Déjà vu for Deportivo in a dramatic game with ups and downs. The Galicians were better but were losing 3-1 twenty minutes before the end, then it scored twice to end conceded a new late goal to lose again.

Coach Gaizka Garitano decided to bench Pedro Mosquera for the game, the Galician midfielder had been a starter in eleven of the previous twelve league meetings. The rest was the expected 4-2-3-1 formation.

Tytoń was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, Sidnei and Albentosa covered the central positions; Guilherme and Celso Borges were the centre midfielders, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Marlos Moreno did it from the left, Fayçal Fajr was the playmaker and Florin Andone was the striker.

At Málaga CF, coach Juande Ramos only presented one novelty in his lineup as Uruguayan Michael Santos was a starter attacking from the right wing. Striker Sandro Ramírez was the main reference in attack after netting four goals in his previous five games.

A good version of Deportivo in the first part, but in the end the usual result at the moment of reaching the pause, because the Galicians claimed the lead only to witness how Málaga CF came back with two set-pieces. Depor had the ball and the best opportunities, but were losing the game by half-time.

The game couldn’t have a better start; Depor had the initiative despite the high pressure of the locals and the Galicians found an early penalty. Bruno Gama was fouled when he was entering the area by the right corner and the referee whistled the penalty, then Celso Borges scored from the spot with a strong shot into the centre of the goal. It’s the fourth straight time with Depor scoring the first goal in the game (in the previous three it was unable to win).

Málaga CF tried to take control of the game after the goal and their first chance was a direct free-kick that Juanpi sent over the crossbar (10’). The Galicians responded with Bruno Gama shooting from the same zone when he earned the penalty and this time his deflected shot was blocked by local goalie Carlos Kameni (12’). The Portuguese was pretty active in this first half and was among the best players at the visiting team.

Málaga were trying to push, but Depor were looking better, having long ball possessions and finding cracks at the local defence, thus Fajr assisted Andone in a quick play in which the Romanian was left alone before Kameni, but his drilling shot from the right side of the area went close to the far post (16’).

And then it came the “usual” came back from the rival, because Iñaki Garrido whistled a penalty of Borges over Michael Santos, who collected the ball inside the area when he was backwards the goal, Borges was behind him and embraced the Uruguayan, who fell down when he felt the pressure from the midfielder. The same attacker tied the game from the spot.

The script didn’t change after the equalizer. Depor were still feeling comfortable before a rival having problems in the output of the ball. In one of those local distractions Guilherme attempted a long-range shot that missed the target (26’).

And Málaga were going to take the lead in a new set-piece. Albentosa committed a foul at the edge of the area and in the resulting free-kick Sandro scored with a magnificent shot into the top-right corner of Tytoń.

Depor weren’t deserving to lose, it had the ball possession (62% in the first half) and had more chances. The Galicians lowered the level in the final minutes of the first part, but still had a last chance to tie the game. It was shot by Bruno Gama from the right side of the area, but his drilling shot passed close to the far post of (45’).

A new hard finish for Depor. The team had a bad start in the half and concede again, this time it showed some spirit and was rewarded with two goals, but when the dream of a possible victory was probable, a new late goal left the team empty handed.

The final part started with a nervous Depor; Málaga CF were having more ball possession and attacked taking advantage of the speed of Sandro, later their high pressure was forcing Deportivo to rely in the long throws. The ex-Barca striker picked a muscle problem and was replaced, but the situation didn’t change for the visitors.

Still, Depor could have tied the game in a counterattack in which Andone, instead of assisting Fajr or Marlos Moreno, tried to score with a lateral shot that missed the target (53’). Just two minutes later the locals scored the third goal. It was a cross from Fornals that Michael Santos found inside the area to score with a strong shot from the box. No one was marking him.

Deportivo seemed dead with the two-goal disadvantage, in previous meetings the team were always felling down after suffering the pain of losing the advantage, but this time it was different. The visitors had a first clear chance to reduce the gap. It was a counterattack in which neither Marlos Moreno nor Andone were able to push the ball from inside the box (62’). Kameni was key to avoid the goal in both opportunities.

Carles Gil was the first substitution as he replaced Fajr and Depor changed. Marlos Moreno was moved to the centre and the Valencian was going to be determinant. Deportivo had a new chance with Andone, this time the Romanian picked a pass from the left when he was inside the area, but his drilling shot was blocked by Kameni (69’)

And Depor saw some light at the end of the tunnel with the second goal, Carles Gil released a perfect cross from the left and Andone arrived on time to head the ball home. It’s his third goal for Depor and the third straight game with him scoring.

The goal brought life to Depor and the Galicians harassed within the final fifteen minutes, Borges headed a cross from the right and Kameni made the save (78’), in the next play Andone failed again before the Cameroonian international.

And then Depor found the deserved reward as it was able to tie the game. In lateral free-kick the Galicians hurried the play and again Carles Gil showed up to release a cross from the right, Kameni should have blocked the low cross, but somehow the ball passed between his hands and Borges was behind to score again.

Suddenly, the game had changed again and Depor even saw the chance to win the game, Çolak and Mosquera entered for Marlos Moreno and Guilherme. Andone had a new chance to score (88’) and when the draw seemed done, then Málaga score again with an impossible shot. Ontiveros seized the poor mark of Mosquera and released a strong shot from the edge of the area that went into the top-left corner of Tytoń, again it was impossible for the Polish goalie.

Ungrateful game for Deportivo, the Galicians were better and deserved the victory, but the poor defence and some bad luck with two great goals by the Andalusians marked the way. For the fourth straight time the Galicians are unable to win after scoring the first goal and for the second straight time they lose with the rival scoring the winner in the stoppage time.

Depor could end the matchday in relegation, but it will depend of other results. The next liga game is hosting Real Sociedad (Riazor, Monday, 20h45 CET). But before the Galicians must return to Andalusia on Tuesday in order to debut in Copa Del Rey visiting Real Betis (Benito Villamarín stadium, 22h00 CET)
