REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 0 – ATHLETIC 1 (LIGA)

12 Sep 2016
First defeat with Garitano, Depor didn’t do too much, but it neither deserved to lose this game. The worst news was that Joselu and Sidnei had to be replaced due to injury reasons.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Gaizka Garitano decided to play with a 4-4-2 figure, Joselu debuted at Depor after only one week training with the squad. Lux was the starting goalie, Juanfran covered the right side in defence, Luisinhoperformed on the left, then Sidnei and Albentosa were the centre-backs.

Celso Borges arrived late during the week after playing for Costa Rica, but he was a starter alongside Pedro Mosquera at midfield; Carles Gil attacked from the right wing, Fayçal Fajr did it from the left, then Florin Andone joined Joselu in attack.

At Athletic Club, coach Ernesto Valverde presented the novelty of Muniain on the left wing, the other novelty was the presence of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was a starter as Iraizoz was rested. Aritz Aduriz was the main reference in attack.

FIRST HALF
Once again Deportivo presented a grey football; dominating the ball possession, but later unable to create harm. To make things worse, recent signing Juanlu was replaced due to an injury and the team conceded a late goal in the half.

Slow start for both sides, Deportivo were having the ball possession, but it only reached the rival’s area through long throws. In one of those plays Joselu found the ball at the edge of the area and his shot went over the crossbar (6’).

The second chance in the game was also for Depor, Carles Gil released the cross from the left and Andone headed the ball into the far post (10’), Kepa arrived in time to deflect it. In the resulting corner-kick Albentosa headed the ball out.

Athletic’s first shot in the game came at minute 13, a long throw was headed by Aduriz, the ball reached the path of Raúl García, who later sent a shot that was an easy catch for Lux. Two minutes later San José missed by inches the ball after a lateral free-kick by Beñat.

Joselu only lasted 23 minutes on the pitch, this after been tackled by Raúl García. The midfielder was booked and the striker was replaced by Borja Valle. The latter only touched the ball ten times in the half.

Athletic was dangerous at the moment of throwing the corner-kicks, Depor never felt comfortable defending these plays. In one of these occasions Raul García was close to score heading a ball that was deflected by Mosquera (31’).

At minute 35, Andone was close to score after collecting a drilling cross at the left side of the area, but he lasted too much in releasing a shot and in the end the ball was deflected to corner-kick. This was the best opportunity for Depor in the first part.

And then the visiting side scored the lonely goal in the match, Raúl García picked the ball at the edge of the area and released a strong shot that went into the top-left corner of Lux. There was no reaction by a thick Depor.

SECOND HALF
The locals didn’t improve too much, but they were the ones doing more things for an equalizer that should have arrived, but that was invalidated by the referees. There was a new injury case as Sidnei Rechel had to be replaced due to a muscle problem.

Depor had the first opportunity in the half, Andone collected the ball in a throw-in and his low shot was saved by Kepa (49’). Then Sidnei picked a muscle injury and in a distraction Beñat drilled the ball inside the area, only Juanfran saved Depor before the ball reached the path of Aduriz (51’).

Alejandro Arribas replaced Sidnei, so Garitano had to make two changes due to physical reasons. Deportivo seemed affected by the situation and Athletic had things under control, Raúl García was close to score with a new shot from the edge of the area (56’) and the Galicians were still relying in the long throws.

The last substitution at Depor was the entry of Marlos Moreno for Carles Gil. The latter did nothing in the game and the true is that the Colombian, despite missing a clear chance at the end, left a positive impression with his solo moves.

The Galicians seemed knocked down, their only way trying to attack were the long throws, but still they deserved more from this game. They had three clear chances within the last ten minutes, the first was a direct-free-kick of Fajr that hit the wall and that later Juanfran translated into a low shot blocked by Kepa (80’).

Then Andone scored with a precise shot after collecting a low pass, but the assistant invalidated a legal goal as the Romanian was well placed at the moment of the pass by Juanfran (85’). The last chance was for Marlos Moreno after collecting a loose ball at the right side of the box, but he didn’t connect the ball properly (89’).

AFTER THE GAME
New grey presentation for Depor, but the Galicians deserved a point before an apathetic Athletic that could have paid the price within the last ten minutes. The worst news was that both Juanlu and Sidnei suffered injuries, in the case of the striker it seems to be a ligaments injury on his right knee, which would mean to be out for a couple of months. New scans will be made during the week.

This is the first defeat on the season and the first with Gaizka Garitano on board. The next game is the visit to Deportivo Alavés (Monday, September 19, 20h45 CET).
