Disaster at the Riazor. Depor scored a goal and hit the woodwork twice, but ended losing the game after committing big errors in defence. Ryan Babel debuted and passed unnoticed.

Coach Gaizka Garitano presented a 4-2-3-1 lineup that was pretty similar to the team that played before Alavés three days before. The only novelty was the presence of Emre Çolak taking the place of Fayçal Fajr.

Lux was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, with Arribas and Albentosa covering the central positions. Borges and Mosquera were the centre midfielders, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Çolak was the playmaker, Marlos Moreno was the left winger and Florin Andone was the centre forward.

At CD Leganés, coach Asier Garitano presented the expected lineup; Brazilian Luciano Neves was the reference in attack. Ex-Depor midfielder Rubén Pérez was a starter at the visiting team.

Two very different faces shown by Depor in the first part; within the first 30 minutes it was the same poor team in attack of past matches, but after scoring the goal it turned into a steamroller that could have scored two or three more goals.

The game had a peaceful start, without any side controlling the ball. Depor’s had the first approximation, Çolak released a cross into the area, Marlos Moreno tried to assist Andone, but a defender cleared the danger (8’).

Two minutes later the Colombian appeared on the left wing, again assisted by Çolak and his low and strong shot was deflected by visiting goalie Jon Serantes. Depor were once again having problems to create scoring opportunities and only had some fluency with the passes of Turkish Çolak and the runs of Marlos Moreno.

Leganés’ first approximation –and only in this half- came at minute 26; it was a shot from Diego Rico that missed the target. The Madrilenians were flat in attack, but neither suffered in defence before a local team Depor that wasn’t finding the way into the visiting area.

And suddenly Depor found the goal, it was born in a new combination between Çolak and Marlos Moreno that ended with Luisinho drilling the ball into the box, Celso Borges was there, between two defenders, to just push the ball in.

The goal changed the entire picture, because Deportivo became a hurricane that should have scored the second goal before the pause. Çolak continued appearing and Luisinho was incisive on the left, one of his crosses was deflected in a rival and that ball hit the crossbar (37’). Later the locals had three corner-kicks within the last ten minutes and in one of them Borges didn’t find a receiver after heading the ball inside the box (39’).

The defence of Depor was praised before after only allowing two goals in the previous four games, but in this half it ended allowing two goals in six minutes to dig the second loss of the season. Everything fell down and not even Garitano seemed clear about the changes that his team needed.

The final part started as the first ended: with Depor harassing and close to score the second goal. Andone had three chances in a matter of four minutes, the most dangerous one was a loose ball after a play of Çolak that ended with the Rumanian hitting the crossbar with a header (47’).

And just when Depor were looking better Leganés pushed and scored in its first shot on target. It was a great combination between Brazilians Luciano Neves and Gabriel, the latter released a cross from the left and the striker headed the ball at the near post past Lux.

And this goal provoked a new big twist in the game, because Depor disappeared from the lawn and instead Leganés seemed more dangerous through a vivid Luciano.  There was no reaction by the locals and soon the visiting side scored the second goal shocking the Riazor. It was a disaster of the whole defence. The goal-kick from Serantes was poorly defended, suddenly the ball was at the left wing and, after one deflection, substitute Víctor Diaz put the ball  into the box, two men were offside, but Gabriel came from behind to head the ball over Lux.

Gaizka Garitano reacted allowing the debut of Ryan Babel replacing Marlos Moreno. It wasn’t a good choice as the Dutchman didn’t do anything on the pitch, later Borja Valle and Fajr replaced Bruno Gama and Luisinho, these changes neither helped and it was even strange as Valle ended performing as a full-back.

Depor have wasted all the good feelings of the end of the first part and the start of the second, and in a stroke of a pen this impression was replaced by an insecure team in defence that suffered with the counterattacks from the Madrilenians. Luciano could have scored the third after heading a cross from the left, but he missed the target (78’).

The impotence was felt at the Riazor as the fans started to whistle a team that wasn’t creating any danger. Depor only had one clear chance to score within the last 30 minutes, it was a solo play of Andone on the left side of the area that ended with a Rumanian eluding two rivals and releasing a strong shot that was saved by Serantes (84’).

Second defeat on the season, it seemed Depor were finally erasing the impression of not creating goal chances after a promising end in the first half, but it was a mirage that turned into a nightmare in the second half after allowing two goals in a frame of four minutes. Emre Çolak shone at times, but it wasn’t the guidance that the team needed. Garitano also with changes that didn’t add anything to a clueless team in the second part.

Without time to digest the loss, Depor travel to Madrid and face one of the toughest challenges of the season: Atlético Madrid at the Calderón stadium (Sunday, 16h15 CET)
