MATCHDAY 23: NOT SO EASY

09 Feb 2016
The big teams suffered a lot in order to get the three points during matchday 23; Eibar , Getafe Valencia and Espanyol extended their negative streaks, while Rayo Vallecano pulled Las Palmas into the pit.

There’s the sense that the Spanish league is a matter of three clubs trashing the rest, but that view only reflects part of the reality, because the big ones also suffer playing against the humble teams and this matchday was a demonstration of it.

The two giants were visiting teams in relegation and they barely got the three points; FC Barcelona only secured the win until the final minute and, with a goal of Luis Suárez, defeated Levante UD (0-2). A few hours later Real Madrid needed a screamer from Luka Modrić in order to defeat Granada CF (1-2).

Atlético Madrid also suffered hosting SD Eibar, they were losing 0-1 by minute 55, but pulled three goals in the second part, including Fernando Torres’ 100th goal with the club, to end winning 3-1. SD Eibar are doing a sensational season, but this was their third straight loss, which recalls their fall on last campaign.

The other clubs fighting for Europe played against each other and the games ended in draws. Athletic Club was hosting Villarreal CF and in what was supped to be an attractive game, but it ended to be the only goalless match of the weekend, then Sevilla CF had to play with one less player for 65 minutes, but managed to grab a point visiting RC Celta (1-1).

The Galicians are living their worst moment on the season with only one victory within the last six matchdays, period in which they lost four times. Their neighbors, Deportivo, are also living a poor moment as they drew again in liga, this time visiting Sporting Gijón (1-1). Los Blanquiazules are only four points under the European zone, but remain winless in 2016.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Barcelona 54 56 17
2 Atlético 51 34 11
3 Real Madrid 50 66 21

5 Sevilla 37 32 24
6 Athletic 35 33 30
7 Celta 35 34 36
8 Eibar 33 36 31

There were movers and shakers at the middle of the standings, Málaga CF trashed Getafe CF (3-0) and chained a second straight win that puts the Andalusians closer to Europe after been in relegation in December, while for the Madrilenians it meant a third straight loss that leaves them closer to the pit.

Real Betis conquered their first win in 2016 defeating Valencia CF (1-0), Los Ches are living a nightmare as they have now spent 12 straight matchdays without winning and were humiliated in midweek in Copa. They are now only four points above relegation.

Rayo Vallecano beat UD Las Palmas at home (2-0) and it’s a very important result as the Madrilenians are out of relegation, while the Canarians return there after spending one week out. The matchday was closed with the heavy loss of RCD Espanyol hosting Real Sociedad (0-5). The Catalans are another club in a poor form with six losses within the last six games, they are now only one point above the pit.
