NOTES FROM THE GAME AGAINST MÁLAGA

26 Oct 2015
The second defeat on this season brought negative issues related to the performance of the team. From the doubts at the right side of the defense and with Lux, to the curse of Oriol Riera before the goal.

Coach Víctor Sánchez needs to polish things before it becomes a major problem for Deportivo. The Galician outfit played a bad game for the second straight opportunity, it continues to be solid at defence, but Lux is leaving the impression that each shot has big chances of ending in a goal, while Oriol Riera continues to hit the posts. There are also doubts with the system and with who should perform at the right side of the defence.

1- The latest performance: The players and the coach have referred to this game as the worst game of Depor on this season, but the performance was very similar to the one witnessed against Athletic Club, the only difference was the late reaction at the Riazor that allowed to pick up a point. So, Depor has had a discrete performance within the last two matches, just when the team has been constantly praised for lying inside the European zone.

2- The effectiveness of the 4-4-2: There are big doubts about the convenience of the 4-4-2, the draw used lately by Víctor Sánchez. The idea is to have an alternation at the centre of the attack, but Depor are looking like a thick team in offense when the rival puts pressure at midfield, which forces the players to rely in long throws and plays on the wings that end with inaccurate crosses. The coach should focus in a way to unclog the team when it faces this situation before focusing in the definition of the plays.

3- The curse continues: Oriol Riera continues to live a nightmare. Despite Depor played a bad game, he had a clear chance to claim the lead that would have changed the situation as the score was still 0-0. It’s hard to blame him as he did everything right, but the ball hit the post and luckily for Málaga it went out later without touching Kameni (it would have ended in goal if the ball touches the keeper). Not even the fact of been playing in a “friendly” stadium helped the Catalan attacker (2 goals in his 2 previous visits).

4- Doubts with Lux: After a good start for the Argentine goalie, lately there are doubts with his performance. Within the last three games Depor have only allowed seven shots on target, however the team conceded five goals, which means that Lux has only made two saves. It’s hard to only blame the keeper, but he left the impression that he could have done better in some goals, like the first against Athletic Club and the first against Málaga CF, so the impression is that a shot on target conceded has big chances of turning to be a goal allowed.

5- Cartabia’s performance: Little things can be rescued from the game, especially in attack, but the performance of Fede Cartabia should be taking into account. The Argentine had good performances entering as a substitute and now he made a good job as a starter. Performing on the right wing he had a solid first half, creating a goal opportunity and completing three of five of the shots made in this part of the game. In the second half he disappeared and ended replaced by Laure.

6- The right side of the defense: Big doubt in this position. Juanfran has been a starter within the last two games, but the true is that he didn’t convince with his performance. In the second half of this game he had big problems facing both Boka and Tighadouini. Víctor noticed it and sent Laure into the pitch in order to help him and later was replaced with Cani.
