REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 – ALAVÉS 2 (COPA)

04 Jan 2017
Depor rescued a draw after a disastrous performance for 70 minutes; the team didn’t complete any shot on target until Bruno Gama scored, then it could have even won the match taking in mind the chances in favour.

BEFORE THE GAME
A surprise at the lineup of Gaizka Garitano as Álex Bergantiños was benched, while Celso Borges was a starter. Andone wasn’t fit to play and wasn’t on the bench. Fabril’s Óscar García was among the substitutes then.

Rubén Martínez was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Luisinho performed on the left, Arribas and Albentosa were the centre-backs. Borges and Mosqueraperformed at midfield, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Marlos Moreno did it from the left, Çolak was the playmaker and Joselu was the centre forward.

At Alavés, coach Pellegrino presented several novelties compared to the expected lineup. Zouhair Feddal performed at the centre of the defence, Theo Hernández covered the left side in defence and Aleksandar Katai was the playmaker. The reference in attack was Christian Santos.

FIRST HALF
Two mistakes at defense at the beginning and the end of the half cost to be losing the tie by two goals after the first forty-five minutes; in the middle a helpless Deportivo that were unable to create any shot on target despite having the ball possession.

The game started with a big error by Arribas, a cross from the left should have been cleared by the defender, but he was too slow and Christian Santos was wiser to get the ball, face Rubén Martínez one-on-one and drill the ball in.

Depor reacted slowly and their first approximation was a lateral free-kick of Bruno Gama that was cleared by visiting goalie Ortolá (6’). Five minutes later another lateral free-kick was about to end with the equalizer, this time the cross of Çolak was headed by Arribas inside the box, but he sent the ball over the crossbar.

The Basques weren’t having any problem at defense despite Depor were controlling the actions, but at the same time the visiting team was easily losing it at the time of stepping into Depor’s side of the pitch, so the Galicians gave a sense of more presence in attack during the next ten minutes.

But Alavés had a new chance to score, this time a counterattack in which Camarasa was close to connect a cross from the left, but Borges cleared the ball to corner-kick (20’). This action settled the game for the next minutes as Depor were finding sole fluidity to attack, while Alavés were finding a highway to complete the counterattack.

Still, there were no more shots on target until the added time. Theo had the best chance for Alavés with a shot that missed the target after a corner-kick action (32’). Meanwhile Depor only created some danger in two new lateral free-kicks, in the first the cross by Çolak couldn’t be pushed in by Borges (37’); later the cross by Bruno Gama was cleared and later Çolak sent the ball out.

And when the game was heading to half-time, a new error cost the second goal. Mosquera committed a doubtful penalty over Camarasa (he seemed to be steeping outside the area). Edgar scored from the spot and Depor had the big challenge to come back from a 0-2 deficit.

SECOND HALF
Depor only woke up for the final fifteen minutes, but it was enough to rescue a 2-2 draw. It had a lot to do the bad decisions of Pellegrino, who made defensive changes at Alavés that wiped off the solid performance of the first 75 minutes.

The final part started with the same script: Deportivo had the ball, but only created chances in set-pieces. An acrobatic shot by Mosquera that missed the target (49’) after a free-kick was the only chance for Depor after fifteen minutes.

Depor were dead and it seemed that Garitano gave up as he switched the draw into a 4-4-2. Borges and Çolak, normal starters in liga, were replaced by Guilherme and Óscar García, the latter a 20-year-old winger that was making his second appearance with the first team (the previous during last year’s Copa game with UD Llagostera).

Bruno Gama and Marlos Moreno were too ineffective with their individual moves, while Joselu only appeared once after 66 minutes, it was to head out a cross from Bruno Gama. So, it wasn’t strange to see Depor unable to complete a shot on target in 73 minutes.

The third substitution was the entry of Borja Valle for Marlos Moreno and suddenly things changed, because Bruno Gama succeeded in the lonely opportunity in which he was able to beat his mark, he made a solo-move on the right side of the area after a pass by Juanfran and ended drilling the ball between the legs of Ortolá.

The local goal meant a drastic change on the field, at Alavés Pellegrino had replaced Camarasa and his team paid the price, because it was unable to stop the hurricane of the locals, side that even had enough chances to have won the game.

A blocked shot by Guilherme was followed by an attempt of Joselu after a rebound in Óscar García, and the striker sent the ball out (78’). Then there was a clear penalty over Juanfran after a lateral free-kick of Bruno Gama, he was clearly pushed at the left side of the area, but the referee didn’t want to whistle the penalty (86’).

Albentosa could have scored the equalizer with a header that ended with a brilliant save by Ortolá, but the equalizer came in the following play. A lateral free-kick taken by Bruno Gama ended with an initial header of Arribas that was replied with a new header by Joselu at the far post that sent the ball in.

AFTER THE GAME
A little miracle for Deportivo, the team did nothing in 75 minutes, it didn’t complete a shot on target, but was still able to comeback from a 0-2 with goals by Bruno Gama and Joselu. This time Depor seized a chance in the stoppage time to change a score.

The tie is 2-2 now and the second-leg will be played in one week in Mendizorroza (Wednesday, 19h00 CET). Now Depor return to la liga visiting RCD Espanyol (Friday, 20h45 CET)
