The tenth signing of the season 2016/17 is Carles Gil. The playmaker comes loaned from Aston Villa. It’s the fourth former player of Elche CF that joins the club within the last two seasons.

On Friday Deportivo confirmed the signing of Aston Villa’s playmaker Carles Gil. The club informed that the operation is a loan deal lasting one year. Depor’s press release didn’t inform if the agreement includes a buyout option, but the media understands that there’s no option for a future buy.

The player completed the medicals on Friday and talked to reporters; he said that he didn’t hesitate in signing for Depor, “I am very happy for been here, since Deportivo got interested in me it turned to be my first option. I had friends and team mates that have been here and spoke greatly of the club, the wait was long, but in the end it was worthy. It called my attention since the first day. Deportivo got interested since a while ago, fortunately I had several options, which included staying at Aston Villa, but everything was clear since the day Depor called me.”

Carles Gil is a playmaker that can also perform on the wing (right-footed used on the left and right wing); it’s a very similar case to Fede Cartabia, who actually was his team mate at Valencia’s academy. Gil is well-known for his passing game, but he got used to perform on the wing since the stage at Cadetes.

Despite been praised by his skills, the coaching staff at Valencia’s academy didn’t give him too many opportunities, so he only played 17 games at Segunda B during the season 2011/12. Still, the club didn’t want to get rid of him and negotiated a loan deal with Elche CF.

That was a good move, because the Valencian player was going to conquer the promotion to Primera during the campaign 2012/13 playing 31 games and scoring 4 goals, one year later he shone at Primera making 33 appearances and scoring once.

He then returned to Valencia CF and ended earning a chance with coach Nuno Espírito Santo ahead of the season 2014/15, but once again no one trusted him at the Valencian club and he only managed to play eight times with Los Ches in the first part of that season. Tired of not having a chance, he decided to leave. Valencia CF didn’t oppose since his contract was ruling out six months later and the club was lucky to meet the interest of Aston Villa, side that paid €4.5 million for him.

But the stage at the Premier League wasn’t pleasant, in the first season there (second part of the campaign 2014/15) he only made five appearances, and last season he played 23 times and was part of a poor team that ended at the bottom place. Now he’s eager to return to Spain and recover the form that was shown at Elche CF.

Gil is the tenth signing of Deportivo ahead of the season 2016/17. Previously the Galician club completed the signings of goalkeepers Przemysław Tytoń and Rubén Martínez, right-back Juanfran Moreno, centre-back Raúl Albentosa, wingers Bruno Gama and Emre Çolak, centre midfielders Fayçal Fajr and Guilherme, plus attacker Borja Valle.

Curiously, this is also the fourth signing coming from the Elche’s team that was under the command of Fran Escribá two seasons ago. Last year, Fayçal Fajr and Pedro Mosquera came directly from the Valencian team, while early this summer, Deportivo signed Przemysław Tytoń from VfB Stuttgart.
