PREVIEW: MIRANDÉS – DEPORTIVO (COPA)

06 Jan 2016
Depor make rotations but keep playing with a 4-4-2 system, Mirandés are the best scorer at Segunda and represent a solid block that has kept the good performances no matter who is playing.

STATISTICS: THE BEST SCORER AT SEGUNDA
CD Mirandés is one of the several surprises in the current Segunda tournament. And it’s that Los Rojillos are characterized by the fact of been the best scorer at Liga Adelante (29 goals in 19 matches), reason why they are currently fighting for the promotion seats. Their latest win visiting Córdoba CF (1-2) left them 7th at the standings, just two points behind sixth place Gimnástic Tarragona.

Deportivo are also having a positive start in terms of scoring goals, because the Galicians have netted 26 goals after 18 Primera matchdays, that’s the fifth best mark in la liga only below Real Madrid (47), FC Barcelona (40), RC Celta (28) and Athletic Club (27).

This is the first meeting in Copa Del Rey facing CD Mirandés and the first presence of Depor in the last 16-round since the campaign 2010/11. At the time Los Blanquiazules eliminated Córdoba CF (agg- 4-2) and advanced to quarterfinals, round in which they fell before Oltra’s UD Almeria.

DEPORTIVO: EMBRACING THE 4-4-2
After a brief use of the 4-2-3-1 at the beginning of the season, coach Victor Sánchez switched into the 4-4-2 scheme, to the point that in 11 of the 20 official games played so far the team has used this scheme, including the last seven in liga. Now he is ready to use this scheme for the first time in Copa, a competition that will continue to witness rotations as the starting eleven is completely different to the one that played in liga against Villarreal CF.

Manu Fernández will be defending the goal; Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ covers the right side in defence, Manuel Pablo will play for the second time on the season as a starter performing on the left, the centre-backs are Albert Lopo and Fabril’s Róber Pier.

Haris Medunjanin returns and performs alongside Juan Dominguez at midfield, Jonás Gutiérrez is the right winger, Luisinho attacks from the left, while Jonathan Rodriguez and Oriol Riera are the centre-backs.

Despite the 4-4-2 is now the main scheme used by Víctor, this is only the first opportunity in which Jonathan and Oriol Riera are starters at the same time; actually it will be the first time in which they are at the same time on the pitch. Previously, in the best of the cases, one of them replaced the other during a couple of opportunities, but never coincided on the pitch.

Stipe Pletikosa wasn’t picked for the game as his transfer hasn’t arrived yet, so David Gómez from Fabril was picked for the match. Several of the normal starters in liga have been rested, like the cases of Lucas Pérez, Luis Alberto, Fernando Navarro or Fede Cartabia. The players at the injury room are Celso Borges, Cani and Fabricio. Alejandro Arribas is also out for precaution after the hit suffered in liga.

Róber was commenting his feelings after debuting in Copa and previewed the match, “I played the first two games in Copa and I’m ready to play if the coach decides it. I’m feeling fine and comfortable playing with the first team. We will try to bring the best possible result to the Riazor. We aren’t confident, but prepared, because we know that these games are difficult. Mirandés practice a direct game and it will be tough. We want to remain in the competition and reach the farthest round.”

List of picked players (19): Manu, Lux, David Gómez (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Laure, Sidnei, Lopo, Róber (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez, Mosquera, Fayçal Fajr, Medunjanin, Jonás Gutiérrez, Luisinho, Cardoso (midfielders); Oriol Riera, Jonathan Rodríguez & Luis Alberto (attackers).

MIRANDÉS: A BLOCK THAT SCORES GOALS
Despite been the best scorer at Segunda División, CD Mirandés don’t have a “star” with a baggage of goals, actually it is the opposite case. Because no one from the team is among the top five-scorers in the league and instead it is the Segunda squad with more scorers (10 of the 21 players have netted at least one goal).

It demonstrates the kind of team that CD Mirandés is: a mix between veterans and some young players in which no one shines but that offers a very similar performance no matter who is playing. The current top-scorer is Ivorian Lago Junio, who has netted seven goals so far.

So, it isn’t strange that coach Carlos Terrazas is making rotations at the lineup; in the end it is expected that he will only keep four starters from the 3-4-3 lineup that surprised Córdoba CF during the weekend (1-2). The 3-4-3 figure can also be understands as a 5-4-1 as the full-backs have freedom to join the attacks.

Raúl Fernández is the starting keeper, the trio of centre-backs is composed by Ernesto Galán, Mickael Gaffoor and Álex Ortíz, the latter is available as his suspension only applies in liga (he was sent off during the weekend with two yellow cards).

Carlos Moreno and Javier Cantero covers the sides at midfield with Carlos Lázaro and Daniel Provencio performing at the centre. Marco Sangalli plays at the right side, Álex García performs on the left, while Abdón Prats is the entre forward.

During the week Carlos Moreno was explaining the expectations of the team for the game,”People are hooked to the Copa. The Copa is something that people in Miranda likes and it is a game in which we will surely do the right things and will match the expectations. Surely it is a Primera team, we know it will be difficult, but we already demonstrated against Málaga that we have enough team to complete against anyone.”

List of picked players: It will be released until Wednesday.
