REVIEW: ALAVÉS 1 – DEPORTIVO 1 (COPA)

12 Jan 2017
Deportivo eliminated from Copa Del Rey after the Galicians were only able to get a 1-1draw and despite playing with one more player the entire second half.

BEFORE THE GAME
One novelty at the expected lineup as Celso Borges was a starter in the place of Guilherme. The draw was still a 4-2-3-1. Rubén Martínez was the goalkeeper, Juanfran Moreno covered the right side in defence, while Luisinho performed on the left

The centre-backs were Alejandro Arribas and Sidnei Rechel. Pedro Mosquera joined Borges at midfield, Borja Valle attacked from the right wing, Marlos Moreno did it from the left and Joselu was the centre forward.

At Deportivo Alavés, Mauricio Pellegrino presented novelties in defence as Aleksandar Pantić and Carlos Vigaray were starters, while the attacking line was the expected one. Katai, Krstičić and Christian Santos were the main references up front.

FIRST HALF
Equal first part only unbalanced by a lack of concentration that cost a goal; Depor had a couple of chances, but Marlos Moreno was unable to score, while Edgar seized a distraction to capitalize the best opportunity for Alavés.

The game started with both teams trying to put pressure upfront, but there were no scoring chances within the first five minutes. The first chance in the game was a lack of concentration at the defence that allowed Christian Santos to penetrate by the left side of the area, but Rubén Martínez made the save (7’).

One minute later Theo Hernández fired in a direct free-kick action and he sent the ball over the crossbar. The first chance for Depor came at minute 12 and it was a big one, Çolak made the play on the right and Marlos Moreno found the ball inside the area, his crossed shot hit the far post when Ortolá was already defeated.

After a serious of errors by both sides, Katai had the next chance in the game with a shot that was blocked by Rubén. Luisinho was missing key passes and some errors by the midfielders allowed the locals to release a couple of counterattacks, like the run of Theo that ended in a wide shot (29’)

Depor only had a new chance to score until minute 41, it was a foul over Marlos Moreno at the edge of the area that ended in a free-kick for Çolak, but the shot of the Turkish playmaker just passed close to the post. Two minutes later Joselu didn’t arrive in time in order to head a cross from Luisinho.

And when it seemed that the first half was going to end goalless, the locals found the goal in a new lack of concentration of the defence. Arribas didn’t clear the ball properly, Christian Santos hit the post and Edgar found the loose ball to score from inside the area with Sidnei and Luisinho unable to react in time. Now Depor were needing two goals in the second part to pass the round.

SECOND HALF
Despite the aggregate score was against them, Depor’s players had things in favour in this half due to the numeric advantage, but the team never found the way to surpass the local wall and the countless opportunities in which they were wasting time.

The second half started with the expulsion of Alaves’ left-back Theo Hernández after a tough foul over Juanfran. He was booked at the end of the first part and this was his second card in a matter of six minutes.

The first shot on target in the second part was an attempt by Luisinho that was blocked by Ortolá (52’), then Garitano made the first substitution and Guilherme replaced Borges. Alavés had the chance to score the second with a shot by Marcos Llorente that missed the target (58’). That was their best chance in this half.

Depor weren’t creating chances despite the numeric advantage, but suddenly the Galicians found a goal in a set-piece. It was a cross of Çolak in a corner-kick that Arribas found at the area to net the equalizer with a precise header. It was a similar action to the goal that the defender netted against Betis in the previous round.

Before Florin Andone had replaced a disappointing Marlos Moreno as Garitano switched the draw into a 4-4-2. The true is that Depor never seized the numeric advantage and neither the presence of Andone, the team was too hurried and the only way to find a road to Alavés’ area were the long runs of Luisinho and Juanfran that were ending in nothing.

Besides, the locals were wasting time in every possible opportunity. The public even throw a ball into the pitch when Depor were releasing a corner-kick, situation that provoked a warning by referee Xavier Estrada Fernández. Thus Deportivo were only able to create danger until the final ten minutes, frame in which a desperate Garitano had already sent Óscar García replacing Mosquera.

The two chances for Depor at the end came through Joselu, in the first he headed out a cross by Luisinho and two minutes later the sequence was repeated, this time local goalie Ortolá made a brilliant save before the attempt from the striker.

AFTER THE GAME
Depor were unable to revert the situation despite playing with one more player during the entire second half. The Galicians had chances in the end, but Joselu wasn’t able to score before a rival that claimed the lead in both legs, but that never defeated Deportivo. The Galicians are out of Copa Del Rey due to the away goal rule (aggregate 3-3).

Now Deportivo will only focus in la liga competition. The next game is on Saturday as the Galicians host Villarreal CF (Riazor, 20h45 CET). The Valencians were eliminated from Copa at the same time by Real Sociedad.
