REVIEW: LEVANTE 1 - DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

08 Nov 2015
Depor could only rescue a point from a game that seemed under control in the first part. After failing a lot of passes, the defence had big problems in the second part and Lucas continues to score.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sánchez allowed Jonás Gutiérrez to stay at the starting formation, though this time in his natural position of left winger. The rest was the predicted 4-2-3-1 lineup. German Lux was the starting goalie, Laure performed at the right side of the defence, David Navarro performed at the left, while the central positions were for Sidnei Rechel and Alejandro Arribas.

Celso Borges and Pedro Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Jonás did it from the left, Fayçal Fajr was the playmaker and Lucas Pérez the centre forward.

At Levante UD, coach Rubi was directing his first game at the Ciutat de Valencia and presented the expected 4-1-4-1 draw, the only novelty was to see Colombian Jefferson Lerma performing at midfield leaving Verza on the bench. Roger Marti was the selected choice for the centre of the attack.

FIRST HALF
A solid Depor in defence and effective in attack was able to claim the lead in the game. The Galicians could have gained a bigger lead, but their passing game failed and allowed Levante to have a couple of chances to tie the score.

The game started with Levante dominating the actions, within the first five minutes they had a lateral free-kick and a corner-kick that didn’t bring problems to Depor’s defence. The visiting side reacted with a counterattack that ended with a shot by Cartabia that missed the target (4’).

That was going to be the picture in the following minutes: low pace with Levante trying to have the initiative and with Depor waiting to find a counterattack. But since minute 15, Depor started to have the best chances to score, one of them was a cross by Cartabia that was cleared by local goalie Rubén Martínez and in the resulting corner-kick Sidnei hit the post with a header at the near post (16').

And then Deportivo scored the first goal in the match. A big error by David Navarro, when the locals were attacking, allowed Depor to regain the ball, then Jonás Gutiérrez made a long and perfect pass that left Lucas Pérez alone enough to run ten meters and beat Rubén with a low shot. It’s his seventh goal on the season.

Levante lasted in reacting and had two chances at minute 30, first Rubén Garcia attempted a curved shot from the left wing that was slightly deflected by Arribas, in the resulting corner-kick Lerma sent the ball over the crossbar after surpassing his mark at the far post.

The Galicians had things under control, but their passing game was ruining their good first part. Their pass ratio in the first part was only 60% and a big example of the situation was Jonás Gutiérrez, who was among the best players at the team, with a solid participation defending and attacking on the left side, not only assisting, but also making a key interception, but with only a passing ratio of 35% in this half.

Depor were still creating some danger, this time it was after a free-kick that was deflected by the defence, the ball reached the path of Mosquera, whose shot hit a rival and was later blocked by Rubén Martínez (33’).

The Valencians had a last chance to score in the first part, Lerma sent a low shot from the left, Roger, in his lonely intervention in the half, found the ball inside the box, it was hard for him to connect the ball and his crossed attempt passed close to the post (45’).

SECOND HALF
Depor were overwhelmed at the start of the second part, the locals didn’t need too much to tie the game and could have even won. Later Depor had more opportunities as Lucas and Pedro Mosquera had chances to score within the final minutes.

Levante started strongly in the second part, to the point that they scored an early equalizer. At minute 50 David Navarro missed the target with a header in a corner-kick action, then Lux made a bad clearance in the goal kick, the counterattack ended with Borges booked for committing a foul at the edge of the area and, in the resulting shot, Víctor Camarasa drilled the ball within the wall, Lux didn’t react properly and the ball ended at the back of the net.

Just three minutes later Morales was close to score for the locals with a strong shot from inside the area after collecting a cross from the left, and this time Lux made a big save clearing the ball to corner-kick. After a calm first half, Depor were now at the edge of defeat.

So, Víctor ordered the changes as Juanfran and Oriol Riera replaced Cartabia and Jonás. The players going out were already vanished from the game, but neither the replacements had a direct impact in attack. With the move Lucas Pérez was relocated on the left wing. And it was the Galician attacker the only one that was going to create almost all the chances for his team

The first opportunity for Depor in this half came until minute 62, it was a direct free-kick by Lucas that was blocked by Rubén Martínez.  At minute 76, Levante had a new chance through a free-kick, again Camarasa attempted a low shot by the centre, but this time Lux blocked the ball.

Depor had a big chance at minute 81, Lucas got the ball after a play by Sidnei, but the ball was cleared to corner-kick after the save made by Rubén Martínez. Again the top-scorer of the team was the only one creating danger as Riera was too alone at the centre and Fajr was disappeared.

The last substitution for Depor was the entry of Cani replacing Laure, move that pulled Juanfran to defense. The last opportunity in the game was for Depor. Pedro Mosquera collected a clearance at the edge of the area to end releasing a shot that Rubén Martínez cleared to corner-kick (90+2’).

AFTER THE GAME
Bittersweet game after a new draw for Depor. The Galicians have only lost twice on this season, but left the idea that they dropped two points. Víctor’s men claimed the lead and were close to extend the lead in the first part, but in the second they lost the control and were close to lose. In the end a tasteless point and a Lucas on fire as he has now scored 7 goals in 11 games.

Deportivo will end the matchday out of Europe and now the international break arrives. The next matchday is special as Los Blanquiazules face the Galician derby hosting RC Celta at the Riazor (November 21, 21h05 CET).
