REVIEW: EIBAR 1 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

24 Apr 2016
Two faces for Depor in the game, the best one came in the second part with the Galicians scoring a goal and pushing for more. The point tastes like gold in the quest for the permanence.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Víctor Sánchez returned to the 4-4-2 figure, the novelties were Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ and Fede Cartabia performing on the right side, the Madrilenian in defence and the Argentine in attack. Also, Fernando Navarro was going to be the left-back, but he suffered a gastric problem and Juanfran Moreno replaced him.

Manu Fernández was the goalkeeper, Laure played at the right side of the defence, Juanfran returned to the left as Alejandro Arribas was playing alongside Sidnei Rechel at the centre. Pedro Mosquera and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Fayçal Fajr did it from the left, then Oriol Riera and Lucas Pérez were the centre forwards.

At SD Eibar, coach Mendilibar was presenting a 4-4-2 draw with Bosnian Izet Hajrović performing on the left wing. Sergi Enrich and ex-Deportivo Borja Bastón were the main references in attack.

FIRST HALF
Sad first half for Deportivo, there was no initial reaction after the heavy loss with FC Barcelona. The Galicians conceded a new goal in a corner-kick and later were unable to complete a shot on target despite having some fluency with the ball.

The game started with SD Eibar pushing and attempting a couple of crosses that didn’t cause any problem, Depor were holding at the back zone and waiting for the counterattack. And the first goal in the meeting arrived quickly and it was the first chance to score in the game; actually it was the lonely shot on target in this part.

Once again Depor defended poorly a corner-kick, the cross from Izet Hajrović was met twice by Adrián González, firstly his header was deflected, then he collected the loose ball and released a lot shot that was deflected by Riera and the ball ended at the back of the net.

There was no reaction from Depor in the following minutes, the Galician team started to have long ball possessions, but later there was no depth. Cartabia was well marked and the long passes searching for Lucas were ineffective.

Depor’s only attempt within the first 25 minutes was a long-range shot by Fajr that missed the target (24’). More dangerous was the attempt from Borja Bastón, who picked a pass by Keko, eluded a rival and fired over the crossbar (26’).

The Galicians were having fluency with the ball at the moment of reaching the attacking half, the problem is that later they were lacking ideas and precision in the pass looking for a man inside the area. Eibar were feeling pretty comfortable, though they were also missing passes in defence that gave them some problems.

The best moment for Deportivo in the half came within the last ten minutes, with four straight corner-kicks, a crossed shot by Fajr (38’) that missed the target and a drilling cross from Lucas that didn’t find a receiver (40’).

SECOND HALF
Just liked Víctor warned before the game, this Depor showed a different face after a poor start, it was more vertical and especially more combinative. The passing game of the visiting team forced Eibar to step back and the Galicians clearly deserved the point.

The final part started in the same way as the major part of the first half: Deportivo missing a path and Eibar trying to control the game. However, this impression changed quickly as the Galicians started to have some chances.

The first opportunity arrived early, it was a combination between Lucas and Riera that ended with a loose ball at the left corner of the area, Laure found it, but he missed the target (54’). Two minutes later Izet Hajrović hit the crossbar in a direct free-kick for the locals. That was going to be the best opportunity for Eibar in this half.

With the passage of the minutes the game became intense; Depor were attacking through fast attacks, while Eibar were responding with quick counterattacks that gave problems to the visiting team, also their countless corner-kicks that forced Manu to make a couple of clearances.

Depor should have scored the equalizer at minute 62, Sidnei joined the attack and drilled the ball to Borges, who later released a low cross from the left that found Cartabia alone enough to push the ball in from close range, but instead the Argentine sent the ball out.

Cartabia redeemed himself from the previous error scoring the equalizer. It was a similar play in which he collected a pass from Riera on the left side of the area and, after trying to dribble a rival, he decided to release a low shot that local goalie Asier Riesgo was unable to stop as he was blocked by two team mates.

Then Víctor made the first change and Cani replaced Fajr. At this point in the game the tide was favourable to Depor, the visiting side had the initiative and approached to the rival’s area with accurate passes, however they missed to end the plays. Lucas was not having his day, while Riera was busier falling to the wings.

In the end the third shot on target in the game came until minute 77, it was a header of Mauro dos Santos after a corner-kick that was blocked by Manu. The fact of only having three shots on target demonstrates the poor moment of both sides in this second round, this despite their efforts. The final change for Depor was the entry of Jonás Gutiérrez for Cartabia, the first only touched the ball once.

AFTER THE GAME
Víctor was saying before the game that Depor was missing regularity, and it was noticed again, with a poor first part in which there was no reaction from the heavy loss at the Riazor, while things improved in the second with a more accurate team with the passes, though they only completed one shot on target. Cartabia was the best man, the only one that had a decent performance in both halves and it was him who scored the equalizer.

With this result Depor reached the mark of 18 draws in liga, a new record at Primera. It also means to extend the lead over the relegation zone to seven points waiting for the game of Getafe FC, precisely the next visiting side at the Riazor (Sunday, 18h15 CET)
