SEASON 2015/16, TACTICAL ANALYSIS

22 May 2016
The 4-4-2 prevailed, though at the beginning Víctor preferred to use the 4-2-3-1. The main headache for the coach was the lack of wingers, reason why he had to improvise with Fajr and Cartabia.

The most used lineup during the liga season 2015/16 was the 4-4-2, this draw was implemented in 17 opportunities, while the 4-2-3-1 was used in 16 league games. Víctor started the campaign using the latter as it was the system dragged from the previous season.

But things changed as soon as the coach realized of the good chemistry between Luis Alberto and Lucas Pérez. So, he passed from playing with one forward to use two and it worked out, at least in the first round of the tournament.

What wasn’t changed was the problematic lived with the wingers. Deportivo only had Cardoso as a natural winger, and with his exit during the winter window the coach ended without any specific man for these functions.

Throughout the season the coach lacked depth on the wings and tried to improvise with Cani, Fajr and Cartabia, the trio worked at times, but mainly because they were crossing the field in order to join the attack by the centre. Víctor also tried to improvise with Juanfran and Luisinho performing as wingers, but it neither brought good results.

By the end of the season, and with the team falling down, Víctor tried radical alternatives, and it was then that he tested other formations. The 5-3-2 was used for the visit to Sevilla CF, it partially worked as it helped to add a point despite not having a good performance, and in the following matchday the coach played with a 4-3-3 against FC Barcelona, which turned into the disaster of the 0-8 at the Riazor. More successful was the implementation of the 4-1-4-1, figure used in the visit to Villarreal CF and that meant to secure the permanence.
