MATCHDAY 30: LATE GOALS & COMEBACKS

22 Mar 2016
Exciting matchday with late goals changing the sign of six matches, the top two teams were unable to win despite having an advantage, while Depor achieved a refreshing victory in the quest for the permanence.

Probably the most exciting matchday on this season due to the surprises in the score, because six of the ten games had goals at minute 80 or later that changed the final outcome, at the same time both leaders were unable to win after having the advantage and conceding two unexpected goals.

FC Barcelona had a two-goal advantage visiting Villarreal CF, but the Valencians showed courage and grabbed a point thanks to the goals of Bakambu and an own goal by Mathieu (2-2). More surprising was the game of Atlético Madrid, Los Colchoneros were winning 0-1 at Sporting Gijón and Simeone started to make changes, and within the last five minutes the Asturians surprised everyone with two goals to grab a big victory (2-1).

Real Madrid took advantage of the situation and clinched a 4-0 win over Sevilla CF. It was the biggest score in the weekend, but neither was an easy game as three of the goals came in the second part with a very doubtful call that disallowed the equalizer to the Andalusians early in that half.

The biggest winner at the top of the standings was RC Celta, the Galicians clinched a 0-2 win visiting Valencia and are now fifth, both goals were scored after minute 80. Athletic Club was another top team surprised by a quick comeback, they were defeating RCD Espanyol on the road, but two goals in three minutes changed the tide and the Catalans grabbed three important points (2-1).

The situation at the top of the standings:

6 Sevilla 48 43 35
7 Athletic 47 48 39
8 Malaga 39 29 28

Deportivo were also caught by the “vogue” of the late goals, the Galicians were tying with Levante UD, but a late goal allowed them to add their first victory in 2016 (2-1). Los Blanquiazules are now eight points above demotion with eight games to go.

Borja Bastón also scored a late goal that gave SD Eibar a point visiting Getafe CF (1-1), the Madrilenians dropped two points and remain in relegation, but only for the goal difference rule as they are tied with Granada CF and Rayo Vallecano, this two sides starred a 2-2 draw with the Madrilenians coming back twice to pick up a valuable point.

UD Las Palmas continue to grow and clinched a third straight victory on the road beating in-form Real Sociedad (0-1). Finally, Real Betis lost at home again, and as it happened throughout the matchday it was thanks to a late goal by Málaga CF (0-1). Despite its big win, Sporting Gijón remain in the drop zone.
