MATCHDAY 35: REACHING THE PEAK

26 Apr 2016
Three matchdays are remaining and nothing is defined yet in La Liga. The title and the fourth place remain open, while nobody has suffered yet the relegation. The only thing for sure is the name of the seven clubs that will play in Europe.

Matchdays 33, 34 and 35 were played in a frame of ten days and la liga continues to be an interesting competition that remains open with only three games to go. 30 matches were played and there was only one 0-0 (Villarreal Vs. Real Sociedad).

Only two clubs were able to win the last three games, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, both Madrilenians sides are still searching the title in liga and things got interested after FC Barcelona was unexpectedly defeated by Valencia CF at the Camp Nou (1-2), result that left Atlético tied in points with the Catalans and Real only one point behind. But the Catalans reacted with big wins over Deportivo (8-0) and Sporting Gijón (6-0) with Luis Suárez scoring four goals in each game.

The 20 teams in the league picked at least a point within the last three matchdays, but five sides were the main losers on last week as they only picked one point: Villarreal CF, Málaga CF, Deportivo, Real Sociedad and RCD Espanyol.

Villarreal CF seem to be fading away and for that reason the fight for the fourth place remains open. However, it’s already clear the seven clubs that will play European competition on next season, with the final in Copa taking place between FC Barcelona and Sevilla CF, it’s certain that the first seven positions will have a spot, so the Andalusians, plus Athletic Club and RC Celta will have European football on next season, for now they only need to define their final positions, which is important in order to avoid the previous rounds in the UEFA Europa League.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Barcelona 82 102 29
2 Atlético 82 59 16
3 Real Madrid 81 104 32
4 Villarreal 61 42 31
5 Celta 57 49 55
6 Athletic 55 53 43
7 Sevilla 52 49 42
8 Valencia 44 44 42

The battle to avoid demotion is now reduced to seven teams: Deportivo, RCD Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano, Granada CF, Sporting Gijón, Getafe CF and Levante UD.  Deportivo might have picked only one point, but the other results have left the permanence at reach.

Levante UD have one feet at Segunda, on Sunday the Valencians incredibly wasted a 2-0 lead at the last minutes in their home game with Athletic Club (2-2 in the end) and are now four points below safety. Getafe CF also suffered a blow after a late goal forced them to drop two points at home before Valencia CF (2-2), but at least they are only one point below salvation.

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
16 Rayo Vallecano 35 48 69
17 Granada 33 39 63
18 Sporting 32 35 61
19 Getafe 32 33 64
20 Levante 29 33 63

MATCHDAY 36: FIRST DEFINITIONS
The first relegation could be confirmed on next Monday. Levante UD visit Málaga CF, and if both Granada CF and Rayo Vallecano have won their games, then the Valencians will be relegated in case of losing. The race for the title will remain open no matter the results, and the three candidates face accessible meetings, with Atlético Madrid hosting Rayo Vallecano, FC Barcelona visiting Real Betis and Real Madrid visiting Real Sociedad.

It’s an important matchday for Depor as the permanence could be secured at the Riazor facing direct rival Getafe CF. A win will make the job, while a draw could it too in combination with other results. The matchday is completed with other five games: Sporting Gijón Vs. SD Eibar; Granada CF Vs. UD Las Palmas; Athletic Club Vs. RC Celta; RCD Espanyol Vs. Sevilla CF and Valencia CF Vs. Villarreal CF.
