernando Navarro played on the left, Alejandro Arribas and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs, Juan Dominguez and Pedro Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Cani attacked from the left wing, Fayçal Fajr did it from the right, while Luis Alberto was playing behind Lucas Pérez up front.

At Athletic Club, coach Ernesto Valverde presented the expected 4-2-3-1 draw. Iñaki Williams, Markel Susaeta, Raúl García and Aritz Aduriz were the references in attack. The match was part of the Peña day of the season at Deportivo, so the attendance was pretty solid.

FIRST HALF
Poor half by Depor, just as it happened before Sporting Gijón, though this time there were no early goals. Still, the Basques scored and claimed the lead, Depor only reacted until the final ten minutes and Luis Alberto hit the woodwork twice.

The game started with Athletic pushing, releasing a couple of crosses and earning a corner-kick, Depor responded with a long play that ended with two crosses and a low shot by Luis Alberto that missed the target (5’).

Despite this opportunity, the locals didn’t feel comfortable on the pitch. The aerial game by Athletic caused a couple of mismatches at defence that luckily weren’t translated into goals, the main one a long pass from the defence that Lux barely cleared before Aduriz (12’).

This impression was extended for the next twenty minutes; Depor were imprecise with the passes and it seemed that it didn’t know how to attack a defensive line that was feeling comfortable. Neither Athletic was reaching the area of Lux, their long passes didn’t create any harm.

At minute 20, finally Depor found the way to complete a shot through Fajr, though it was deflected to corner-kick. Williams appeared for the first time in the game at minute 27, it was a long run at the centre that ended in nothing as his pass left Aduriz in offside position.

And then came the first goal, Luis Alberto lost the ball at the edge of Depor’s area and fell into the ground, and while the stadium and Depor’s team were protesting, Balenziaga seized the confusion to release an accurate cross from the left that Iñaki Williams sent into the back of the net with a shot that hit the ground first.

In the following minutes Athletic seemed closer to score the second before a Depor that was knocked down, but the Galicians reacted in the last ten minutes only to meet the post twice. The first big chance to tie the game came at minute 36. Lucas made the play on the left, Juan Domínguez connected the ball near the box and Luis Alberto sent a strong crossed shot that incredibly hit the post and went out.

Six minutes later Cani released a powerful shot from the left corner of the area, Iraizoz made the save, then the ball went into the path of Luis Alberto, who released a new strong shot that hit the crossbar and went out. Two posts in six minutes and Depor went to the pause with a 0-1 loss.

SECOND HALF
Depor came from the death to rescue a point, in its worst game on the season and when everything seemed lost, Cartabia came into the field, Lucas scored a great goal and a short hurricane was released, enough to rescue a point and that was close to leave the three points in A Coruña.

Depor tried to attack since the kick-off, but it was mentally off from the game. The continuous bad passes reduced the offensive game within the first fifteen minutes to only one wide shot by Juan Dominguez that missed the target (51’)

The presence of Juan Dominguez was protested by the public, he looked off the pitch and the stats demonstrated it: in the first half he only touched the ball ten times and Víctor didn’t last in replacing him with Celso Borges, later Oriol Riera entered for Cani. But the picture didn’t change and Athletic seized a new error to score the second goal.

Lucas lost the ball when he was trying to pass the ball at midfield and when the locals were trying to release a counterattack, Laporte ran 20 meters and Raúl Garcia ended drilling the ball into the area and Aritz Aduriz waited until the last second before chipping before Lux and when he was marked by Sidnei and Navarro.

Depor were a broken team and Athletic were looking closer to the third goal, Víctor made the third substitution and Fede Cartabia replaced Luis Alberto. This time the change worked as the Argentine added spark. In only one minute he earned a corner-kick and had a chance to score, the Argentine was close to open the door at minute 71 with a low shot that hit the net by the outside.

Ten minutes were left and it was clear that Depor were going to lose for the second time at the Riazor, but then there was a quick reaction, just like it happened in the first half against Sporting, and it all started with the goal scored by Lucas Pérez.

The play was born on the right wing, Juanfran attempted a drilling shot that only met Lucas Pérez on the way, and the attacker reacted turning off and firing a strong shot that Iraizoz couldn’t deflect.

At that point Athletic’s players were already exhausted and their solo response was to lock themselves at the back. The equalizer was close to arrive one minute later but neither Sidnei, nor Lucas, nor Riera were able to push the ball in when they were at the box.

But the equalizer came after all in a new play on the right wing, Juanfran assisted Cartabia inside the box and the short cross from the Argentine player was headed by Arribas, the ball later hit De Marcos and fooled Iraizoz to end at the back of the net. There was even time to search for the victory, but in the last ball of the night Arribas headed out the free-kick by Cartabia (90+3')

AFTER THE GAME
Definitely there’s some magic surrounding Deportivo on this season. In the worst game in the tournament the team was losing 0-2 at minute 80 and it ended getting something positive. It could be considered a miracle, but Depor didn’t deserve to lose this game, no matter the poor game displayed in the 35 first minutes of both halves, firstly for having more chances than a rival that was ordered, but that never was better than Deportivo, and secondly for the spirit shown by the players. Cartabia entered the pitch and encouraged a team that saw the light with the great goal by Lucas.

Depor remain in Europe thanks to this point, sixth with thirteen points tied with SD Eibar. On Saturday, the Galician team travels to Andalusia in order to face Malaga CF (La Rosaleda, 21h05 CET).
