The first winter signing at Deportivo is Ola Johan, a Dutch winger with a promising career that has suffered a decline in recent seasons. He comes loaned from SL Benfica and will undergo the scans today.

24-year-old Ola John is the first winter reinforcement for Deportivo. The left winger arrives loaned from SL Benfica after been loaned at the beginning of the campaign at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The deal is a loan spell until the end of the season and according to reports, there’s a buyout clause in the contract. The Dutch players arrived on Thursday’s to A Coruña and will undergo scans today.

Ola John was considered as a big promise in the Netherlands. After debuting at FC Twente in 2010, he made a big jump during the season 2011/12 taking advantage of Nacer Chadli’s injury. He made 33 appearances in the Eredivisie and scored 8 goals. He was even the best assistor in the UEFA Europa League group stage with six assists.

Immediately the winger was picked by national coach Bert van Marwijk for the game against England at Wembley (May 2012) and was named in the provisional roster of 36 players for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament.

At the same time, SL Benfica showed up and the Eagles ended paying €9.1 million for his transfer. And it was then that his career suffered a decline, because he never settled in Portugal and later was unable to demonstrate things in the three loans spells in which he was involved.

John’s debuting campaign (2012/13) with SL Benfica wasn’t impressive, he made 22 league appearances without scoring goals, though he scored twice in the Europa League, one season later he was loaned to Hamburger SV, and there he only made 8 appearances at the Bundesliga.

There was a little improvement for the campaign 2014/15, because the Dutch winger stayed at SL Benfica and managed to score 3 goals in 26 league appearances and also scored the winning goal against Marítimo in the league cup final (2-1 win)

But then he failed again after been loaned twice to the English Championship, first at Reading, club that impress during the season 2015/16 ending 12 points above demotion and currently at Wolverhampton Wanderers, club where he has only played 72 minutes distributed in 3 games. Curiously the reason is that ex-Depor Hélder Costa is the undisputed starter on the left wing.
