PREVIEW: CELTA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

02 Apr 2016
Derby at Balaidos with both Depor and Celta in the final part of their particular race to secure their goals for the season. Sidnei returns at Deportivo, while Celta are trying to extend their recent good form.

STATISTICS: BOUNCING BACK
Both Deportivo and RC Celta arrive to this meeting optimistic as they are about to clinch their goals for the season, but 2016 hasn’t been a good year for them, especially for Deportivo, side that just won its first meeting in the new year.  Los Blanquiazules are the worst team in 2016 with only 9 points in 13 meetings, reason why they are still trying to secure the permanence.

In the case of RC Celta they won four of the last six games in liga and are currently fifth, but their previous form was poor and have only added 17 points in 2016 (only the 10th best mark in the competition). But their recent improvement is inviting Los Celestes to be optimistic for been only six points behind fourth place Villarreal CF, which marks the qualification for the Champions League.

This is the 113th Galician derby playing for a league competition, the series is very equal with Depor having 42 victories, while Celta have 44. Deportivo have won 4 of the last 7, including the one of the first round (2-0). They have only won 8 times after 55 visits to Balaídos, but won 4 of the last 8 games played there.

DEPORTIVO: SIDNEI RETURNS
Sidnei Rechel is back into the roster after a month on the sidelines. The Brazilian defender only lasted 25 minutes in the visit to RCD Espanyol (February 20) and the scans detected a muscle problem that forced him to miss the following five games.

He just joined the group on this week and received the medical okay to play on Friday, some people believe he shouldn’t be risked, but coach Víctor Sánchez considers that he is so important that the best is to send him directly into the starting eleven. Sidnei is the leader of the terms in terms of shots blocked (14) and is second in interceptions (83) and clearances (139).

It’s expected a 4-4-2 formation for the derby. German Lux is the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covers the right side of the defence, the left sector is for Fernando Navarro, then Alejandro Arribas joins Sidnei at the central positions.

Álex Bergantiños and Pedro Mosquera are the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia attacks from the right wing, Fayçal Fajr does it from the left, while the central attackers are Lucas Pérez and Luis Alberto

Cani surpassed an ankle problem and was included into the roster, so the only two players at the injury room are Manuel Pablo and Fabricio Agosto. Three men are out for tactical reasons: Juan Dominguez, Jonás Gutiérrez and Jonathan Rodriguez

List of picked players: (19): Lux, Manu, Pletikosa (goalkeepers); Laure, Lopo, Sidnei, Arribas, Juanfran, Navarro (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Celso Borges, Mosquera, Luisinho, Cartabia, Cani, Fayçal Fajr (midfielders); Oriol Riera, Lucas Pérez & Luis Alberto (attackers)

CELTA: FINDING THE BALANCE
If this version of Celta has needed something, it is balance between goals scored and goals allowed. The physical problems of Nolito have reduced his presence in the scoresheet, but with Iago Aspas recovering his best form, the offensive department seems well covered.

So, the problem in the past has been located in defence. The team has allowed 56 goals, the 7th worst mark in la liga, even worse than the mark of Depor (43). Due to this reason their goal average is negative despite been fifth at the standings (-8).

Eduardo Berrizo is aware of the situation and has been making adjustments, and it worked out lately as within the last five games they clinched four clean sheets, curiously the only time they allowed goals was a devastating 1-7 loss at Real Madrid. So, they seem fragile at times.

As the case of Deportivo with Borges, the Argentine coach has been unable to test a final lineup for the derby due to the large number of international players.  It is expected, however, that he will present an offensive team with Aspas, Orellana, Nolito and Guidetti playing at the same time.

The draw should be a 4-2-3-1 with Sergio Álvarez covering the goal, Hugo Mallo performs at the right side of the defence, Jonny Castro covers the left flank, with Argentine Gustavo Cabral and Sergi Gómez plays at the central positions.

Pablo Hernández received the medical okay to play on Friday, but it’s expected that Serbian Nemanja Radoja and Danish Daniel Wass will be the centre midfielders, Iago Aspas attacks from the right wing, Nolito does it from the left, Fabián Orellana is the playmaker and John Guidetti is the centre forward.

Swedish Guidetti had problems to adapt to the team, but after the injury of Nolito he has had a lot of chances and has scored 4 of his 7 goals since February, including one in the last game at Valencia CF. Similar is the form of Aspas, who has scored four goals and provided an assist in his last six league appearances.
