PREVIEW: ALAVÉS – DEPORTIVO (COPA)

11 Jan 2017
Once again Depor face a game having big problems to build up the roster. Borja Valle and Marlos Moreno are having a new chance. The situation is the opposite at Alavés as Pellegrino is ready to make rotations.

Referee: Xavier Estrada Fernández
Kick-off: 19h00 CET (Mendizorroza)

STATISTICS: NOT GOOD PRECEDENTS
This is the third opportunity in which Deportivo are facing a two-leg tie in Copa Del Rey after the first game played at the Riazor ended in a 2-2 draw, and in both previous opportunities the team was eliminated from the tournament.

The first opportunity was in the third round of the season 1978/79. After a 2-2 draw with Athletic Club the Galicians travelled to San Mamés and there was a new draw there (0-0). The away goal rule wasn’t on at the time, so it was necessary the penalty shootout and the Basques clinched the qualification to the next round.

For the season 1996/97, it happened the same situation with RCD Espanyol (fourth round). After a 2-2 draw at the Riazor against the Catalans, the Galicians travelled to Catalonia and the second game ended in a 0-0 draw. This time the away goal rule was on and therefore Depor were eliminated.

If Deportivo are able to pass the round, then it will be the first time since 2011 in which the Galicians reach the quarterfinals in Copa Del Rey. At the time Oltra’s UD Almeria eliminated the Galicians with a 4-2 aggregate score.

DEPORTIVO: SHRINKING THE SQUAD
It seems that each day the squad is shrinking at Deportivo, right winger Bruno Gama sustained an injury on Monday and is out of this game and probably of the next meeting in liga. Then centre-back Raúl Albentosa is dragging a knock and an injury in the tendon of his right hand that needs surgery, he is delaying the process until the end of the campaign, because he will be ne immobilized for ten weeks.

Meanwhile, the signings aren’t arriving. The club told to reporters on Sunday that there should be news on Monday, but by Tuesday nothing was known. At least right-back Laure received the medical okay and striker Florin Andone is fit to play, so for this game the coach was able to build up a roster with eighteen players.

The lineup should be similar to the one of the first-leg, the main novelty is that Borja Valle will be a starter. The Ponferrada-born player was at the door out only two weeks ago, but he has stayed and will be a starter on the right wing due to the casualties of Bruno Gama and Carles Gil.

Team news: Bruno Gama suffered a Soleus injury during Monday’s training and is out of the game. The Portuguese and Carles Gil are the players at the injury room.  Fabril’s winger Óscar García was picked too despite picking a fifth yellow card on the season playing for Fabril. The competition committee lifted the ban after the appeal of Depor.

Laure and Andone are part of the roster after surpassing their physical problems, but will stay on the bench. Fayçal Fajr is concentrated with the national team of Morocco and, despite the countless problems, Garitano left a player out for tactical reasons: midfielder Álex Bergantiños. Finally, goalkeeper Przemysław Tytoń is rested for la liga.

Man to watch: Attacker Marlos Moreno. The Colombian has been a disappointment in his first season in Europe, to the point that he was even whistled at the Riazor after been replaced in the first-leg, now the casualties are forcing to see him as a starter again and, with Depor needing goals, he needs to be more effective at the moment of choosing either to pass the ball or try to define with individual plays.

Picked players: (18) Lux, Rubén Martínez (goalkeepers); Laure, Juanfran, Arribas, Albentosa, Sidnei, Navarro, Luisinho (defenders); Borges, Pedro Mosquera, Çolak, Guilherme (midfielders); Joselu, Marlos Moreno, Andone, Óscar García & Borja Valle (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Rubén Martínez –Juanfran, Sidnei, Arribas, Luisinho –Mosquera, Guilherme – Borja Valle, Çolak, Marlos Moreno – Joselu.

ALAVÉS: A SOLID WALL
Deportivo Alavés continued with its solid season after the recent 0-0 draw at San Mamés visiting Athletic Club, the Basques have now chained eight straight official games without losing and in that period they clinched six clean sheets, reason why they are now the fourth best defence in la liga allowing 17 goals, only behind Villarreal (12), Real Madrid (14) and Atlético Madrid (14).

This is the key of a team that has been showing little things in attack, and Depor need to score and win if they want to pass the round. The good thing for the Galicians is that they found the way to score twice in the first-leg. The previous time Alavés allowed two or more goals was in October hosting Atlético Madrid for la liga (1-4).

Coach Mauricio Pellegrinohas plenty of confidence in the depth of his squad and announced rotations. As always, the less habitual players in liga are having the option to demonstrate things in this competition.

Team news: Pellegrino picked all the available players and will release the 18-men list for the game until hours before the kick-off. The only man with physical problem is goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco with a knock, though he could be on the bench as the coach announced on Monday.

Man to watch: Midfielder Nenad Krstičić. With only 295 minutes played in liga, this Serbian centre midfielder played his best game at Alavés during the first-leg against Depor, now Pellegrino is open to advance his position on the pitch in order to perform as a playmaker. Like the case with Venezuelan attacker Christian Santos, he needs to demonstrate things in Copa in order to gain more chances in liga.

Picked players: The final list will be released until Wednesday.

Predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1) Ortolá – Femenía, Ruano, Laguardia, Theo - Dani Torres, Llorente - Edgar, Krstičić, Katai - Christian Santos
