REVIEW: ESPANYOL 1 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

07 Jan 2017
A point for Depor to launch 2017, the Galicians were fine and created danger in the second part, but also suffered in some specific moments. Juanfran was sent off at the end of the match.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Gaizka Garitano presented the expected lineup, characterized by the presence of two strikers. . Tytoń was the starting goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, Fernando Navarro performed on the left, Raúl Albentosa and Sidnei Rechel were the centre-backs.

Midfield was territory for Celso Borges and Guilherme, Bruno Gama attacked from the right wing, Emre Çolak performed on the left wing, then Florin Andone and Joselu were the centre forwards.

At RCD Espanyol, coach Quique Sanchez Flores switched the draw from a 4-4-2 into a 4-2-3-1. Salva Sevilla was a starter as Felipe Caicedo was left on the bench. Gerard Moreno was the reference for the goals.

FIRST HALF
Boring half to launch the new year in la liga; RCD Espanyol looked much better within the first fifteen minutes, later the game was more balanced. The problem was the scarce game in attack as there was only a shot on target in this part.

RCD Espanyol had the first chance in the game, Piatti released a cross from the left in a counterattack and Hernán Pérez was unable to head the ball at the box (1’). Four minutes later a new counterattack ended with the first shot on target in the game –the only one in this half-, it was a drilling attempt of Piatti that was blocked by Tytoń.

Depor had problems at the moment of attacking, because it was losing the ball at midfield and later it was bad placed at the moment of the defending the counterattack. At the same time the Galicians were trying to seize the cracks at the local defence, because Piatti and Hernán Pérez weren’t retreating in order to help on the sides, though the visiting team wasn’t unable to create a scoring chance within the first twenty minutes.

With the passage of the minutes it was clear that Deportivo weren’t feeling comfortable on the pitch, the defence had big problems to contain the crosses, mainly the ones coming from the left, while the midfielders weren’t unable to cut the quick attack from the locals. The first moment of danger at Espanyol’s area was created by their own keeper, because Roberto was about to lose the ball in a pass from a defender, in the end he avoided the goal and the corner-kick (20’).

Then the game changed Guilherme appeared and brought balance at midfield and Depor were no longer having too many problems defending the counterattack.  At minute 26, Guilherme was fouled inside the area as he was trying to connect a corner-kick, but the referee didn’t whistle what seemed to be a clear penalty.

At this point in the game the actions were more equal, Depor were no longer suffering in defence and spent more time in the attacking half, though without creating a chance to score. The two chances in this half for Depor came within the last fifteen minutes.

Çolak had a chance to score at minute 36, it was a direct free-kick in which he hit the wall and later Borges missed the target.  This action was replied with a direct free-kick for Espanyol in which Hernán Pérez missed the target with a drilling shot (39’). The last chance I the half was a curved shot of Çolak that passed close to the far post (42’)

SECOND HALF
The final part was totally different, because both sides had clear chances to score. Depor suffered in punctual moments and wasted the initial advantage. The worst part came at the end as Juanfran was sent off with two yellow cards and as Jurado hit the woodwork at the last minute.

The final part started with the first shot on target for Depor in the game, it was a header of Andone in a corner-kick of Bruno Gama (46’). Then the game turned to be exciting and totally different to the boredom witnessed in the first part, because the chances to score showed up.

At minute 47, Jurado couldn’t define before Tytoń after an error of Sidnei; in the next play Borges connected an impressive volley that hit the woodwork, and then Gerard Moreno connected a cross from the left with Tytoń making the save.

The Polish keeper had two consecutive saves in the following minutes, first before Piatti and then deflecting a drilling shot by Jurado. In only ten minutes the game had witnessed more chances than in the entire first part, the major part of them by Espanyol.

But Deportivo cleared the scene and Celso Borges was going to score after two straight corner-kicks for the Galicians. Çolak released a precise cross that the Central American headed perfectly inside the box.

But the advantage only lasted four minutes for Depor, because Gerard Moreno was going to equalize the game seizing a big error from Sidnei. The Brazilian was unable to clear properly a cross from the left and the striker didn’t miss from close range.

As it happened in the first part, the pace was lower as Depor started to dominate the ball possession and after the impulse of the local team. Garitano made the first change until the game was in the final ten minutes, it was the entry of Luisinho for Bruno Gama.

Then things were complicated at the last minute, Juanfran was booked twice in a lateral foul that was almost a penalty, he was sent off and in the free-kick Jurado hit the crossbar in his volley from the left wing, the ball hit the ground and Javi Fuego reacted too late as he was at the goal line and was unable to push the ball in (90+1’).

The last substitution was the entry of Borja Valle for Andone. To mention that the referee showed all the yellow cards to Depor, but didn’t want to use the same criterion with the local team (Salva Sevilla should also been sent off with two yellow cards), situation that was constantly criticized by Depor’s players.

AFTER THE GAME
New year and almost same vice for Depor; the Galicians claimed the lead and were close to lose the game at the last minute with the free-kick of Jurado that hit the crossbar. A deserved point for the sacrifice of the players as the team pushed in the second part, and deserved for RCD Espanyol with the suffering due to the unusual errors of Sidnei.

Juanfran is now suspended for the home game against Villarreal CF (Riazor, Saturday, 20h45 CET). Before, Depor travel to Mendizorroza in order to play the second-leg in Copa against Deportivo Alavés (Wednesday, 19h00 CET).
