REVIEW: MALAGA 2 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

25 Oct 2015
A new poor version of Deportivo suffered the second defeat on the season, this time the team didn’t react after allowing two goals. The Galician outfit only completed two shots on target in the match, one of them hit the post.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sánchez presented a lineup that curiously was the same team that ended the match against Athletic Club. The main surprise in the 4-4-2 draw was to see Luis Alberto on the bench, while Fede Cartabia was a starter.

German Lux covered the goal, Juanfran Moreno performed at the right side of the defence, Fernando Navarro played at the left, Sidnei Rechel and Alejandro Arribas covered the central positions. Pedro Mosquera and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Fayçal Fajr did it from the left and Lucas Pérez joined Oriol Riera in attack.

At Málaga, coach Javi Gracia kept the 4-2-3-1 after all, with Charles as the main reference in attack. Sergio Paulo Barbosa ‘Duda’ was a starter attacking from the right wing, while Juan Carlos Pérez was doing it from the left.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo had a slow start in the half, facing big problems before a rival that was better planted; later the team improved led by Cartabia, but the first part ended scoreless as Riera missed some luck in the best opportunity to score.

The game started as it started the past meeting with Athletic: Depor didn’t feel comfortable on the pitch, while the rival was better and was having the ball possession. This time Málaga were more aggressive and had a couple of chances through set-pieces, though their best opportunity was a short-range shot by Juan Carlos that was blocked by Lux (6’).

Meanwhile, Depor were having problems in the output of the ball, Mosquera was early booked and was close to lose the ball after a bad pass by Lux. The Andalusians were more dangerous in this part of the meeting and were close to score at minute 15 during a counterattack, but Adnane Tighadouini didn’t connect the ball properly and Deportivo’s goalie made an easy save.

By the middle of the half Depor were missing more ball possession, no one was controlling the traffic of the ball and therefore the team ended attempting long passes that were easy for the local defence. The first shot on target for the Galicians came at minute 24, it was a direct free-kick by Cartabia that was stopped by Kameni.

After this opportunity Deportivo started to improve, with Cartabia leading the team on the right wing. The visiting team had two scoring opportunities, the main one was a counterattack that ended with Riera attempting a curved shot after eluding a rival at the edge of the area, the ball hit the far post and went back passing between the goal line and Kameni (29’). Two minutes later Lucas fired a drilling shot from the left corner and he missed the target.

Then Málaga pressed, Boka and Tighadouini were making attractive plays on the wings, but later their crosses were poor. Riera had a new chance as he headed the ball at the penalty spot after a good cross by Navarro, but he missed the target though he was offside (43’).

SECOND HALF
There was the hope that the Deportivo saw at the end of the first part was going to show in the second, but it turned to be the worst half by Depor in the season. The visiting team never knew what to do, neither when the score was still 0-0 nor when the locals claimed the lead.

The start of the second part was equal, Málaga were trying to attack, but they missed quality to create a clear scoring opportunity. The Galicians were now having more pause at midfield, and therefore had a batter ball possession, but later they missed aim and ideas, Cartabia was now disappeared and neither Lucas nor Fajr claimed a starting role.

Málaga, meanwhile, were only creating problems with their counterattacks, mainly focused on the left wing. One of the crosses from this sector ended with Tighadouini heading the ball out when he was alone inside the area (51’).

Then Víctor made a double substitution with Laure and Luis Alberto replacing Cartabia and Riera. A lot was expected from Luis Alberto, but in the end it was Laure who was more active on the right side, though always with poor crosses that never meant a scoring opportunity.

And suddenly Málaga CF scored, it was only the second game on this season in which they have found the net. It was a lateral free-kick with Adnane Tighadouini firing a low shot that passed between all the players inside the area, Lux reacted late and the ball ended at the back of the net.

Depor were now hurried, but continued to miss ideas in attack. It was a soulless team that tried, but that surrendered as soon as they realized that this wasn’t their night. Cani was the last substitution as he replaced Juanfran, but it didn’t change the picture.

Ten minutes were left and the hope was to witness a surprising reaction as it happened before Sporting and Athletic, but the only thing that arrived was the second goal for the Andalusians, which killed the game. It was a cross from the left that was cleared by the defence, but later Cani and Laure reacted late to pick up the rebound and Juan Carlos arrived before to pick up the ball and fire a low shot from the left corner of the area past Lux. Depor had a couple of approximations in the stoppage time, but ended without completing a shot on target during this half.

AFTER THE GAME
A new poor game for Deportivo, this time without a late reaction to hide the performance of a team that missed ideas and later a strategy to modify the situation. The changes didn’t work before a Málaga that only did little things to clinch an important victory.

This is the second defeat for Deportivo on this season, the Galicians are going out of the European zone though they remain far from relegation. On Friday, Los Blanquiazules return to the Riazor in order to face Atlético Madrid (20h30 CET).
