MATCHDAY 22: CLEARING THE WAY

04 Feb 2016
FC Barcelona gave an important step forward to secure the title. Celta and Eibar fell, while Sevilla and Athletic advance. The last places had a negative weekend.

The big game between the first two places cleared the way to FC Barcelona in the race for the title. The Catalans defeated Atlético Madrid (2-1) and now they have a three-point gap plus a pending game with Sporting Gijón. Real Madrid seized the opportunity to approach the leaders after an easy 6-0 win over RCD Espanyol.

Villarreal CF remain in great form and, despite facing some opposition hosting Granada CF, they clinched a 1-0 win. It means they have picked 14 of the last 18 points in dispute and secure the fourth spot.  Other two teams in a great moment are Sevilla CF and Athletic Club.

The Andalusians beat Levante UD (3-1), their four win within the last six games, and are now fifth, while the Basques beat Getafe CF on the road (0-1) and are now sixth as this was their second straight win. In the meantime, RC Celta and SD Eibar are falling after suffering a second straight loss.

The Galicians were defeated visiting UD Las Palmas (2-1) and the Basques lost at home before ascending Málaga CF (1-2). Then a winless Deportivo in 2016 dropped again two points, this time hosting Rayo Vallecano (2-2). Despite the disappointment Los Blanquiazules haver a ten-point difference with relegation and can even aspire to Europe as they are only four points under the sixth place.
