NOTES FROM THE GAME VS VALENCIA

02 Nov 2016
Deportivo had a better performance than in previous games, it felt more comfortable before a rival having the ball possession. Tytoń left some doubts, while Marlos Moreno, Juanfran and Çolak had a solid performance.

The six notes from the game Vs. Valencia CF:

1- Better and longer: It was one of the best games on the season for Depor, as it has been normal the team felt comfortable as it didn’t have the ball (only 39% of ball possession), Valencia conceded a lot of space and therefore it was easier to release the counterattack, mainly through Çolak and Marlos Moreno.

Another thing to notice was that Depor’s good moments lasted longer. Against CD Leganés the team fell down in the second part after moments of brilliancy in the first half, now the team was solid in larges stages in both halves and not even the equalizer broke the spirit of the team, something that cost defeats in past meetings. The pity is that Deportivo only grabbed a point under these circumstances, something that Garitano referred to during his press conference, “I believe we were better in several phases. Surely we aren’t fine in different moments in the games. When we are bad we end losing and when we are fine it is hard for us to win.”

2- Tytoń, yes and no: The big surprise at the starting lineup was the debut of Przemysław Tytoń (the player number 445 that performs for with Depor at the elite). In past games, German Lux was criticized because it seemed that every shot on target was ending in goal due to the slow reaction from the Argentine, and the debut of the Polish goalie left mixed feelings.

In one hand, Tytoń made two key saves that demonstrated that he has better reflexes than Lux, but at the same time he could have done better in the play of the equalizer, because he should have got the ball in the cross that generated the secondary play of Nani. A small mistake, but it cost a goal.

3- Great game by Çolak: Emre Çolak returned after been dropped for the Galician derby, and he ended as the best player in the game against Valencia CF. He showed glimpse of his class like in previous game, but in this opportunity, he was more decisive.

And it’s that Turkish Çolak not only scored the goal for Deportivo, but also was the man with more touches (69) and more shots on target (2). He also had the fourth highest pass accuracy among Deportivo’s players (81%). Definitely he plays better performing at the centre and not attached to the wing.

4- Solid performance for Juanfran: Right-back Juanfran Moreno not only had a good game in defence, but also was decisive in attack. Usually criticized for his poor crosses, this time the Madrilenian attempted seven crosses and three of them met the target, including his precise cross from the right wing that meant Depor’s goal at the end of the first half.

5- The speed of Marlos: Marlos Moreno is growing at Deportivo, after been intermittent in past games, now he lasted more time against Valencia. The open space left by Los Che allowed him to break the visiting defence with his speed, something that cost two yellow cards and that created some opportunities to score.

The problem for the Colombian attacker is that he still making bad decisions during the game, he attempts a shot when the best thing is to extend the plays and extends the plays when the best thing is to shot on target. The best example is the play at minute 43, after stealing the ball at the edge of the area he decided to shot when all he had to do is run towards the goal and extend the play searching for the best alternative. He was the player with more shots in the game (5), but only once he met the target.

6- Late changes: Garitano planned a wise game and only failed with the changes, because the three of them were made within the final fifteen minutes, just when the team was already tired and when Valencia had already made their three substitutions. Thus, two of the changes (Borges and Juanfran) were not alternatives searching to unbalance the game, but to keep the team in the same place as the players going out were having muscle problems.
