PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – BETIS (COPA)

21 Dec 2016
Garitano makes rotations in what could be the last game of Babel and Borja Valle with Depor. Víctor Sánchez continues to be questioned at Real Betis and will also make changes for the game.

Referee: José Luis González González
Kick-off: 21h00 CET (Riazor)

STATISTICS: RECOVERING A 0-1 DISADVANTAGE
For the third opportunity on this century Deportivo are trying to pass a round in Copa Del Rey after losing the first-leg on the road with a 1-0 score. The Galicians failed in the previous two opportunities, in 2000 they were facing CA Osasuna in the third round and, after losing 1-0 at El Sadar, they fell again at the Riazor with the same score.

The scenario was repeated in 2011 after Depor were facing Oltra’s UD Almeria in the quarterfinals of the competition, after the initial 1-0 win for the Andalusians, the teams went to the Riazor and Deportivo lost the second-leg with a 2-3 score. Precisely that was the last opportunity in which Deportivo played the quarterfinals in Copa, in the following five tournaments the Galicians didn’t pass the last-16 round.

The last time Depor were able to comeback in a Copa series after losing 1-0 in a first-leg played on the road was for the campaign 1996/97 (second round). The team lost 1-0 at RCD Mallorca and in the retuning leg clinched a 3-0 win at the Riazor thanks to a brace by Manjarín and a goal by Madar.

DEPORTIVO: ROTATIONS & GOOD-BYES
Coach Gaizka Garitano was feeling sorry as there’s a break in la liga, this for the current form of his players, but neither wants to risk the health of his men and is resting normal starter before the holidays. The game can also be the last one of two men at Deportivo. Ryan Babel hasn’t renewed his contract and could be playing for the last time at the Riazor. Meanwhile, Borja Valle is close to go out loaned to a Segunda club to be determined.

Team news: Garitano is resting four normal starters for the game: Tytoń, Andone, Carles Gil and Navarro. In the case with Andone, he was dragging a muscle issue and the coach preferred to rest him. Laure is the only player at the injury room. Borja Valle is part of the game despite it was commented that he is about to be loaned out.  No one from Depor B was included in the list for the game.

Man to watch: Attacker Ryan Babel. Only a few people saw with good eyes the arrival of this veteran Dutch player, but after eleven presentations he scored four goals and provided an assist. Now, no one wants him to leave and this is could be his last game with the Galicians as his contract rules out on next week and Beşiktaş JL seems close to sign him.

Picked players: (18) Lux, Rubén Martínez (goalkeepers); Juanfran, Arribas, Albentosa, Sidnei, Luisinho (defenders); Álex Bergantiños Borges, Pedro Mosquera, Çolak, Fajr, Guilherme, Bruno Gama (midfielders); Joselu, Marlos Moreno, Ryan Babel & Borja Valle (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Rubén Martínez –Juanfran, Albentosa, Arribas, Luisinho – Bruno Gama, Álex Bergantiños, Mosquera, Marlos Moreno – Babel, Joselu.

BETIS: NOT ENOUGH
Ex-Depor Víctor Sánchez remains questioned after losing in liga before Deportivo Alavés (1-0), more precisely the whole project is questioned as the general opinion is that the team should be doing better taking in mind the resources invested by the club. On next week the Andalusians are making their annual shareholders meeting and the prediction is that it will be tough as there are internal groups trying to take control of the club.

For the Copa game, Víctor is expected to make rotations, but it should be a very similar team to the one saw in the first-leg taking in mind the list of picked players. Rubén Castro is expected to start on the bench with Álex Alegria having a new chance in attack.

Team news: Toni Sanabria goes directly into the starting eleven after surpassing a muscle problem, but winger Joaquin is out for a couple of weeks after sustaining a Soleus injury in the game with Alavés. There are 19 players in the roster as Betis B keeper Álvaro Vallés is part of the tip to A Coruña. Midfielders Nahuel Leiva and Fabián Ruiz remain out of the coach’s plans, while winger Charly Musonda is back in England in order to break his loan deal at Betis.

Man to watch: Striker Toni Sanabria. The Paraguayan wasn’t having too many chances before the first-leg, but then he scored the winning goal in that game and has scored once and provided one assist in his last three games in liga. In his previous game at the Riazor, wearing the shirt of Sporting Gijón, Sanabria scored a brace in only seven minutes (September 20, 2015)

Picked players: (19) Dani Giménez. Manu Herrera, Vallés (goalkeepers); Rafa Navarro, Piccini, Mandi, Pezzella, Bruno González, Ryan Donk, Durmisi (defenders); Petros, Felipe Gutiérrez, Brašanac, Jonas Martin, Cejudo, Dani Ceballos (midfielders) Álex Alegría, Toni Sanabria & Rubén Castro (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Dani Giménez – Rafa Navarro, Piccini, Mandi, José Carlos – Jonas Martín, Donk, Brašanac, Felipe Gutiérrez – Sanabria, Álex Alegría.
