MATCHDAY 37: UPS AND DOWNS

11 May 2016
The penultimate matchday didn’t define the champion and neither the last two relegated clubs, but four clubs reached the salvation, including Deportivo, while Atlético was surprisingly left out of the title race.

It was the most exciting matchday on the season, the full matchday 37 was played at the same time and, despite the title and the relegation wasn’t defined, there were exciting moments and surely some surprises. The main surprise took place at the top of the standings and it was the defeat of Atlético Madrid.

Los Rojiblancos were visiting already relegated Levante UD in what seemed to be an easy task for them; and they clinched an early lead that reaffirmed that impression, but the Madrilenians ended losing 2-1. The outcome left them out of the title race as the other two contenders, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, won their games.

The Catalans didn’t face any problem in the regional derby and trashed RCD Espanyol at the Camp Nou (5-0). More controversial was the victory of Real Madrid over Valencia CF (3-2), which included a goal in offside that should have been disallowed.

Another news is that RC Celta claimed the fifth place after a 1-0 win over Málaga CF. The Galicians seized the fact that Athletic Club only got a point visiting UD Las Palmas (0-0) in a game that marked the good-bye for Juan Carlos Valerón. The fifth place is important as it directly qualifies for the Europa League, while the sixth could end playing the preliminary round depending on Sevilla CF and it’s two finals in Copa and Europa League.

One matchday is remaining and for now only Levante UD are relegated. Four clubs clinched the permanence, Deportivo succeeded visiting Villarreal CF (0-2) and reached the mark of 42 points. Real Betis are also saved after a 1-1 draw visiting SD Eibar.

Granada CF clinched an impressive 1-4 win visiting Sevilla CF and are also saved, while RCD Espanyol is out of the drama despite their heavy loss at the Camp Nou. Granada CF are already saved as, despite only been three points above relegation, all the possible results in the last matchday guarantee their permanence, this for the tie-breaker with Getafe CF and Sporting Gijón.

Only three clubs remain in serious problems, they will decide in the last matchday the other two teams going down. Rayo Vallecano is the side in the worst situation after a disappointing loss visiting Real Sociedad (2-1), side that was playing for nothing. The Madrilenians were out of relegation since matchday 22, but now they are penultimate in the worst possible moment.

There was drama in Madrid with the 1-1 draw between Getafe CF and Sporting Gijón. The Asturians were leading for the major part of the game, but were reduced to ten men and dropped two points that could be definitive.

MATCHDAY 38: THE END
La Liga has divided the last matchday in “packages” depending on what’s at stake. There are three games with both sides playing for nothing; Valencia CF Vs. Real Sociedad; Málaga CF Vs. UD Las Palmas and RCD Espanyol Vs. SD Eibar. Those three meetings are played in separated kick-off times.

The title will be defined on Saturday with FC Barcelona visiting Granada CF and Real Madrid playing at the Riazor against Deportivo. Also on Saturday, but 30 minutes later after the champion is defined, the fifth place will be known. Athletic Club are hosting Sevilla CF, while RC Celta visit Atlético Madrid.

Finally, the drama is reserved for Sunday with three games that will define the permanence at the elite. Sporting Gijón are hosting Villarreal CF; Getafe CF visit Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano entertain Levante UD.
