REVIEW: GIMNASTIC 0 - DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

11 Nov 2006
312. That's the number of minutes that Deportivo has spent without scoring a goal as visitor playing in a official competition. It other words, three and a half games without goals. But this time Depor was solid in defence and the effort done was useful to achieve a scoreless draw. However, the Galician team continues to live outside of the European positions.

BEFORE THE GAME
As it was announced, coach Caparr??s sent Adri??n L??pez from the beginning, the youngster was debuting as starter in la liga. The rest of the squad was the same one that drew with Barcelona on the previous weekend, including the presence of Juanma and Lopo as central defenders and the appearance of Arbeloa as right back. In N??stic coach Luis C?©sar was conditioned by the injuries and suspensions, Javier Portillo was the lonely striker for this game.

FIRST HALF
Gimn??stic started controlling the actions while Deportivo was putting pressure in midfield. However, the first occasion to score was for the Galicians with an effort from Cristian (11'). But the home team continued to dominate the match, and Juan D?az enjoyed the first opportunity for his team with a ball that was contained by Aouate.

The Israeli keeper was concentrated in the game and minutes later he stopped a new effort from Juan D?az, this time after a free-kick. Later Mingo headed out a corner-kick and N??stic seemed near to score the first goal of the evening. In Deportivo, Arizmendi was the more dangerous man in the attack zone, and the Madrilian was near to scoring with a nice shot that keeper Rub?©n P?©rez contained.

During the last minutes of the first period N??stic increased the pressure, and they searched the goal with more will. Their main resource was to attack from the sides. Once again the work of Juan D?az and Generelo created a lot of troubles to Deportivo. But at the end, the Galician defenders knew how to handle the situation.

SECOND HALF
Adri??n L??pez showed some nice moves like a brilliant combination that he made with Verd?? during the first half, but the truth was that Depor was almost inexistent in the attacking zone. Coach Caparr??s tried to improve the situation and he replaced Adri??n with Riki at half-time.

But the game followed the same script: N??stic dominated the ball and Deportivo was speculating with counterattacks. During the first minutes of the second period, Javier Portillo enjoyed the best opportunity for the home side. The Madrilian headed a cross from the left, but Aouate was there to deflect the ball. Once again the occasion was generated thanks to Juan D?az.

And Caparr??s reacted sending his 'revulsive' to the pitch: Fabi??n Estoyanoff. Like it happened against Barcelona, the Uruguayan shined with his personal plays on the left wing, one of those occasions ended in the most dangerous action for Deportivo. Estoyanoff ran on the left and his cross was headed on goal by Arizmendi, but keeper Rub?©n P?©rez deflected the ball into a corner-kick.

In the following minutes Deportivo seemed to be near to the goal, Estoyanoff continued with his personal show on the left side and he sent new crosses to the box, but Arizmendi and Riki weren't able to reach the ball. During the final minutes the situation changed once again and N??stic pushed for the victory.

The home side had two clear occasions during this part of the match, but they failed to score. First it was a cross from the left that ended in a series of rebounds and with Mingo heading the ball out. Later Paraguayan defender C??ceres headed a ball in the area and Portillo failed to connect it when he was in front of Aouate.

AFTER THE GAME
Deportivo hasn't been able to win an away game this liga season after five intents (Mallorca, Levante, Betis, Getafe, N??stic), and the Galicians have been only able to achieve one goal in those encounters. In fact, Depor accumulates 312 minutes without scoring a goal away from the Riazor, a count that includes the past copa match with Racing Santander.

Right now Depor occupies the eight position with 16 points. At least Europe is near since the sixth position is only two points away (Valencia with 18 points). Also, the point hasn't solved the problems of N??stic and the Catalans continues to live in the relegation zone (19th with 5 points).
